  1. I've had enough of this discussion so I'm closing the thread. If you want to complaincomment about this decision please do so here.
  2. From a current thread elsewhere in the UK forum: This set me thinking in more general terms about how we moderate this forum. Forum moderators are "employed" by Groundspeak to use their experience and best judgement to try and strike a balance between a free-for-all in the forums and strict censorship. Different forums have different moderators and different local customs and sensitivities. All these volunteer moderators come from different backgrounds. Then consider that each forum has around 2-3 moderators on average and compare that with the number of people posting on each forum. Is it any wonder that some (many?) people disagree with how a moderator allows some threads and closes others? In that particular thread a simple request from a well established geocacher has elicited an inordinate amount of correspondence, both here and off forum. The request may or may not have been strictly geocaching related but does it harm anyone or bring the forums or Geocaching itself into disrepute? In my opinion, no. Should the moderators police the forums more closely and weed out anything anyone dislikes? I personally don't think so, indeed such an approach would mean the end of such long running and obviously popular threads as the "Pub Quiz" etc. I may be wrong so if you have a problem with the current approach please explain here. I can't promise to agree with everything said but I will certainly consider it.
  3. I trust this is vaguely Geocaching related.
  4. I'm glad the calendars are selling well, the Mega Event committee need all the help they can get to ensure there are sufficient funds in the kitty to make the event a success. Keep up the good work
  5. Still not working - 8.00am Friday 1st. DITTO, mine have been "pink" since yesterday as well If it's any consolation the reviewers' version has also been broken for a few days
  6. You are right that the normal "event horizon" is three months but reviewers have discretion to extend that up to six months where the circumstances warrant it. If your event requires pre-booking facilities and/or attendees need extra notice then the reviewers are normally amenable to granting an extension. If you are submitting an event where you feel more than three months notice is required just make your case in a "note to reviewer" and we'll take it from there.
  7. I've merged a couple of related threads so no one needs to get in a stew at having to read both.
  8. As it's their land it's only reasonable to let them know. I would also urge you to contact one of the reviewers with details too.
  9. Yep! Post your ad here: UK Geocaching Car Boot Sale and hopefully you'll get a good response. I'll close this thread to prevent duplication.
  10. To avoid duplication I'll close this thread and allow any further discussion to carry on in the original one linked to.
  11. ... and as was suggested during correspondence about this cache, if the cache owner could provide evidence of permission from the landowner of the bridge i.e. the Highways Agency, then as long as they were happy with the placement the cache could stand. We have no problem with cachers putting themselves at risk but in a location such as this where there is a distinct possibility of distraction taking place we are not going to wait for an accident to happen before taking action. To do so would be highly irresponsible. We are the last people you should accuse of introducing "nanny state" thinking into geocaching.
  12. I think you'll find that some of the suggestions and offers being made here are at the best suspect and may possibly even be illegal. As such I have to close the thread.
  13. Glad you found what you were looking for.
  14. Here's a good place to start. Check out the "Which GPS" link.
  15. Although caches themselves cannot have an "agenda" under the guidelines and caches promoting charities cannot be published, this does not necessarily apply to swap items placed in caches. As long as the swaps meet the usual guidelines and are "family friendly", which these clearly are, then there should be no problem. As has been said, the charity is aiming to help people and is not supporting political ends so go ahead and place them. If people object to them when finding a cache then they are free to leave them where they are.
  16. ...or indeed move to a beautiful but "cache poor" part of the country. I've only got 4 unfound caches (and 4 found) within 15 miles of me and 29 within 20 miles.
  17. As far as I'm concerned a "Power Trail" is a series of similar caches, often but not always, micros hidden fairly close to each other and designed to be completed in a single visit. A common feature is a simple "cut'n'paste" description. There's usually around 6 or more although there's no set figure. It's not a UK phenomenon although the UK review team have always been very much more lenient than many reviewers in other parts of the world when considering series of caches which is perhaps why you see them here. From a personal perspective I have strong reservations about power trails but I try not to let that influence me when reviewing caches. Only in the most extreme examples (e.g. 30 or more ) do I question things. And Nebias, don't worry about lamp post caches in the UK, ours are constructed differently and don't have the removable "skirts" that the American ones do. Phew!
  18. Just to reiterate that caches in that area have now been temporarily disabled to discourage people visiting them.
  19. OK! But I'll take the opportunity of having the final word to say that if this person is a Geocacher and is thinking of laying a 60 stage power trail - THINK AGAIN!!!!
  20. From the Guidelines: When you place a cache you agree to this statement: Unless there are particular restrictions the reviewers know about (generally listed on GAGB) we assume you are telling the truth when submitting a cache for review and have satisfied yourself that you have adequate permission. If something susequently comes to light which suggests that adequate permission has not been obtained we will look at the cache again. If a cacher publicly states that they do NOT have permission then we will have to consider the legitimacy of those caches. As for what constitutes Adequate permission, it is very difficult if not impossible to write down what this constitutes. We will always try and use common sense when determining this.
  21. As it appears that there's a permission issue with the cache in question I have archived it until this is sorted out.
  22. There again, having a cache in such a remote location can have its benefits.
  23. I agree with Moote, common sense is all that's needed in circumstances such as these.
  24. Towcester (Lactodorum) is where I grew up. As you can see from the map I now live in deepest Herefordshire.
