The system should not allow you to adopt an archived cache and if it does slip up and process it you will not be able to get it unarchived so go ahead and make a new cache. I see that you have a new cache page submitted already for this location. This is the proper thing to do.

The license agreement you agree to when you start using PQ's is very clear. There is no reason for an additional comment from Groundspeak (GOD how I hate the phrase "TPTB". Its so rude the way its used and confusing as sometimes it means reviewers and sometimes moderators and sometimes Groundspeak) Give it a rest. Demanding will not get you any additional answers when the information is already public. EVERYTHING you need to know about the allowed use of the data is in that agreement. You have your response. You are not getting a pony!!!!! so stop asking.

Great idea. It would probably look like this. O wait, it does already its the current 18 month old guideline. Groundspeak makes an exception for the Venue name so people can find it. It surprises me to see people demanding that the reviewers not allow the name on their page to be consistent. All caches are looked at on a case by case basis. This is the reason for no precedent. This allows more caches to be listed. If Groundspeak went to the hard and fast rule some people demand a lot less caches would get listed. The fact that they are guidelines is a good thing.

At one time I was receiving real death threats from a cacher and they knew who I was and where I lived. I was concerned for my wife if this person showed up at the house and I was not there. Don't ask for any more details I will not say anymore on that subject. It would be great of everyone was sane but it does not work that way. Any reviewer that wants to, can be hidden. Groundspeak does not encourage it or discourage it. It is up to the reviewer. There are times when it would be nice to not spend an entire event answering questions about the reviewing process. I solved it with an agreement with the cachers in the area that if I was wearing the reviewer name tag at an event I was there as the reviewer and would discuss reviewer issues and if I was wearing them cacher name tag I would not. It worked pretty well for most people but there was always the few people that just HAD to bug me. It is a volunteer job and there are times we, as reviewers just want to be a cacher.

Hi terahex- Let's see what we can do. Try this approach first. Email ArtInColorado and see if he can take on your request. It looks to me that he has a cache along or close to that same road as yours. Also, place a request on our local forums, GCCO and see if there is anybody there to lend a hand. Thanks Zoltig! I emailed ArtInColorado, and waiting to hear back. Looks like GCCO is a great site. Wish I had found that before my trip to Colorado. I will add a request there too. What would be the best Forum. I didn't see one for Central Colorado. I wish you would have taken the time to read the guidelines on this issue and then it would not have been a problem in the first place. When you placed your caches you stated that you had read them so it should not have been a surprise that they were not allowed. The good folks of Colorado will help you. I have no doubt however it is always best to follow the guidelines and not have to deal with damage control after the fact.

The 15 foot pole is the key. You go from a location of poor signal to a better location. At 1.5 Ghz that might only require a 6 inch change in location. That is why such tests are subjective. The simple movement of the leaves in the wind could easily affect as much "gain" as the external antenna. I guess you could just as easily attach the GPSr to the 15 foot pole and hold it up and take a reading. if it works for you that's great. Others in other cases might find it not worthwhile. it is interesting that i have been caching for four years and tried such active antennas (directly connected) with my Garmin (old as the hills) Street pilot back when I first started. The active antenna certainly helped the ancient Garmin, no question (but the old garmin has an external antenna jack, thus eliminating the questionable coupling of the "transmit" antenna gimmick). Since I bought my first Magellan and subsequently, my second Magellan, I have never had any trouble with tree cover- even in places where the cache owner posted such things as "was not able to get good readings due to heavy tree cover." I don't think that it is due to Magellan being "better" than Garmin as much as it is that it is a newer unit. I have found that if signal is questionable, all i have to do is stand still and hold the unit upright for a few seconds and the sat signals pop right up. An illustration from related radio stuff: I'd like a nickel for every police, fire and commercial 800MHz base (control) station I have had to "service" because they used a magnet mount antenna inside the dispatch center or firehouse. They will complain about loss of signal or static. Moving the antenna a few inches "fixes" the problem (until next week/month). The real problem is that they were too cheap to pay to have a proper and legal antenna installed OUTSIDE. The OP requested "do they work". The answer is "maybe" - especially with "homebrew". I don't want to give false hopes. It would be much better, if the point is to use an external antenna, to buy a unit that has an antenna jack. With the direct connection at least you get full benefit of the active antenna without losing MOST of the gain in the connection gimmick. Again you assume that the construction is of such that it really causes problem. An active antenna is not for everyone. If you want of need one they work. If you don't then its easy to spout tech-speak and make them sound like they are worthless. There are days when an additional 2 db would mean the difference between a lock and a DNF.

Just like the bee, inspite of the assumed numbers you used it works. I have mine on the end of a pole that extends 15 feet and I get a greatly improved signal in places where tree cover is causing problems. So it works in spite of the assumptions you made about construction. Which is really all that counts.

BRDAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LTNS. For those to young to know, Brdad and I worked on these antenna's at the same time. We shared info and both worked well. The link on the bottom of my page goes to his. He has some really great charts and tests. My design was functional, his was really clever.

Yes the active ones work and are easy and cheap to build.

One of the hazards of responding in the forums is sometimes I am wrong. The memory isn't as good as it once was. My reference to the Terms of Use were incorrect. Groundspeak allows these types of counters as long as the use of the data is not malicious. So please disregard my comments above as they are incorrect. I apologize for any confusion I may have caused.

Hmmmmmmm I wonder how long you will be allowed to continue this practice considering that the Terms of Use prohibit the collecting of information. So I guess the question is, now that you told us you do this, how long till you turn it off?

We all hope it comes back. But remember it is not a Groundspeak site. Groundspeak has no control over it or the authorization to repair that site.

Those of you debating Archived caches and coords or no coords start a new thread please. Its off topic to this one.

It makes no sense to retract the listing in this case. It makes it looks like the reviewer made a mistake in not getting further clarification of a cemetery cache and is now retracting the cache so that no one can see this mistake. If a reviewer published a cache because it appeared to be valid based on the information the reviewer had at the time, and later the reviewer finds out new information, the cache should be archived so that everyone can see the reasons. Even if the review made a mistake, the cache should be archived and not retracted in most cases. Retracted caches look like cover-ups. It also keeps people from trying to find it anyway. That happens a LOT. Retraction was the best thing in this case. Even if you do not think so.

For YOU they are not working. Mine have been running just fine the entire time. Let's not be quick to blame the system for all the problems.

Its not like they are ignoring the situation. They are working to fix it. Your $30.00 is roughly $0.082 a day. since PQs are only a part of the premium membership package how much of that 82 cents per day should you get rebated when it doesn't run. since you can run 5 a day you have to figure that each Pq is only 20% of what ever percentage the PQs are of membership. Let me know how much you think you are owed. And just for the record read the Terms of Use and the PQ agreement to see if you are entitled to a rebate when it doesn't work. I am sorry if it doesn't work the way you think it should all the time. Life isn't fair. Look at all the windows users. They understand software crashing. Perhaps you need to take a breath and understand that in the grand scheme of things its not that big of a deal.
