  1. Hmmm, when I saw the chipset fw update, I suspect one possibility is the decreasing of receiver sensitivity. Customers complaint various problems regarding the previous chipset FWs. Garmin has been belive it is caused by high-sensitivity introduced multi-path symptom. Lowing the sensitivity can easy bypass the problem Garmin has been scratching head for for the past year.
  2. I'm frugal. All I hope NOT is what new problems (or chipset maker may call it features) are introduced.
  3. Is this website has bug or insecure? As you can see from the forum list view,http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=11, I'm the starter of this thread informing people about the new firmware and chipset update. However, the first post content and author becomes MtnHermit's I'm not here to collect credit, just concerned as IT professional.
  4. duplicate post (due to webserver timeout and refresh), should remove
  5. Echo that, especially for old model. The Garmin "cross-over" model Quest2, that uses NT, is so much slower than the Quest 1 (that use non-NT), that many people complains and try to return this otherwise good product at the time. People compains 15-20 seconds delay on redraw. that until the next turn the map is not yet completely shown. Garmin know that well.
  6. It is really hard to call, depending on the area "content density", how fast your moving. If you use it for walking (if you hike, most people use topo map), does, not matter. If you use it for driving, the lagging is a bit irritating in dense street area. It is your call. NON-NT POI searching is also a bit faster. But that is not so important. Future non-NT upgrade is a bit more expensive (because it is only available via garmin), for $75, versus $45-69 for NT upgrade available via different retailers
  7. FYI (I posted this info on Jul 16 on this board), 2009 CNNA (non-nt) has 344 segment (around 1.75G), so still works well on your device if you load all maps to the device
  8. Since size and # of maptile is a non issue, you should consider like this: 1. The NON-NT map redraw and POI search is quicker, quick to a degree that is matter to me. 2. The NT map update is cheaper, this is especially important if you update your map every or every other year. NT is cheap due to it is available from many shops and wholesale house, around $59 is not that hard to find. The NON-NT update (not the the full version which you mentioned which is available locally) is only available via Garmin, they charge you the list price, which is $75 (for the past 4 years)
  9. You do not need the card reader, you can download map to the connected 60csx directly. But if you frequently download maps, getting a reader is better as the reader (nowadays on the market) will enjoy USB 2.0 download speed, download to 60csx directly (usb 1.0?) is slower. Magnitude slower. You can get a 19-in-1 reader for 15.00, go to amazon and search "kingston reader".
  10. If you own any prior version of city navigator AND have unlocked it, then you should find the update order link in myMap section, in your account @ https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myGarminHome.faces Otherwise, you have to purchase a full version Either full or update version (for non-nt) have to be purchased directly from garmin @ the URL below. This is different from NT version, which you can purchase it from many resellers. http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynav.jsp# Many recent handhelp GPSrs can read either formats, If a handhelp GPSr claims support NT map, it most probably support non-NT map too even though Garmin may not claims so.
  11. Bug? it is a feature. That's what Garmin is thinking. It is fine to have both version co-exist. On rare occasion I need to print the map, the new version looks better. So I treat it as a bonus tool, not replacement one. On one of my machine, all the waypoint names is not displaced though (as some posts reported here ). That map database contains non english characters on some waypoints, perhaps any of one them can become a show stopper
  12. Thanks for the update. Hopefully it is not because of the release person who happen to use a HCX and 2.6 version firmware that drifted and ..., you know.
  13. Nuvi 500 is nothing more than just the equivalent of streetpilot series crossover model, the garmin quest. The garmin quest inherited a lot of streetpoilot feature, I guess the customizability and choose of routing options is still strong than NUVI 500. But antenna sensitivity, speak street name etc bling bling features lag behind https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=...pareProduct=213 Actually the above compare is not right, for example, Garmin quest has voice prompt (and the sound is very decent), but the table mark it as N/A.
  14. Read the first post, and the link in it
  15. Thanks a lot for the answer. I also have the shaded 24K national park (version 3.02, latest) from garmin, so I think I might skip this map, but I do think for anyone who has no city navigator or any of the topo map, this product is really appealing and cost effective.
  16. Not really not interest. As someone like me who already owns city navigator and 2008 topo map, I'm more interested in knowing if the 24k map has more trails, that is the only value added part. Waiting for more reviews. For the record, topo 2008 map contains barely any trail. the few trails it has are the wide open fire trails we hikers rarely take (or at least don't need GPS for such case). [edited to correct typos]
  17. As of today, Etrex Vista C's latest version is v2.70 Are you sure your friend's one is Vista HCX?
  18. I tend to agree, in most cases. What I'm anticipating is if the 24K contains more trails. The 10K topo map is very disappointing on this.
  19. For the record 2009 CNNA (non-nt) has 344 segment (around 1.75G) 2008 Topo as 6633 segment, 4G Plus
  20. I can imgaine your topo map and the city navigator map, which as the common road or intersection, may not always closely aligned. If not one overriding the other, you may have two street lines or 2 road crosses cluttered together, result a messy screen etc etc.
  21. Here is what I experienced, that made me not that happy. On Jul 2, I got the wrong 2008 disk, I already purchased unlocked almost one year ago, called them, provided the order #, get this reply "are you sure when you order the DVD, it says is 2009 version?" I was asked to forward them the order email. In fact, I already have the 2008 version unlocked as seen on mygarmin history, we all know from mygarmin experience, in that case, 2008 is not an upgrade option, 2009 is the only clickable upgrade, garmin should not question this in the first place, it is how their web service is designed. Then immediately I forward them my order email, on Jul 2. Garmin emailed me back on Jul 8, 6 days later, telling me the correct one was to be shipped on Jul 9, totally a week to resolve it (well, Jul 4 was a holiday). I have 3 Garmin gpsr, paid update every year since 2005, plus two different version topo 2008 and 24k national park topo maps, all regsistered, they should know what type of customer I am.
  22. Somewhat. Similar error happens to me, garmin is bit slow response to my report. The correct disk arrived after I departed on my trip, which mute the purpose why I wanted the update.
  23. Oops, What you see is what you get. Topo 2008 trails are very limited, all the trails in my area are fire trails (where fire truck in drive-in), even that type of trail is partial and incomplete. I use the topo mostly to get an idea about the terrain contour. I have to use my GPS capability to track my hiking paths and generate my own trails. Garmin is releasing 24k topo map, but for the time being only covers the west coast 3 states. Perhaps it has bit more trails, but never expect it to be as your parks brochure map.
