  1. We are flatlanders from Nebraska that recently went caching in Estes Park, CO. Never having needed to consider altitude as well as lat. and long. there were several searches that ended in DNF's. Were we frustrated, yes. But certainly not at the CO. Frustrated with ourselves for not thinking that a cache that was .2 miles away meant it was actually further away than that and UP the mountain. Live and learn and go back better educated next time.
  2. I'm helping with an Event Cache in my area (a geo-picnic) and have been asked to approach local businesses for donations of items to be given as "door prizes". I have no problem with asking for donations I just don't know what to ask for. What are some items you would like to receive as a prize at an event (within reason of course, I doubt anyone is going to donate and GPS units or the like). Serious suggestions for items will be greatly appreciated (not only by me but by those receiving the items as well )
  3. Calling all Great Plains Cachers!!! The 6th Annual Kearney Geo-Picnic is being held on 9/12/09 at the Ft. Kearney Recreation Area. This event cache is not just for Nebraska cahers. We'd LOVE to have cachers from neighboring states or anyone that just happens to be traveling through the area at that time. (last year lydon_ut joined us as he trucked his way through the area!) Here's a link to the event cache listing http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...79-4087fd4842ed Hope to see you there!
  4. For those of you that found a cache that had "issues" like broken container, missing log, etc, etc - when you logged your Find or DNF did you also log a "Needs Maintainence"? The CO of the situation in my original post hadn't logged onto geocaching.com for quite some time. He has NUMEROUS hides that are found often so I doubt he looks over every email he receives about his caches. Within hours of my logging a "Needs Archived", our reviewer had archived the cache listing. Had the first cacher that posted their "found where it should have been" logged a "Needs Archived" instead of their "find" it would have been archived a month earlier. I just feel that a situation that left geo-caching in a poor light (cache confiscated due to damage done to property) might have been less so if it had been archived sooner to keep subsequent cachers from searching for something that was no longer there in an area where cachers were not welcome.
  5. Around these parts there is a FTF hound that is also a cutthroat FTFer. If you add a prize, you might as well just send it to him in the mail. Rumor has it that he's done a few despicable things but that is just a rumor. My first FTF included a FTF prize that was a Montana GeoCoin. The cache name was "Montana Memories" and included all kinds of neat swag that all had to do with Montana. The CO had recently moved to the area from Montana so he placed the "Montana" cache. It was my most exciting find. Not only because it was my first FTF but because of the thought that had been put into it.
  6. ME TOO! I'm also the kind that demands that any reference to Twitter be removed from a finder's log on my caches. (Your Twitter link is off-topic, and not related to the search and finding of my cache.) I am a fair-weather cacher. I don't cache when it's too cold and I don't cache when it's too hot. I don't like to, but will on occasion, cahe where there is a posibility for ticks, snakes and poisonous plants. This may make me an urban-cacher but I do enjoy short walks to find a cache.
  7. Maybe my thread title should read "Logging a Find When It Should Have Been a Needs Archived". Do some seasoned cachers (and IMO anyone over 50 finds is a seasoned cacher) really not realize when the different situations should be used (Find, DNF, Note, Needs Maintainence, Needs Archived, etc)?
  8. I was recently reveiwing logs from caches in my area (but not owned by me) that had been found. I like to see who is in the area caching. One cache had a couple recent "finds" logged but upon reading the logs the cachers state that they didn't really find the cache just the place where it must have been. Here are the logs: "Well we kinda found it. We found where the cache had been hidden until the Maintenance Supervisor at the location took hold of it due to damage to the Area. We know we were in the right place, cause there was a sign stating that the cache was now in possession of the Maintenance Supervisor and the owner of the cache may stop by and pick it up. Our attached picture shows that we found the place." and "Like the cacher's before, we did not find the cache because the property manager has confiscated it, but we found where it was. We'll post pictures of us there. This cache is becoming a 'virtual'." Both of the above logs were posted by cachers with over 200 finds. Why would you even consider logging it as a FIND when you clearly state you didn't find it? If you don't find the container that IS the cache, IT'S NOT A FIND!!! Another log read as follows: "The place was closed, and the cache was not there. Would've loved to have found it, but there was a sign on the lamp post saying something about the geocache has been moved and that the "installer" can contact the facilities manager. I took a picture and have uploaded it along with some others." At least this cacher logged it as a DNF. NOT ONE of these cachers logged a "Needs Archived" or even a "Needs Maintainence" to notify the owner that the cache was no longer there. The DNF was logged a month ago. The pictures uploaded show the sign posted at the site which really leaves a big black eye on geocaching as a sport. In big, bold, writing it blames geocachers for damage done to the site. It has now been archived but it could have been brought to the attention of the cache owner much sooner if the first person (and the subsequent cachers) finding the sign posted would have logged the cache appropriately. I get the "it's all about the numbers" for some people but at least a log of "Needs Archived" along with a Find or DNF to let the reviewer know there is an issue that needs to be addressed.
  9. I helped with my first CITO this past weekend. I had the find of the day. A large purple rubber male appendage complete with attached purple nutsack. While finding the item was strange (it was in a bunch of bushes, must have been tossed out the car window or something) the strangest thing was when I called hubby after the CITO to let him know the group was meeting for lunch nearby and I wouldn't be home. I told him what I'd found and his response was "Did it work?". Ummmmm.....guess I didn't think to try it out. ROFLMAOPIP
  10. One thing to keep in mind when looking for camo tape at Walmart.......it's in the paint department with the other dozen or so colors of duct tape......not the hunting/sporting goods dept.
  11. My boss told me that the 2008 Cornhusker State Games has a new event this year: Oreinteering/Land Navigation. Not too sure what that means, but sounds cool! Anyone taking part?
  12. Are you really serious? Like law enforcement and bomb sqauds don't have anything better to do with their time than keep track of or search to see if what looks like it might be a bomb is really just a cache. Even as a geocacher, I'd rather my tax-dollars didn't go to such a ridiculous idea.
  13. My favorite is the yellow as yellow is the rose of friendship. Maybe some day I'll come across one of these beautiful finds!
  14. How do we really know who leaves the true "trash" like empty wrappers, twigs, an M&M covered with detergent dust and such? For all we know it was a muggle that stumbled across the cache and placed it there to be a smart-aleck (or didn't understand the purpose of leaving things). As for other items that aren't true trash, count me in with "one man's trash is another man's treasure". Am I disappointed when I find a cache that only has plastic dinosaurs, rubber spiders and Strawberry Shortcake stickers? Yes. In those cases I take nothing (I might leave something, I might not). I just move on to the next cache and hope that someday I will find an item that has been my heart's desire.
  15. A Baking/Food theme. I love to bake and cook (and eat). I'd have a series of coins that have a piece of cake, a slice of pie, a cream puff, etc. Great....now I'm hungry for dessert!
  16. The log of one I found last weekend had most recently been signed by a grade school class. It read something about a couple boys finding it and excitedly telling their class about it. The teacher decided to have the class do a fieldtrip to it and learn more about the sport. That has to bee a cool teacher!
  17. I would think you'd also want to stay away from chapstick also if it had any kind of scent or flavor. (and even if it didn't, in warm climates they have a tendency to melt all over everything and create quite a mess)
  18. BTW - there are hundreds of caches in and around Kearney - be careful not to place one too near another. I want to focus more on the Harlan Lake area since that is where I grew up, where my folks still live and where there are no chaches currently placed. Unless a multi in involved - the parks in Kearney aren't overrun with caches. Harmon covers an entire city block yet there is only 1 cache placed - and it's currently MIA.
  19. How do I find out who my local reviewer is?
  20. I've only been enjoying my new sport/hobby a few weeks now but I think I'm ready to place my first cache. According to the guidelines I need to get permission from the property owner or the appropriate public entity in order to place a cache. I'd like to place a few caches in my hometown where there aren't any caches (there's only one in the entire county). There is a nice, newer hike/bike trail along the lake (operated by the Corps of Engineers). Who do I need to speak with to get permission? The Mayor? The City Council? The Corps of Engineers? And for my current city of residence...... there are several nice, large city parks and a long hike/bike trail. There are already some caches placed (1 per park). Do I also need to get permission? Or since there are already caches placed around town by several different cachers, does that mean there is a blanket approval/permission? If I do need to get individual approval, how do I determine who to contact? Thanks in advance!
  21. I just recently discovered geocaching so my goals are simple: 1. get out of the house and get some exercise so that I lose about 10-15 pounds 2. speak some quality time with hubby 3. share my fun and excitement of my finds with friends and family in hopes they too will take up the sport and get some exercise
  22. A person has the option of leaving the swag coupon there if they don't want to get 10% off or BOGO somewhere. If I found a 10% off coupon for Pizza Hut I'd snag it right up because I know I'll use it since I eat there alot. If I found a 10% off coupon for Burger King I'd leave it there because I never eat there. It's swag, just becuase it's there doesn't mean you have to take it or use it. KWIM?
  23. Hunters and fisherman are there to take something from the property...game or fish. A cacher is there only to hunt/find/log and leave.
