I went to work for an Orthopedic Oncologist in 2001 who had gotten in on the sport in the early days. He hiked the Adirondacks and traveled the world to Ortho meetings and looked for caches then. He told me about this new game and showed me this website. I borrowed an old Garmin 12 gps from my son-in-law (it still works) and looked for the closest cache to my home. I since have a mapping Vista HCx and try to get out when we are camping. It has been an enjoyable time.

There are alot of caches to the south where we stay anyway(Surfside-Garden City-Murrels Inlet). Have done the Huntington Beach State Park ones and started the multi at Brookgreen Gardens. Hope to finish it this trip.

Thanks to all in South Carolina for their good work in heading off the legislation. Just before this controversy erupted, I did some caching in the MB area and enjoyed it alot. There are many caches that are family friendly and of interest to history, curiosity etc. I look forward to our return later this month.

Thanks Everyone. I will let this go awhile before closing.

Forgive me but I have been MIA from here a LONG time. We are leaving here from Syracuse to Myrtle Beach, SC and I would like to know how things went with the legislation in that state regarding restricting caching. Could someone Markwell me the latest info? I would like to do some more caching there but do not want to run afoul of the law (joke). Thanks

What To Do When The Gps Just Isn't Good Enough
greende replied to TheMagnificent7AndSamson's topic in How do I...?
Post back & let us know how it went. Happy caching! Dave -
Don't Have One...Don't know how. I guess I'll have to visit Amish Hacker's thread & ask for some help. I am at best a computer friendly user as opposed to a user friendly computer.

156570 Here. Just missed the cut off for the bowing and respect thing.

You can get large growths of poison ivy. I've seen it grow several hundred feet along the edge of a farm field. I also do not react to the stuff. I guess as long as it is put on the cache page I wouldn't have a problem with it being placed in the area. If people are just downloading the coordinates without viewing the cache pages they will be in for a surprise though!

I currently do not use one here in Syracuse but am thinking about getting one. I worked in Southeast Alaska for the FWS and I can vouch for what Jeremy says. You only have to slip once and grab a handfull of a plant called "Devil's Club" and realize that a walking stick is a real good thing to have.

Yeah, but I cannot repeat it here!

Snide Remarkes About Your Cache

GONE TO THE DOGS may want to e-mail Keystone Approver. It looks as tho the owner of this cache has gone missing. I'm not sure if he would want someone to CITO this or leave it for now.

South Carolina Legislation Meeting
greende replied to TinSparrow's topic in General geocaching topics
No offense, but I would wait to pass judgement on SC as a whole until Something actually happens with this sad piece of legislation. This Ceips person isn't exactly an influential (or experienced) politician, so be merry and geocache where you please in South Carolina within the confines of existing (and common sense) laws. I, for one, would rather go with business as usual instead of allowing this Ceips person a sense that she has any real actual power on your decision making process. As I stated earlier, I will go back to the Myrtle Beach area again this year. There are many good caches in that area and most of them have been found in the past 5 days. We'll see how this shakes out. I haven't gotten replies from my e-mails to the tourism and legislature. Maybe since I'm not a constituent, they just note my opinion and go on. It would be nice to know if they even got it. Good luck this afternoon. -
What Is The Average Weight Of A Geocacher?
greende replied to sept1c_tank's topic in General geocaching topics
5ft 9in 177lbs. Geocaching hasn't changed it much but walking on the treadmill and not eating cr*p certainly has. -

South Carolina Legislation Meeting
greende replied to TinSparrow's topic in General geocaching topics
I just wrote to Rep. Nelson Hardwick who lives in Surfside Beach (just south of Myrtle Beach) SC and represents the district that I vacation in every year. I politely told him that I spend money every year in the area vacationing AND geocaching. I plan to write to the Reps. from Georgetown County and Myrtle Beach itself later today. I also refered them to the SC Geocachers Assn. Hope this helps. If there is anything else I can do, yell. Good Luck, David Green -
I used to not log DNF's. I don't know if it was because I hate to admit defeat or not. However after reading this topic on several occasions here in the forums since I have become a cacher, I always log my DNF's. I usually include some type of explanation as to why (mostly stupidity on my part) and promise to return if I can. That's just how I play the game right now. I personally don't have strong feelings against logging a note but I now agree that a DNF is more accurate. Human nature is such that I think it is less of a blow to our psyche to just post a note saying that it was not found for whatever reason. Edit: For typing

South Carolina Legislation Meeting
greende replied to TinSparrow's topic in General geocaching topics
Thanks for keeping us informed. I E-mailed the tourism bureau last week with my concerns for this bill. I spend several thousand dollars per year in the Myrtle Beach area and wanted them to know that I combine caching with vacations. I also told them that if this passes, I will look elsewhere to spend my hard earned vacation dollars. Thanks to all the SC cachers for taking time out from their lives to champion this cause. Good Luck David Green -
And all the old ones!!

South Carolina Legislation Meeting
greende replied to TinSparrow's topic in General geocaching topics
I have read every post in this thread. I live in Syracuse but go to Myrtle Beach, SC every year and have done so for many years. Last year I cached while on vacation and even did a cemetary cache. The discussion here seems that residents (ie Voters) seem to have the greatest impact on the final vote of the legislature. Would it help if I, as a tourist that drops several thousand dollars in SC every year, write to the legislator(s) of the district that I vacation in to let them know this may impact some of their constituents' pocketbooks? Granted, my dollars are trivial to a billion dollar industry but would it help or hurt the cause? I will do what TS and others want. Good luck -
I can't add to what Lep just said. I think it sums it up. Welcome and have fun.
