  1. I'd encourage you to log DNFs. While it may be uncomfortable to do so, it let's the cache owner know that someone didn't find it. The cache may be missing and if no one reports the DNF, it may be weeks before it gets replaced/archived. The next cachers spend their time looking for something that may not exist.
  2. Bring some wire clippers along. When someone spots you with the ammo can... look stressed, wipe your brow and keep muttering "red or blue wire?...red... or..."
  3. I spent the night at the A'Le'Inn when I lived in Vegas a few years ago. Got as close to the dreaded "Do not cross or we will shoot you" signs as we could when we drove down to the facility access. I remember back then how folks tried to spot the sensors on the side of Groom Lake road. I never saw one myself or got harrassed by the gov. There had been a big rainstorm the day before I was there and so the road was washed out close to the No Trespassing sign and I figured they knew my car wouldn't be crossing anyhow... It was a fun trip. Reading this article, I think I'd be more paranoid going back knowing that they detect folks in a wider range that directly off GL road. It is definately an X-file-ish feel there
  4. Just saw this post by Bons... Taunt PixieTracker?? Go ahead... We try not create ones that are so tough that there are a lot of DNFs but we do want some in the field that make you use your noggin'. We love it when people log their "ah ha!!" moments and mention that the lightbulb came on. It is good for cache diversity since we like the easy ones but also want challenging ones too.
  5. Just carry some Alkaseltzers in your pocket. Muggles around? Pop a few in your mouth and let the foaming begin. Be sure to rant, claw at the ground and babble. Yes.... they may come to lock you away.... but it should buy you enough time to find the cache and sign the logbook!
  6. I think that moving caches are great and there is a lot of potential for very clever ideas/modifications on the theme. It's a loss for the sport that GC doesn't approve them. Someone should build a Moving Cache database website and those are the only caches listed. It wouldn't compete with GC and provide an added value to the geocaching community
  7. D, I think what would be cool is if you created a walking stick that in some way could hold a logbook. Then give it away with the intent that geocachers have to pass it on the next cacher they run into in the field. Each cacher would enter their name, date of when they got it and their city/state. That way the stick can be shared by folks. It could be the ultimate "travel" bug
  8. We are working on one like ju66l3r mentioned... We want to use the plastic easter eggs you can buy that hold candy, etc. The idea is that each egg will contain a coordinate to the next leg of the hunt. When the final leg is reached, we were thinking about planting about 10 bogus eggs in the final location where 9 of them say "Nope, not this one!" or something like that. Then when Easter is over, we would just rename this to "Wild Goose Chase" cache and leave it there...
  9. Cherokee, Here is the link to the show ad: http://travel.discovery.com/schedule/episo...725&channel=TRV You'll need to check programming to see when they will air it again.
  10. You'd want to check out your local hotspots BEFORE going out. Then you can visit those areas when out in the field. Most are places like coffee houses anyhow so that should make for a nice break
  11. I have occassionally seen some fellow GC's make comment that they take their laptops into the field besides their GPSr. Here is a handy URL you can use to find free wireless hotspots in your area in case your laptop is hooked up with a wireless card. That way you don't have to go home if you need to get online to log those finds... http://pcworld.jiwire.com/index.htm
  12. Oh, BTW... forgot to mention... check out Target as they now carry the various Garmin models.
  13. Zues, That is exactly how my wife and I got into Geocaching too! We watched the same show months and months ago, immediately got online, found our first cache while still awaiting our GPS in the mail and wondered how in the heck we'd never heard of this... Needless to say, we are hooked. You'll be too.
  14. Whoa... that's actually pretty cool. Doesn't change the fact that I think these things are creepy!
  15. When my wife and I first learned about geocaching, we thought we were going to get one of those hairy trolls - http://www.freetrolls.com/tr.gif (I thought they were pixies, but hey.. what do I know?...) as a tracking bug item. So when I created our account I had that in mind. Well, we never did use that troll thing. Our signature items are gem magnets so there really is *nothing* that has to do with pixies, but the name stuck anyhow. Odd, huh?
  16. ... have to throw my two cents worth in here... Micros are a legitimate cache and have their own place in the scheme of things. Should they only be confined to the urban setting? I don't think so. I think it is legitimate to have a micro in a densely wooded area. BUT, it is up to the cache owner to place it in a location that is unique in some way and then note it with a descriptive clue. Worst case scenario, throw a picture up on some website and use the URL as the clue so if a person sees it they can go "Aaaahhh... so THAT'S where it's at." The responsibility falls on the cache owner to make it an interesting cache. If you get frustrated with a micro, let the owner know. Sometimes people don't put that kind of useful info in the cache logs on a DNF (or a find) and so the owner has no idea that there may be a problem.
  17. I second Johhny's comment on the hot glue gun. It seems that this works in a lot of cases where the other glues fail...
  18. Thanks to those that replied via email. I sent you the link in reply. I appreciate the help. Thanks again !!!
  19. Crim, You could make different parasite stickers and use those with the coords (with the owner's approval, of course!). That'd be kinda cool.
  20. Sorry Carleen. Definately don't want to spoil this one for ya'
  21. ... and speaking o' puzzle caches... My wife and I are putting together a multi that is based on alchemy. It is a multi that starts off with four micros that represent the four elements. The last container will contain "ancient texts" that I photoshopped that contain the clues that eventually lead to the last container - an ammo can. The last item can only be found by deciphering the clues. This cache can be logged after hitting the four micros or the person can continue on for the last one and then log their find. To make this a bit more fun, there is a point system involved too. Everyone starts with 10 pts. In each of the first four caches is a riddle that the finder needs to solve. Each successful answer is 15 extra points. Of course this has to be on the honor system... but anyway... the last cache contains a phrase that the logger must email me to get credit for the final find and they get 30 points for that with a total of 100 points possible. I have photoshopped certificates that the cacher can access for the level they attain if they want. Ok, so I was wondering... would anyone (who doesn't live in Nebraska or plan to hit any NE caches) want to run through a test of trying to decode my "texts?" It's a three part system where one decoded item leads to another and so on down the trail to the final coord being presented. I was thinking like having 2 or 3 people test this out. As thanks, you get access to the top level certificate (100 pts) I gotta warn ya', these ain't easy and may drive you bonkers/mad. If not, then I need to ratchet them up!
  22. Team GPS, My, how time flies by... and I thought I only took a SHORT nap! ... and thanks for the thought Crim.
  23. All good ideas. Thanks for the feedback. Things constantly change too on the rules so if/when we decide to try this out, this may become illegal or something. Like I recently found out that moving caches are no longer approved or that locationless caches can't be added. *irk*
  24. Carleen, We'll have to checkout the paintball place too! I called Ace Hardware about two weeks ago because I remembered reading on some post that they occassionally carry them. The guy said they get them in the summer but they never know ahead of time if they will get any for the upcoming year and when they do, they go pretty fast since they are moderately priced. Stay warm in our deep freeze! (wishing I was in SanFran again this week)
