  1. I read questions in here about how to use palms and other devices along with a GPS unit. Personally all I do is get the coordinates and go from there. I dont load maps etc into my unit. I feel that it really does take all the fun out of the hunt when the equipment does it all for you. My way is to use the NSEW way of searching and watching the lat/long on the GPS. I really dont see how it can be all that fun when all you do is look at your electronic map to pin point where a geo cache is located. I compare it to people who work at a store restaraunt etc. who use a till. Not too long ago a person working a till had to figure out what change to give and count it out. Now it is all done for them. Push some buttons and you dont have to think at all. Same with geo caching . Enter the coords. in and bring it up on your map. No thinking at all the computer does it for you all you have to do is drive to the location. I wonder how many people out there know how to do it the hard way.
  2. The first gps I owned was a magellan 200xl which was a step up from the 2000. I bought mine in the year 2000. They were also discontinued that year. GPS are far more advanced now. At the time the 2000 came out it was one of the first consume handhelds available. It is probably a good one to start with just to get used to how they work. You say you won it so that is probably a good thing. You will not be able to find any info on them because they have been gone from the scene for 4 years now. I sold mine in 2001 for $100 and at a good time because GPS were coming out with bigger and better ones at that time. If I had that one now I would probably not get much more than $50 dollars for it. I did like the soft screen on it because it was virtually scratch proof.
  3. Does anyone know if it is alright to use a GPS on an airline. More specifically on a domestic Canadian flight with in the country. I would like to take it just to see the speed and how fat the lat/long changes while flying at over 400mph. I wouldnt want to take it only to find out that I have to leave it at the airport for me to pick up later? Anyone have experiences and or stories about GPS on a plane that they would like to share?
  4. All I am saying is that if you play with fire you get burned. Use your head and when playing in or near water with any electronic equipment use a water proof bag with it. If you can not afford one try a zip lock bag. Then you can not cry the blues when water gets on it or it falls in the Oh and by the way I am not rude where do you get that idea from. Just use common sense.
  5. What an idiot. You waste peoples time here trying to sell the thing then turn it around and sell it to your friend.
  6. What a joke. If you buy a new car and damage it what do you do. You get an estimate the get it fixed. End of story. Then you learn from your mistake and dont do it again. Pretend your GPS is a car and treat it the same way.
  7. Any person with a partial brain would protect there GPS while near water and put it in a water tight package. These are easily available from sporting goods stores. Would you tie your camera to the top of your kayak or boat and then cry the blues when it got wet then didnt work? FYI........electroincs usually dont fare to well when exposed to water. Invest a few dollars in a water tight container or cover for your electronics. Also if you read the fine print water tight does not mean water tight for extended periods. So please do not come on here saying that your 60cs is not water tight. Operator inexperience, and ignorance is the real issue here. Not a defective product. When you use a gas barbeque at home do you use acetylene for fuel then complain the the barbeque was defective ?
  8. There are benchmarks every where here and many different kinds. I think that geocaching.com should have a bench mark logging page for Canadian benchmarks. There is not a list available to look at which supplies coordinates but the best way to do it is for people who find them to post their find with a photo and the coords. There are benchmarks placed by the Federal and each Provincal and territorial governments. The list I look at for ones in BC is based on a map. The map of the Province comes up and it is covered in dots representing each benchmark. You then zoom in on the map and can get to see bench marks in any given area in the province. The map zooms in to individual streets and then shows the number of the bench mark. If you want to know if there are any in your area you need to do it this way. Bench marks are not replaced anymore when they are dug up with highway construction etc. GPS and other ways are used in place of benchmarks now.
  9. They can be found at most quality outdoor stores such as Robinsons, Ocean River Sports, Valhalla and many other camping hiking type stores.
  10. There are well over 50 000 benchmarks in BC if you need info on one of them let me know.
  11. You really want a list? I live in BC and I can tell you that there are over 50 000 in BC. I would Imagine that there are well over 1 million in the whole country . If you need to know of a particular one in BC let me know and I can email the coords. But as for a list youd need a lot of paper to print it out.
  12. I would like to trade a Canadian Geo Coin for a Texas Geo coin. Is there anyone who has a Texas coin that they wish to trade. The Canadian coin is the same as the Texas coin . Made by the same company etc. If you have one and would like to trade please send me an email. You can view a Canadian Geocoin at www.geocoins.ca
  13. GM100...........I will take that as a no on your part.Seeing that your only comment is about how long I have been registered. Feel free to read my user profile and maybe you will learn something about how long I have been actually doing it. If it is a major concern to you then I will cancell the thought or will find someone who has been registered longer and give them the details and they can do it. Oh and one other thing...Are you even on the Island or are you from Ontario and feel the need to make a comment on something you won't even be able to attend?
  14. The $20 dollars would be for an individual or for a team. ie: If a family of 4 entered and paid $20 then the would play as a unit of 1 and would be eligible for for the prize as a unit. ie:if John Doe wanted to play on his own then he would pay his $20 and be elible for the prize on his own. ie: If John Doe and Jane Doe wanted to play as a couple and be eligible for the prize (if they were the winners)then they would pay $20 and would have tp play as an independant team. ie: If John and Jane Doe wanted to play and both be eligible to win then to be fair to other players then they would have to pay $20 each and more than likely play in separate vehicles. I need these questions because I need to have all of the potential scenarios worked out so that on game day there is a written set of rules and no uncertainty. If all goes well and there is enough interest then I would like to make this a go around the 1st weekend of November. Definately a weekend day. Saturday or Sunday?
  15. I am planning on setting up a Saturday Geo caching event on souther Vancouver Island. I can not go into specific details at the moment. The plan is to run it like a competition with 1 or 2 major prizes at the end of the day.To be able to furnish prizes I would need to be able to charge an entry fee to take part in this game. The entry fee would be in the neighbourhood of $20 per player with entry money going towards the prizes and a bbq type of day end gathering in a picnic shelter in a park. What I need to know is #1- Is it in keeping with the geo caching rules to be able to charge an entry fee thats would cover prizes and food for the end of the day events? #2 is there anyone interested in this type of event? #3 if it is within in the rules of geocaching to charge an entry fee to a day long event like this is A maximum $20 entry fee reasonable and affordable for the average geo-cacher? I would like comments either posted here or send me an email message. I would also need help in organising this.If it does go ahead I have plans to visit with scout troops in securing their help. Asd I said in the beginning I do have a plan that I believe could be a fun exciting day. If you have comments or are able to help me with the logistics please contact me and also point as many of you're geo caching friends to this message board. It will only work with a good turn out of players. If not I will sit on this idea.
  16. I have logged some cache finds and they appear on my user profile page. I have also found and logged a travel bug and a geo coin. They do not appear on my user profile page. WHY NOT?
