  1. thanks! so would you know - does charter membership title get any perks these days? Just the distinction of being one of the first?
  2. I just checked Itsnotaboutthenumbers.com and it says you have to be premium (I'm not now... I was though) or a charter member (I am!). but it still doesn't let me do pocket queries
  3. member or premium member? Pocket queries look like they are only for premium members? Or you just get more / customized ones as premium? thanks!
  4. I'm seeing on some people's profiles (all are premium members - does it come with that level of membership or just those devoted enough to that level would bother with it?) really cool graphics showing how many caches they found per month, etc... how do you make those? thanks!
  5. I haven't been caching in months. Found 4 today and each had a bunch of 'branded' items that cacher's left - pencils, geocoins with their names on them, etc. Very neat to see people going to that length. But... do you take those? Won't they fill up the cache and not leave space for tradable items? I know part of what I and my kids looked for when caching was the interesting and sometimes useful things that people would leave - space blanket, water gauge, small tools and parts, etc. I know today, I left a USB network adapter (plug cat 5 cable into it and then plug into usb port on a PC), palm mini keyboard and a fm adapter to play your mp3 through your car radio. But all the coins and pencils were taking up a fair amount of space. thanks!
  6. If $50 includes shipping and a cable, that is a very good price. You ought to get a buyer! Yes, it comes with shipping and a cable... at $60 another cacher felt it was a tad too high so I lowered it... http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=216507
  7. Please see: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...mp;qpid=3875722 for the latest price
  8. I listed this before, but with a price in the title. As time goes on, I'll be lowering the price till someone buys it. Is this a reverse auction? For sale: Magellan GPS-315 in, I think, pretty good condition. Helped us find 90+ caches. Comes with the combination PC data cable / car power supply cable and user manual. The cable has 3 connectors - 1 to attach to the GPS, 1 for cigarette lighter power and 1 is a serial DB9 to connect to your PC (you can get a USB to serial adapter if your PC likely doesn't have a serial port anymore!) We're finding that it jumps around way too much for us - it'll say GZ is just a few feet away, walk around looking for the cache and then it says we're 50 - 100' away. Head off that way, and same thing happens. Is that just us getting bad at 'caching? Or what? It does show speed accurately when in the car, it does get us to the caches, it just jumps around a lot! Looking to sell all that for $50, inc. shipping in the US to start. I plan to keep dropping the price till we get a buyer, so check back if this is too high for you and check the newest message for the current lower price. I'm looking to upgrade to a color GPS and my wife limits the number of gadgets I can have! : ) Please email me if you have any questions.
  9. I just want this for caching (i have a garmin gps for the car which works great), so extra ram for maps, i am thinking, isn't a big deal for me. and the legend hcx is more expensive than the venture HC from what I can see... https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=...areProduct=8707 I like the Venture hc for the color but don't know how bad the 500 points will limit me (likely not much - with my old unit, I'd manually enter the caches I was looking for that day. with the usb cable though, when it's easier to dump info to the unit, I might want more in there?
  10. I'm in the same situation and was looking at the Venture HC or Legend H. But the price for the Venture HC is the just about the same as the Legend H, so might as well get that? the Ventgure HC is $130 from Amazon, including slow shipping. as for the models, some things I learned: H means high sensitivity C means color screen x mean externally added memory (SD card or similar) Correct me if I am wrong on this: Vista is the same as Legend, except that they add barametric pressure and magnetic compass Venture has basic maps Legend (and Vista?) don't have maps the garmin website says the etrex H is not geocaching friendly. It's cheaper than the legend H. Anyone know why they say that about the etrex H? Oh, it uses a serial cable vs. USB for the other models. Is that why? https://buy.garmin.com/shop/compare.do?cID=...areProduct=8707 thanks!
  11. I've been seeing all the neat stats in some user's profiles and thought that was a perk of premium membership. But then I saw it was done by FindStatGen, which I then found is a macro in GSAK. So I got GSAK and FindStatGen.... now what?! I looked throught the FAQs and realize I need to get the data of all my finds from geocaching.com into the app. but how? Is that a pocket query that premium members can do? or is there something else that I am missing? thanks!
  12. For sale: Magellan GPS-315 in, I think, very good condition. Helped us find 80+ caches. Comes with the combination PC data cable / car power supply cable and user manual. The cable has 3 connectors - 1 to attach to the GPS, 1 for cigarette lighter power and 1 is a serial DB9 to connect to your PC (you can get a USB to serial adapter if your PC likely doesn't have a serial port anymore!) 13. I'm selling this Magellan GPS 315. It comes with the user manual. It does work, but I am getting frustrated with how much it seems to jump around these days. It'll say we're within a few feet of the cache and then send us 100' back to where we were a few minutes earlier. Not sure how we found 70 - 80 caches with this, but it's the one we started with back in 2001, so I guess it's served us well. Do they get less sensitive with age? In the car, it'll get our speed exactly. and overall, it does work. just not as precise as newer units? I need to sell this to motivate me to buy another unit. Buy this understanding my experience with it recently. Give it to your kids to practice with or use as a spare? $55 includes shipping to anywhere in the US. NO PROMISES, but I am 99% sure I can come up with the car power supply / data cable (that has a DB 9 serial connector on it) to allow you to transfer data to the unit from your PC.
  14. Price drop = $55 delivered not $60 The GPS 315 and data cable, delivered by Priority mail to anywhere in the US is $55.
  15. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=186129 I'm selling a GPS I just listed today.
  16. Check out the GPS we just listed: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=186129
  17. Not sure if it's the caches we are doing now, we are more finicky about our equipment or age (of us or the equpment , but we are selling this Magellan GPS 315 that has helped us find about 90 caches over the last few years. It works fine, it just feels like we'll just overshoot the cache more often these days and feel there's more accurate units out there (maybe its just an excuse to buy a unit with WAAS?!). Magellan says there's no tuneup available for the unit - either it works or not. It does work, it's just finicky / sluggish compared to what we expect - it'll say ground zero is 10' away, you move a bit then it'll say 70', etc. but then when you do go back and forth, it does find the cache and does say you are there! Hey, it is several year old technology? That said, it is a good machine and it has helped us find and hide loads of caches. It comes with a cable that allows you to run it off of the cigarette lighter in the car, and connect the unit to your PC via a serial cable for communications with the appropriate PC software (not included) for uploading caches to the unit (we've done that) and I believe downloading of your routes, etc to the PC (I think it does that with the right software). Here's a stock picture: http://www.4x4books.com/images/mg315b.jpg The unit overall looks good. There's some scuffs on the screen, but for most of the unit's life there was a plastic protector film over it, so it looks better than its age. The GPS 315 and data cable, delivered by Priority mail to anywhere in the US is $60. Great as an inexpensive way to get into the hobby, a spare unit, something for the kids to play with or as your primary unit, knowing that at least we feel it's sluggish / tree cover here in NJ causes the readings to jump around.
  18. At the end of a cache name, are some letters and numbers. What is that and what does it represent? are they the waypoint name: Geocaching uses a suggested waypoint for a cache, created automatically when a cache has been created. We generate a waypoint "GC Code" based on the ID of the cache. It is optional, but makes it easier to locate a cache on the geocaching web site. and does that mean anything? Are they assigned sequentially? Or geographically? Thanks!
  19. OK, how about $65 including shipping AND that data / car power supply cable!?
  20. I'm seeing loads of friends with the on the dash navigation GPSs (TomTom, etc). I really like those. Is there a some sort of model that I can use with GPS - enter coordinates and has resolution to 3 decimal places, runs on batteries and is portable for walking around... AND will get you somewhere when you enter an address / has maps? Thanks!

  22. Thanks for the comments. As for a micro cache, 2 things 1. In today's environment, in the middle of a small town looking around for a cache will likely get the local police responding? In the middle of a wooded park, no problem spending 10s of minutes looking around. 2. Speaking of rules, they also say that you should / need to get permission to hide the cache? Realistically who do you talk to that has the authority / willingness to say yes? It's easier for a beaurocrat (sp?) to say no and CYA than say yes. And even if you say yes, who's to say that person does have the authority? Parks dept. supercedes public works? Police supercede Parks? Rock, paper Scizzors? What's with that locationless cache category?! I have to read up on THAT. Sounds neat. But backwards? Everyone caching is looking for a different item tied to the topic? Interesting. And yeah, I read the rules, so no need to snip them. My point in this thread was to comment that I think the rules as they are, for a virtual cache are a bit restrictive. Some said they'd rather find a mini vs a virtual. I would love a virtual that gets me somewhere interesting. It comes down to what you want out of the hobby and should Jeremy / this site be too restrictive to direct the hobby 1 way or another? you are free to not bother looking for a virtual if you don't want to find that type of cache. But should people be restricted from listing a virtual cache because it's a great 'view' rather than there's something interesting there? I and my family love caching - it gets us outside and to very interesting places. GIven the option, I'd love to have the choice of looking for 1 or more of 100 caches, some virtuals, some not, vs. having to choose from 50 caches that are only physical caches... I am the search engine. Don't prefilter the potential sites for me?
  23. I don't know if others besides me can see the virtual cache that I submitted: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...19-4e9e36876cdd It has a helicopter on display there: http://www.longhill.us/copter.jpg But it was turned down and it was an interesting learning experience. I wasn't familiar with the rules: http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#virtual I remember finding a virual cache with my son at the Atlantis hotel - a fountain of horses. I'm curious of people can see this unapproved cache and feel it should / shouldn't be approved. Virtual Cache Posting Guidelines - from the rules link above: 1. A virtual cache must be a physical object that can be referenced through latitude and longitude coordinates.- YES. That object should be semi-permanent to permanent - YES A trail is a trail, a beach is a beach, a view is a view; but a trail/beach/view is NOT a virtual cache. A cache has to be a specific distinct GPS target - not something large like a mountain top or a park, however special those locations are. my thinking / opinion is that a vantage point in a park to see a great view IS / SHOULD BE allowed as a cache. 2. A virtual cache must be novel, of interest to other players, and have a special historic, community or geocaching quality that sets it apart from everyday subjects - a helicopter in the middle of town? I think that meets it?prospective finder. Signs, memorials, tombstones or historical markers are among the items that are generally too common to qualify as virtual caches. Unusual landmarks or items that would be in a coffee table book are good examples. If you don't know if it is appropriate, contact your local approver first, or post a question to the forums about your idea. 3. There should be one or more questions about an item at a location, something seen at that location, etc., that only the visitor to that physical location will be able to answer. The questions should be difficult enough that it cannot be answered through library or web research. The use of a "certificate of achievement" or similar item is not a substitute for the find verification requirement. There's a logo on the top of the 'copter and I ask what type of animal is it. I don't know how many different animals were used in army insignias, but the answer is likely in a library. if the guy wants to go to the library and guess / not get off their butt and look for the cache, I think he's just cheating himself / not much you can do about it / shouldn't penalize other cachers from going to see this neat item? Any thoughts?
