  1. The touch screens across the GPSr board have big weaknesses. I'd much rather have the non-touch screen for readability outside. I'm excited for this 60 series update. It looks great and has some sweet features. But I agree the pricing is weird. I'd pay $350 for the 62 model IF it had memory cards for expansion. If indeed it doesn't, then I'm looking at the DeLorme's new Earthmate PN-60.
  2. But then again, look at this: This short description says it DOES have a micro SD.
  3. Total bummer on no data cards for the 62. Price point on the 62s is $50 more than DeLorme's new un-yet released PN-60. Plus the DeLorme has double+ on board memory. This may be a substantial blow to Garmin for DeLorme. I'm totally chapped about the no cards thing. That said, if I look at how much of my 2GB map card I'm actually using on my Cx, it's about 1.3GB... so maybe not such a big deal.
  4. This makes mine heart happy. Where is it officially saying 5000 caches????
  5. Yay! We know the specs now! Mapping rocks, sweet old timey form factor, quad helix high sensitivity madness, paperless geocaching! The one glaring oversight - 2000 waypoint (geocache?) limit. WHAT?! L+A+M+E!
  6. This is wise advice. Speculation is always and only just that until the truth has been established. I think *most* people would agree that not having to edit .GPX files from Pocket Queries before using them should be the standard for any GPSr geared for paperless caching. Time will tell if this is the case for the PN-60.
  7. It's incredible, really. If this thing even had basic topography, I'd have bought it along time ago. The road map is super awesome. I always wondered how it would be in Canada, as our stuff seems to be last updated after Britain, Germany, Luxemburg, Afghanistan . . . I've been impressed with the GC since it was first released, look like a great little unit!
  8. I'm with Entropy on this one. Garmin, Magellan, Lowrance, heck even my iPod Touch app iGeocacher can correctly display all the cache information without having to edit the supplied Pocket Queries from Groundspeak - and have been doing so, some longer than others, but it's being done. I'm totally over the moon about this new PN-60. It's like a nuclear submarine in the midst of a bunch of sail boats. But this .GPX parsing issue is like having a screen door in the side of the submarine! I just don't get it.
  9. I gathered from that podcast though that with the PN-60 this mess had been changed. It *seems* that it is more of a drag & drop affair now without having to re-tool the .GPX files. I'm kind of shocked that it isn't already. Several other units already have paperless caching that is simply just drag n' drop without editing. EDIT: when I went back and re-listened to the podcast, from 14:00-14:15 I hear Chip saying about the data "whether it comes from GSAK or the geocaching.com website or topo usa, once it gets into that standardized GPX format the device can read it in and knows exactly what to do with it" I take that to mean that the data coming straight from a Pocket Query is loadable as is into the PN-60. No?
  10. I was under the impression you needed to use Cache Register to load .GPX files (which I thought was cumbersome and silly and another $10 rip off). Obviously I don't have a DeLorme unit (yet) - but the Podcast made it sound like this ability to drag and drop multiple .GPX PQ files was new deal for the Earthmate. Perhaps I heard that part of the podcast wrong. (I was wrong once...when I thought I was wrong...)
  11. I dismissed DeLorme because of their lack of Canadian mapping content and because they aren't Mac OS X friendly. HOWEVER. With the advent of the PN-60, and expanded functionality, I perked up my ears. I did a little digging and stumbled across this podcast where Chip from DeLorme gives some very exciting information regarding Canadian Mapping (topo & world-wide arial) and geocaching. Specifically, with the PN-60 you don't need cache register or any other mediator software. Simply copy the .GPX files to the card or internal memory and you've got it made! Limited only to the space on your memory card - which up to 32GB is pretty much limitless I'd say! I'm very excited about this PN-60. Depending on what Garmin offers in the upcoming GPS Map62 release, I will probably be going for a PN-60. The wireless/spot stuff is awesome but I live in the prairies so even if I get lost, I can still see my house. hehheeh....... check out the podcast, pretty cool for Canadians! EDIT: Check out GPScentral.ca's link for some cool screen shots from the PN-60.
  12. I had enquired about the mapping on the GC in the tech section of the forum here, especially regarding what levels of roads there are for Canada (I'm thinking rural and desolate like where I live). And a cacher was good enough to send me a screen shot of some coordinates I supplied that had some serious boonies roads. I'll be a monkey's uncle! Those roads showed up! So needless to say, the road mapping on the GC is fantastic - even for Canada! These screen captures are of these coordinates. N 49° 15.727 W 102° 13.455 Check them out on Google maps then go back to the screen cap. I'm impressed!
  13. I came across valuable information (Jan 2010) regarding the features of the PN-60 - especially for Canadian residents (mapping) and also Mac users. Check out this podcast for an interview with Chip from DeLorme for the lowdown. An exciting aspect of the PN-60 will be the ability to simply copy/paste .GPX files (PQs) to either internal memory or data cards and then select which ones you want active making the number of PQs nearly "limitless" based on the capacity of your media. That's cool! This has me much more interested in DeLorme knowing that I don't have to use some other software to transfer caches. Also the web features for world wide imagery and Canadian Topo totally rocks the set. Can't wait to see this develop further.
  14. A big thank you to EScout for sending me the screen caps. For all of the Canadians considering this unit, the basemap *does* have really remote rural roads on it! Good to know and thanks again for your help!
  15. I'm sorry to have put you out over this. All of the available samples (that I have seen) show US American cities. I live in rural Canada and I would like to see the NAVTEQ data as is on this unit to see if indeed secondary roads show up. Please feel free not to help...
  16. Still really considering this unit. Have some question about the basemap - don't live near a dealer. Can someone show me a screenshot of the basemap/road detail at N 49° 15.727 W 102° 13.455 at say 200m or 600ft? whatever's closest. That would be super helpful for me. Thanks in advance.
  17. So with the Explorist GC - what's left that is currently buggy with it? All the reviews I have read have been very favorable, other than the famous Magellan "boomerang" effect. Is there anything else? I am still torn between the GC and the Lowrance Out&Back for a paperless unit.
  18. I always hear about how bad touch screens are to see in the daylight - how's the Out&Back?
  19. In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the... Anyone? Anyone? ...the Great Depression, passed the... Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered? ...raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression. Today we have a similar debate over this. Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial. Does anyone know what Vice President Bush called this in 1980? Anyone? Something-d-o-o economics. 'Voodoo' economics.
  20. For as much as I like the pros of the Endura line up, the cons are really stupid! Something as key as navigating to a waypoint should come out of the box, not still waiting for an upgrade 4 FW updates later. It's almost like these things were cranked out WAY too soon! You read stuff like this and the reviews on Amazon and it's hard to get a good impression – yet I am sure these units are fantastic in many ways. These problems just seem silly to me.
  21. I have used projections on a few caches. It would be a nice feature to have, but for me it isn't a complete deal breaker. I still have my trusty 60Cx that does all of the advanced features that aren't showing up in many current units. -- That said, it would be nice to have one do-it-all unit.
  22. Can Endura project a waypoint though? I can't find evidence of this in the manual. I'm glad to hear that the 1.4 update is awesome. Of all the GPS units I have been researching, this one has *nearly* everything I'm looking for (mainly Mac friendliness and paperless caching). It's really an exciting time for us as so many manufacturers are making new and exciting units available!
  23. My understanding is that the Sierra, being the grand exalted champion of the lineup, has mucho mapping, as well as the compass, altimeter, etc. that the Safari has. But here is a link to compare the three units. Lowrance Comparison
