  1. I don't see this as limited only to Chirp. I see it as a developing aspect of geocaching/tours which, if a person is upgrading GPSr units, one would be wise to have accommodated for it now which is why I brought up this discussion in the first place. Not having the wireless feature (in addition to having no microSD slot) is a really big killer for the GPSMAP 62. You can get it all and the wireless with a Garmin Dakota 20 for less money. It just doesn't make any sense. The wireless part is another variable that will be a cool feature in the next couple years - potentially. Better to have it just in case IMHO.
  2. Good insights. I think it will pave the way for other wireless ideas though, similar to the chirp. I see this kind of like the internet in its infancy. Some said it will die tomorrow, some saw possibilities, but nobody really knew the grand potential to change everything with it. Other manufacturers may get on board and create cool stuff! The heart rate monitor point is well taken. @ DFX - saving $110 bucks is why I'd get a Dakota 20 over a 62s to get the same features.
  3. My features/price argument only applies to the base 62 model. The 62/78 also have the same wireless features, compass, altimeter, etc, as the Oregon/Dakota models. Just noticed you specified the base model 62. Does it not have wireless and the other features? Nope, does not. Your point makes sense.
  4. Before the emergence of the Chirp and the *need* for a wireless communication option (I mocked this option earlier in a previous thread), the GPSMAP 62 base model was nearly a nice upgradable option for we GPSMAP 60Cx folks. But now, you really have to consider a Dakota 20 with compass, altimeter, expansion card and wireless for $309 CDN vs. the feature-less GPSMAP 62 for $319 CDN. The pricing doesn't make sense, but that aside, why would anyone buy the 62 over a Dakota 20 -- especially in light of the cool possibilities Chirp brings?? I think Chirp is a game changer and will actually kill the GPSMAP 62 or at the very least increase 62s sales because poor upgrading schmucks like me will probably jump the extra hundred bones to get the wireless. (OR, we might "downgrade" to the Dakota 20 and save the $110 ) Any thoughts?
  5. I just saw it on the gpscity.ca website on the frontpage. It's listed at $22.95 Pre-Order
  6. I use an 8GB iPod Touch for geocaching. I bought the iGeocacher application. I've found it to be a great portable cache database. Check it out, it will probably do everything you're looking for. http://www.ayefon.com/geo/
  7. Tee Hee... It's still wiggidy whack! Near as I can tell, they have fixed it in firmware ... for everybody but you
  8. That's good to hear. I could never figure out why Garmin didn't fix this before. I emailed tech support, explaining the problem and including the fix and they told me I had a defective unit. Makes no sense.
  9. And you've mounted the card in OS X? That's good news!
  10. I just converted the 3.2 Ibycus map from Windoze into Mac format. If anyone is interested in it, PM me and I will send you a link. I am currently going to try and upload it to my mobile me account and see if I can actually host it for download without having to go the torrent route. EDIT: Bummer, max file size is 1GB. Torrents it is! PS: I just tested it on my GPSMAP 60Cx and it works fine.
  11. The issue with my 60Cx is that after you mount the 2GB memory card (either in the GPS in mass storage mode or in a card reader) in OS X, Spotlight indexes the card and puts hidden files on it that Garmin's Software can't handle. The GPS itself crashes and will not acquire satellites if it boots up at all. If I use the Terminal to delete the hidden files just before I unmount the card, then it works perfectly. My query is if Garmin fixed this stupid problem in the 62 series.
  12. Anyone using the new 62 series with OS X? My old 60Cx still has issues when mounted as a volume (in USB mass storage mode) if ejected without deleting the hidden files Finder leaves on the data card. Has anyone experienced such weird behavior on the new 62 series? The most up to date firmware on the 60Cx has not resolved this issue - just wondering about the new 62 lineup. Thanks!
  13. The 2.1 version I downloaded originally was Mac compatible (ie: it worked natively with OS X Garmin Mapinstall). Is there a Mac compatible version of 3.1/3.2? Or are people just converting the PC version?
  14. Can anyone tell me if there is a 3.2 Ibycus Topo available for Mac OS X? I tried to search for torrents but didn't come up with anything. If you know a link and could post it that would be helpful. Thanks!
  15. I stopped at Target in Minot, ND yesterday and they had the GC on sale for $169.99. Not too shabby! I was very tempted to buy it on the spot. BUT I will hold out till the spring of 2011...
  16. Ok, but you can extract the file. That would work for my intended application. Thanks!
  17. GC users - is it possible to extract track logs (saved or current) from the GC and use them for geotagging photos?
  18. Does it log finds to the calendar or does it make use of cache logs like the Oregon?
  19. Hook your GPSr upto the computer, copy your saved tracklog from the device to the hard drive/desktop. Then you can do 1 of 2 things. 1) upload directly to garmin connect through their "manual" option. Or, if you wanna export a saved track from Basecamp, just go File->Export Selected User Data. Then, it exports ready to be uploaded to Garmin Connect (via the manual method).
  20. Unless I do the terminal code before unmounting my GPSMAP 60Cx, the problem remains. Software Version: 4.00 GPS SW Version: 3.00s Hmm... that should only be a valid fix if the Garmin is specifically stumbling over the Spotlight folders and doesn't mind any/all of the other "dot" files. AND... isn't this fixed in the most current Garmin firmware? Anyone who is still seeing this problem what firmware are you using on your device?
  21. Hey, that's slick - should be a one-time fix then after this code is run!
  22. REALLY? Is that right? You can just use the Finder to navigate to whichever pre-cut map portion you want and load it without having to use Topo NA 9 to do it??? That'd be cool! Also, with the file system on the PN-60, can you extract .gpx track files too without using TopoNA software? (ex: mount the volume, copy the .gpx natively to the desktop) You can. On Windows, an "installer" pops up when you put in the disc and lets you select the states/regions you want to put on the GPS or SD card. All it's doing is copying files, it is not really installing a program; you can do the same with Finder or Windows Explorer by looking at the contents of the DVD. The files (at least for T8, I assume they've done the same for T9) are logically named so it should be simple to figure out which ones you need/want.
  23. Saving tracks would be a great feature on this unit!
