You can get maps for Garmins for most european countries and many areas in asia. The benefit is, you can find many free maps too, but depends on what country you are looking for, the free map is not always a good choice. If you want to use self scanned maps (raster maps), you can choose a Magellan Triton as best offer. The Garmins are not that open like the Magellans. For free Maps (but a very low annual fee for membership) refer to www.maps4me.net With a Garmin and commercial maps, better get the Oregon, cause raster maps needs a bigger screen and looks lousy on the Dakota, if you want to use some your own material.

The brightness compared to a Oregon is lower, but battery life is 60% longer. The first units had a power on failure that was corrected by a newer firmware release only two weeks later. If you buy a new unit, there should be no problem with this. In any case, check for the latest firmware and update the new device. The touchscreen can be calibrated by user in a few easy steps, if necessary. Mostly this dont need to be done on a new unit. Compared to the Vista, the Dakota has a better responding compass, a familiar battery life, but has a darker screen in direct sunlight. Benefits are the paperless feature and the capability to handle multiple map-files up to a couple of thousand map-tiles. So you can take free downloadable maps with you and all on one memorycard. For 300 Dollars, its a good deal. If you already own a Vista HCx, it might not be such a great advantage, but the Dakota 20 is a stable unit. Its just a smaller Oregon. The Oregons have a larger screen and can display more text on it. Going paperless is a bit more comfortable with this. Youre choice.

From my point of view here in germany, i prefer the UK-made "Satmap Active 10" for hiking and biking. I own many other brands and models but my Satmap has an outstanding list of features and it work like it should. But this toy is not available to the USA, cause there arent any maps covering Amerika. And the Satmap cant do autorouting, so this is not a recommed choice for you so far. I tried a Lowrance Endura Safari, but this thing is still not finish and more in a kind of public beta testing. I really cant say much about the Endura and if its the best choice for a couple of years from now on. Today its not. Magellan comes with a new unit, presenting it in a few weeks (end of March). They will not make the same horrible failures like they did with the Triton-desaster, so it might be a good deal. But you have to wait till summer and on some first reviews to go sure with that. Again, from my far away point of view, DeLorme look like a good company selling good products and especially for good customer service. In May, they start selling the new PN-60, in design a follower to the PN-40, wich is going to be discontinued. Outdoor and Streetmaps for the U.S. are included, so i would look out for this one, if it should not be a Garmin again. For a Garmin, there is the Oregon 450/550. Only if a unit with a touchscreen would be solid enough to survive six years of usage, i dont know for sure. Or choose a older model, like the GPSmap 60 CSX or GPSmap 76 CSX.

Garmins Colorado and Oregon had terrible bugs in the first half Year out in the market. Lowrances Endura are still no good deal, they are in their first months on market too. Remember the first year of Magellans Triton? The last update, one and a hlaf year later make it a good functioning thing but it still misses some promised features they never make it into the Triton now. Do we see a bright light now? If there is a new Magellan out before summer, dont think about to buy one until its christmas. Not even one new GPSr in the last two years was as good as marketing said before so you better wait until some dorks bought the first hundreds and start real beta testing with their new toys.

I try an answer and greetings from germany. Because it was much cheaper, i bought an american Endura instead of an european one. Only a different Basemap, but here in Germany my Safari would cost me more than $540 (price in euros 350,-). So i got my Safari from overseas. Map-Updates (Update 1.10) are pretty much useless for me, but the first Softwareupdate (Update 1.20) helps alot. Importing Geocaches is much easier now, but there is still a dark side. Some tiny bugs, like wrong energy source selection, so you have to swap NiMH with Alkaline to get a correct energy scale. Once you know this, nimh´s last 3-4h longer before the units shutdown. Why i hate it taking the Endura with me for a search, is the navigating use for a manually typed in waypoint. If you select a geocache, traditional one for sure, the Endura guides you to the cache until you select on the unit, that you found the cache. But if you make a multi-stage cache, you need to type in the next stages coordinates as a waypoint and this way, the Endura brings you up to 10-20m (dep. on speed) before it stops navigation and displays that you reached the spot. If you look out for a really tiny object, you will hate this message. All you can do now in the field, is to look at the coordinates on the screen and try to get as close as you can to the coordinates you have in your mind or on a paper (cause you cant see them on the screen in this moment). Hate is that feeling when you realize, that some user-selectable data-fields are not continuously actualizing themself. So in my case, i went up and down a hill in the snowwhite woods of germany looking for the one tree, that should have a cutting mark somewhere on it. It tooks 30 minutes, it was the 3rd stage, the two stages before this wasnt nice either and for stage four i needed to make a waypoint averaging. The Enduras cant help you with that, no sighting feature, no waypoint averaging. Days later, i returned to this cache and used one of my favorites gpsr (a Satmap Active 10, no maps for US for this are available). The navigating issue should changed with the next software update, lowrance technician told me this. If sighting and waypoint averaging too, i dont know? I hope so, cause you need it often for a multi-cache. Update 1.30 is no software update, it only adds a extra map viewer to use Navionics marine maps with Endura. On the international marine-convention "Boot" in Germany, Navico (Lowrance) employees explained that the Endura software cant use navionics maps for the moment, but will do it until the end of this year. To start selling the new maps, Endura gets this 1.3 Add-on patch. So the real new release you need to wait on is 1.40, as this should update the unit software. For now, geocaching with Endura is nice but multiple stages are a pain-in-the-arse-Lowrance-style. Its the accuratest receiver ive ever had but low on features.

Im Prinzip ist ein Tape das selbe wie eine CD, nämlich ein Tonträger. Kannst also auch eine Achtspurkassette verstecken, macht keinen Unterschied. Im Gegensatz zur CD hat man beim Tape allerdings schon mal ein Abspielproblem. Ich habe in meinem Haushalt kein funktionierendes Abspielgerät mehr. Liesse sich aber zumindest preiswert organisieren. Laut dem deutschen Urheberrecht (die Schweizer sehen es im Vergleich etwas lockerer), ist eine Vervielfältigung allenfalls gestattet, wenn es sich um ein seit mindestens 2 Jahren vergriffenes Werk handelt. (UrhG §53 Satz 2 Ziffer 4b) Allerdings für den Privatgebrauch. Munter in die Welt frei lassen ist so oder so nicht erlaubt. Gerade im Fall einer veralteten Kassette wird das niemanden Heutzutage mehr stören, aber OK ist es nicht. Warum überhaupt Kopien? Warum nicht einfach alte Originale? Statt für 1,50 zu eBay geht die zigmal gehörte CD dann eben in den Cache. Kein Ärger, kein schlechtes sondern sogar ein gutes Beispiel und jeder hat was davon.

Ich denke, man sollte erst gar nicht damit anfangen, rechtlich nicht Einwandfreies in Geocaches zu verstecken. Es ist zwar unwahrscheinlich das plötzlich Waffen oder Drogen in Dosen getauscht werden, nur weil einer mit CD-Kopien angefangen hat, aber auch "Kleinvieh macht Mist". Wenn das Schule machen würde und überall gebrannte Spielfilme und Musikalben vergraben würden, käme das Hobby in Verruf. Dann würde wohl die GVU (Urheberrechtsschützer) mit GPS-Empfänger nach Raubkopiernestern fahnden oder vielleicht gleich den Cache von der Polizei beschlagnahmen lassen. Nicht bei einer CD, aber wenn es plötzlich Jeder macht, sicher schon irgendwann. Seit Jahren fliegt bei mir im Schrank eine alte Pistole herum, mit einem nicht mehr gängigen Kaliber. (Ich bin Sportschütze) Einfach wegwerfen darf ich das Ding nicht, es wird mir schon lästig. Könnte ich ja auch mal in so eine Munitionsbox legen. Ich brauch die ja nicht mehr und hier und da ne Knarre in der Landschaft macht doch sicher nichts aus. Oder? Drei Tage später hätte ich das SEK im Hausflur und der Kampfmittelräumdienst würde Geocaching spielen. Uncool. Also leg ich keine Knarre in einen Cache und hoffentlich kein anderer ne Raubkopie rein. Ist einfach nicht erlaubt.

Den Gedanken hatte ich auch kürzlich, aber abgesehen von Tieren und Insekten ist der Mensch dann gleich das nächste Problem. Gut, gewisse Verpackungsformen und oft auch der Cache selbst halten Tieren wohl stand. Bären gibts hier ja keine. Aber Geruchsdicht ist fast nichts, ausser vielleicht Konservendosen und Einmachgläser. Plastik und Folien lassen Gerüche durch und ziehen Nagetiere oder Insekten wie Ameisen und Lebensmittelmotten an, die sich dann durch die Verpackung fressen. Und selbst wenn man eine Dose Ravioli, oder ein Glas Silberzwiebeln oder ein Erfrischungsgetränk einpackt, bleibt noch der Mensch. Auf manche Cache scheint die Sonne und erwärmt ihn, dann leiden Lebensmittel auch in Dosen. Dann muss der Mensch das Ding am Besten auch vor Ort konsumieren können, womit die Ravioli schon einen Minuspunkt kassieren. Wenn ich schon Kochgeschirr mitbringen muss, kann ich auch gleich noch einen Einweggrill und zwei Steaks einpacken und was Richtiges essen. Und dann bleibt der Müll. An manchen Ecken liegt so schon genug Abfall und in freier Natur fehlt es an Mülleimern. Wenn ich jetzt noch Dosencola in die Caches packe, werden sich die geleerten Behältnisse dort sammeln. Und für Familien ergibt sich noch ein viel wichtigerer Ablehnungsgrund. Man bringt Kindern bei, nichts zu essen, was auf dem Boden lag und nichts von Fremden anzunehmen. Wenn man nun aber munter irgendwelche Kaugummis aus Geocaches konsumiert, war die Erziehungslehre für die beobachtenden Kinder komplett umsonst. Und irgendwann kommt ein Geocache-Gegner dann auf die Idee und sabotiert den Cache nicht konventionell sondern platziert vielleicht Mentos mit Kieselsteinfüllung oder Prinzenrolle mit Schlaftabletten ... Futter lieber selber kaufen.

Nur weil ich in meinen Lieblingscache (immerhin ein zweistündiger Multi) sogar Schmuck gelegt habe (Perlenkette, Silberarmreif, Korallenketten) würde ich im Leben nicht erwarten, das dort jemand als Nächstes Gold einlagert. Wohl aber ist die Motivation größer, gerade auch die Dauerbegeisterung. Wenn man wenigstens einmal im Monat einen wertigeren Schatz findet, sucht man den Nächsten mit mehr Elan. Ein halbes Jahr lang Ü-Eier und man verliert wohl die Lust.

Nachdem ich das Hobby gestartet habe und langsam aber sicher um Koblenz herum konzentrische Kreise in meiner Suche nach Geochaches ziehe, ist mir der "Müll" in diesen Caches bereits aufgefallen. Ich habe aber auch schon wirklich schöne Dinge gefunden, ein Pokerspiel etwa und einmal an einem heissen Tag im May nach einem D4-Cache war ein Erfrischungstuch (diese Citrustücher auch der Apotheke) extrem angenehm vorzufinden. Meine Lieblingsfundstellen habe ich gerade gestern erst mit Zeug aus meinem Haushalt bestückt, die noch einen Nutzen erfüllen. Alte Perlenkette (echt), Silberarmreif, alter Fotoapparat, Ansichtskarten der Stadt, Bleistifte, Musik-CDs die ich nicht mehr höre, Spielfilm-DVDs von Fernsehzeitschriften, ältere Computerspiele, Dinge mit Werbeaufdruck wie Taschenlampen, Taschenmesser und Flaschenöffner die ich von Handelsvertretern bekomme. Also Zeug das in Kisten, Schubladen und Regalen auf den Tag warte, da ich sie wegwerfe. Manches mit Wert, aber selbst für die aus der Mode gekommenen Südseekorallenketten meiner Oma bekäme ich bei eBay vielleicht 5 Euro. Alles nur Klimperkram. Plastiktrödel aus dem Ü-Ei oder Kaugummiautomaten find ich peinlich. Zumindest die Caches meiner Nachbarschaft werde ich also in Zukunft aufwerten. Ich bin den Krempel los und der Spass am Fund ist größer.

Erstmal: Nachts ist ein Friedhof tabu. Eine Friedhofsverwaltung gibt nicht umsonst Öffnungszeiten bekannt und vermeidet Verbote aus Rücksichtnahme auf Angehörige die eventuell auch zu Ausweichzeiten das Bedürfnis der Trauer oder Grabpflege haben. Ein Friedhof ist nachts nicht beleuchtet und man dürfte bei der Suche nach Hinweisen für einen Cache schnell das eine oder andere Grab übertreten statt den Weg zu erkennen. Tagsüber habe ich aber auch schon einen Friedhof samt GPS erkundet. Nicht weit von meiner Wohnung in Koblenz befindet sich der Hauptfriedhof. Wer sich mal die Mühe macht und etwa in Google Maps die Stadtplanansicht von Koblenz aufruft, sieht das es ein Areal von den Ausmaßen eines zusätzlichen Stadtteils ist. Zentral gelegen und zudem abgesehen von den Flussufern und dem auswärts gelegenen Waldes eine der wenigen Grünanlagen der Stadt ist. Einen Park gibt es in der Stadt nicht. Geogerds Birthdaycache heisst der Cache und es ist eine 2-3 stündige Kompletterkundung dieses Friedhofes von den Gräbern einiger RAF-Mitglieder, über Dichter, Verlagshausgründern, Koblenzer Stadtväter bis hin zu den Kriegsgäbern. Das Ziel liegt an einem Ausgang neben dem Parkplatz fernab der Gräber. Es finden auch Führungen über den Friedhof statt, welche ähnliche Streckenverläufe haben. Gegen solch ein Tour habe ich nichts. Aus Pietät habe ich während der Tour das GPS-Gerät nicht auf Grabsteinen abgelegt und auch für Notizen nur Mülleimer und Parkbänke als Schreibunterlage verwendet. Wer hingegen im Dunkeln über einen Friedhof stolpert, vermutlich Anwohnererschreckend mit dem Lichtkegel einer Taschenlampe, macht sich sogar leicht strafbar nach Strafgesetzbuch §168 Ziffer 2 (Gräber beschädigen) bzw. 3 (wenn die Polizei von den Nachbarn gerufen wurde, steht schon der Versuch im Raum). StGb § 168 Störung der Totenruhe (1) Wer unbefugt aus dem Gewahrsam des Berechtigten den Körper oder Teile des Körpers eines verstorbenen Menschen, eine tote Leibesfrucht, Teile einer solchen oder die Asche eines verstorbenen Menschen wegnimmt oder wer daran beschimpfenden Unfug verübt, wird mit Freiheitsstrafe bis zu drei Jahren oder mit Geldstrafe bestraft. (2) Ebenso wird bestraft, wer eine Aufbahrungsstätte, Beisetzungsstätte oder öffentliche Totengedenkstätte zerstört oder beschädigt oder wer dort beschimpfenden Unfug verübt. (3) Der Versuch ist strafbar.
