  1. Well as the OP I guess this makes my point and explains my question. I expect it just confirms the jokes about Essex boys and girls that we even have 3 caches in Devon & Cornwall I notice that in your revised list you skipped Essex. Probably very wise ...
  2. If you actually don't use the regions then you'd probably never care. But those of us who use GSAK do use the information so if you set your cache in the wrong region it messes up our pretty charts As for your profile location I think that you can probably choose any one you like. Viewing someone's profile doesn't show the region but does have their actual location (if they've added it) Where the region info comes in is over on the right where you will see under search options "List newest in (your home region)" Presumably in this case you would be better off to have West Midlands set as it will show you new caches there and not in Portsmouth
  3. I think this follows my original point. (?) I live in what is usually called "The South East" but I'm happy to use "Eastern England" if that's the correct one. I'm really not fussy. But "Southern England" is usually accepted as being everything south of the Midlands. Thus if that term is used anyone who doesn't bother to check will (rightly?) put everything from Cornwall to The Wash as being in the south. It's not the actual name that's the problem, it's making sure that people get the right one. I hesitate to suggest this, but couldn't our overworked reviewers reject any new caches in the wrong region? It would only be a matter of looking at the cache location in Google Earth with the overlay enabled. Yes I know the cache owner should have already done that but if everything could be safely left to the owners we wouldn't need the reviewers
  4. Thanks for all this. I can now see that I'm in the East of England for Geocaching purposes but the South East for most other things including the weather ) I've changed my profile and the one cache that I own. I also use GSAK so it would be useful if this info was included in all caches eventually but I bet I'm not the only one to have got it wrong... PS in Edit: Also a good place to thank Astartus for his map work for GSAK. Just downloaded from link above.
  5. Using the Geocaching "states" for UK I am left wondering if there is a definitive of list which counties are in which "states" I live on the Thames in Essex which could be in either South East England or East England. I'm sure I'm not the only one living on the edge so how can we check? And when looking for a cache in a "state" we need to hope that the owner knew where he was as well...
  6. Well I know, from the avatar, that Graculus has got wings but I was amazed when he published my (first) cache today only about 3 hours after I submitted it. And on a Bank Holiday too! Grovelling Thanks...
  7. This raises another point that has puzzled me. Why do some people put their dummy locations so far from the real cache? It can be quite annoying to find one in what seems to be a convenient location, only to find that it's some distance away when you solve it. Even as little as 100 metres off would still be too far to find the cache without solving the clue but would give a decent indication of where the cache is going to be.
  8. Ah! I see what you mean. It is possible to move or zoom just once but then it ignores any further clicks. I hadn't noticed that when I tried it out. Still a lot more useful than Edgemaster's which doesn't work for me at all although others seem to find it OK.
  9. I've never managed to get Edgemaster's OS script to work (I just get "Sorry this map tile cannot be served") but this one shows GetaMap fine. It almost works OK for me but I don't get the red arrow. Any ideas?
  10. Many thanks for trying anyway. I just picked a cache at random since it was the last one I found (yes, in the Thames Estuary) The zoom level is the Geocache default I assume? Clearing the cache makes no difference unfortunately. FYI I am using Firefox 3.0.1 and Greasemonkey 0.8.20080605W I have disabled My anti virus (Avast) and Firewall (Zone Alarm) and this made no difference. Oh well, it looks like it's not going to work for me. EDIT: I just noticed the + sign on the right so I clicked it: I can get the map in all the options apart from the top one (OS) Can I alter the script to make one of the others default?
  11. Well in a lighter moment it occurred to me that as my memory isn't what it once was I should be able to Geocache all by myself as I could place a cache and then probably forget where it was. But I never thought anyone would actually do it Thanks, you gave me a good laugh anyway...
  12. It happens on every cache I try. Taking one at random I look at the map properties and I get http: //openspace.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/osmapapi/ts?KEY=4B692F8F924E6AF7E0405F0AF160613D&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetMap&STYLES=&EXCEPTIONS=application%2Fvnd.ogc.se_inimage&FORMAT=image%2Fjpeg&LAYERS=1&SRS=EPSG%3A27700&BBOX=575250,181000,575500,181250&WIDTH=250&HEIGHT=250 I have added an extra space after the http: to get the full text to display in this message. The map box appears OK, I can make it bigger and smaller, look at the EULA and see the Lat/Long change as I move the mouse around. I just don't see any map, just "Sorry This map tile cannot be served at the moment" As others are OK it must be me but I don't know where to start
  13. Not just Latin. To some (like me) any mention of the specific type of plant is a cause for head scratching. I found one recently where the hint mentioned "blackthorn bush and a privet bush" and that meant nothing to me either When I found the cache I still didn't know which was which.
  14. Am I doing something wrong? All I get is "Sorry this map tile cannot be served at the moment"
  15. Oh I feel so much better now. You see I was starting to feel guilty at reading the hints and wondered if other Geocachers would shun me for it The trouble with hints, of course, is you don't know what they are until you read them (yeah obvious!) so until I decrypt it I won't know if it is cryptic or very specific. I have come across some where I need to Google to understand it, and others that tell me exactly where to look. I prefer not to read the latter but of course it's too late once I've read it. But like others I quickly forget anyway. What a great hobby this is Ralph
  16. Is it considered cheating in some way to use the hints? Should they be left until you've spent some time searching? If so, how long? I'm not sure that I could usually find a micro without a hint and surely it's better to use a hint than to rip bushes to pieces trying to find a hidden cache? As a novice I'm wondering what is considered "normal"? Ralph
