  1. Having the same issue and had to clear app cache and data as well. Hopefully this can be fixed cause it'll be hard to know if it's fixed or comes back and I end up with a bunch of logs that don't post.
  2. Hi there, Town Deputy-Mayor approached me. He's only slightly familiar with geocaching but wants to setup some kind of event in conjunction with an antique week next year. Problem is he wants to commercialize it in the sense that he wanted the caches inside the stores. I tried explaining that you can't easily cache in the store because of the loss of signal inside. I also told him that geocaching isn't to advertise and isn't to be commercialized in the sense of caches. He asked if caches could be placed outside the stores for the event. I'm still feeling uneasy about it. It's good to use it to entice people to come to town but to turn it into a way to get people to specific stores with a concern that these stores will try to get geocachers inside scares me. Thoughts?
  3. Personally, I recommend this... hehe Actually I still have mine in my kitchen on the windowsill. Anyone want to purchase it as an antique?
  4. Too lazy to read the whole thread and I have a feeling someone else has said this but for me it's the fact that if I haven't looked up the TB's goal I normally don't pick up in case I can't complete the goal for a while. I don't like holding a TB for more than a couple days.
  5. The HTML Export Feature on GSAK is indeed really cool. I love how it creates an index and you can search via name, distance, etc... Will be really useful if I have a hard time with a cache on my little trip this weekend.
  6. Hey there, I've got a pocket pc that doesn't have a gps in it or cell phone system. It's just a PDA from HP. A few years old but color screen and all. Heck you can watch movies on it. Anyways, just wondering if there's any software where i can download pocket queries or offline copies of cache pages with the information on the cache to be able to review on the road when caching.
  7. Sorry. Got kicked off when posting. Here's my original post: Ever turned a 3 terrain into a 5? I have on numerous occasions. 2 Come to mind. 1. I had just started caching during the spring melt. Decided to bushwack to a cache. 400 feet or so direct. Climbed into the snow and after about 75 feet I ended up waist high in muck, water and snow. Got to the cache and found a trail that led me back out another 500 feet down the road. 2. Yesterday I decided to tackle a 3 terrain up a hill. I was on the road and stopped when I was closest to the cache. Took off up the hill. It started off at about 30 degrees incline. Quite a steep one. Then became a 45 degree climb and at one point I had to climb over a small cliffside(only 2 feet high). By the last 20 or so feet up it was about 60 degrees and I had to grab onto trees to pull myself up. Not an easy feat considering I'm a large man 325 pounds. Finished climbing the 120 feet or so vertical and found an atv at the trail going around the hill and coming out about 200 feet from my car over a hill. Worth the view though. What are your stories?
  8. Hi there, I only have so much room before notes are cutoff on the Etrex VISTA HCX when I upload to my GPS. In the Notes I tend to put the cache type and difficulty followed by the hint in case I need it but I only get, say 20 characters or less(can't remember the exact number). Is there a program that will let me put in more. Say 40 or 60 characters? How about the title of the geocache?
  9. Hi there. There's an old mine that is open to the public(it's just an open cavern that doesn't go far in. I'm just wondering if anyone has any clue as to how I could put a cache in there since it's under the rocks and you would loose GPS signal going in. Some kind of puzzle cache with a waypoing near the cavern and some kind of puzzle to give you an idea of where to go from there without the gps? Any clue or idea would be great. Another cache like this where someone figured out a way to work it would be better.
  10. Well, I finally got my weekly mailer for last week which I always get on Friday. In fact it was for the week ending on the Thursday the 25th. But it is dated for today. Kinda strange. Maybe they're behind or something in our end.
  11. Like I said, it isn't in my spam folder which gmail cleanly seperates and puts into a seperate folder where I can see what hasn't gotten to me. It is not being sent to me for some reason. I've reset the checkmark in my profile to see if that'll make a difference but I can't see why it would. Should I follow up with an email to Groundspeak?
  12. And I should mention that I have gotten emails from Groundspeak. I get the notices when people find my caches or send me messages.
  13. Actually it's webmail. Gmail to be exact. My wife is on the same and got hers I believe
  14. Well that's strange. Two weeks in a row and nothing in the spam filter. Wonder what to do.
  15. Hi there. Last two weeks I haven't gotten the weekly notification. It is still turned on in my account profile and my email is correct. Also it hasn't been filtered as spam. Anyone else run into this?
  16. Got a Magellan Crossover and it just says arriving at destination about 10 meters from the waypoint and you can't get any closer without guessing. Any recommendations on a driving type gps that works better that isn't too different in price. I want something that gives me directions on the highway and works for geocaching.
  17. Is it against proper ettiquette to go back to a cache and write a note just to pick up a geocoin to move it somewhere else(not my own)? How about going back to your own cache to pick up a geocoin someone dropped in there?
  18. If you haven't found out yet, (and if you have then this answer is for anyone else wondering about their local area), the easiest way is to find the first log on a recently published cache in the area. The first log is always a "Reviewer Note" announcing the publication of the cache. Check a recently published cache, because older caches might not have this note, and it's possible the review has changed. Thanks, I also emailed contact@geocaching.com to see what they say about it.
  19. Yeah... the idea is not advertising the station. it's advertising the activity on the radio station and getting involved with a cache. We don't advertise where the cache is. The thruth is, for most caches, you need a gps to find it anyways. I doubt you'll get much more vandalism then we run into already. I've already spoken about geocaching in general on the air. I just think that those that have a gps but have never even considered the posibility might be interested. The other reason I want to get this on air is because it is so relevant to our area. Lots of tourists and cottage owners during the summer, plus, Wilberforce, Ontario(not too far from here and in our listening area has proclaimed itself the Geocaching Capital of Canada along with that whole area). I think it really relates back to many audience members who will hike and enjoy the outdoors already. Why not make it more exciting for them as it did for me.
  20. By the way, how do I find and talk to my regional reviewer? or do I have to setup the cache first?
  21. The part in the quote above will likely never fly without an exception by Groundspeak, because they have a very strict no-advertising policy regarding caches. If you want free advertising, then your best bet would be to purchse several travel-bug dog tags, attach them to station give-aways, and send them into the wild. Assuming you don't do the advertising bit, then I don't see anything else wrong with the concept of talking about geocaching on-air, even quoting logs. I would bet that as long as you don't publish names very few people will avoid the cache to avoid publicity. If they want to remain anonymous, they only have to sign their initials and the date. I imagine that some people would intentionally seek out the cache and write an extra-juicy log to get mentioned on-air. I should have explain that I didn't mean advertising in the commercial sense of the word. I meant, I'd make sure people were aware that what they wrote could be on the air. No one has to come into our office either or pay any fee. It's more just a way of getting the word out on geocaching for muggles if you know what I mean. If I can attract a few new members, I'll feel like I've done my job.
