  1. Lately my GPS V has been losing reception or sometimes giving me really bad data. It's had my minivan at speeds up to Mach 1.6! One second I'll have 10-12 satellites with WAAS and the next I've go nothing. Is this a bad unit, a bad antenna, or something else? I did add a power adapter fairly recently. Could it be interfering with receiving a signal?
  2. I would buy the 76. If you could install a Blue Chart, you would have one heck of a GPSR. Only problem is, I don't think they make a Blue Chart that includes the Marshalls. I know they have one for New Guinea and most of Indonesia. I think they also cover the Solomons. And do turn off the WAAS. Since there are only two WAAS stations in operation and both in North America, WAAS is going to be worse than useless in the Pacific. It also uses a lot more energy.

  4. It really depends on what type of area you are downloading. The greater Cincinnati area (inside the I-275 loop) without autorouting info take about 5mb. Other map zones without large cities may only take a 2mb even though they encompass an area many times larger than greater Cincinnati. It mainly depends on the amout of street, address and points of interest data that must be downloaded in the area. The only way to figure out how much you really need is to go into Metroguide and start clicking on the areas you want. Metroguide will tell you how much data it is. Also, if you don't have the newer Metroguide released in 2001, GET IT. The data is better and the download zones are smaller.
  5. quote:Originally posted by Gimpy:All depends on what you want to spend. I picked up my colormap for $280.00. The going rate for a StreetPilot III is around $680.00. For an extra $400.00, it better have lots of bells & whistles. I have the V with autorouting & just something about having a gpsr that talks to me that didn't do a thing for me. "Gimpy" I agree with Gimpy. While I think the SPIII is a great GPSR, its also a very expensive one. The next receiver I buy will be the Garmin GPS V. I think its by far the best GPSR for the money. I still wouldn't buy the colormap. Not when you can buy the GPS V for less.

  7. I think we're all assuming that you're talking about the StreetPilot III and not the Streetpilot Colormap. The Streetpilot III is great; I wouldn't waste my money on the Streetpilot Colormap. The Colormap doesn't offer autorouting. On the otherhand, the III not only offers autorouting, but gives turn-by-turn voice promts. And if you get off your route, the SP III will calculate a new route to get you where you're going. If you're going to get one, get the deluxe version. It comes with a 128mb datacard and full unlock and costs about an extra $110. The regular version comes with a 32mb data card and only one region unlocked.
  8. Ebay announced this morning that they will be acquiring Paypal. What does this mean exactly? I'm not sure but here is ebay's explanation. paypal acquisition
  9. I think if all other aspects are equal, I would buy the GPS V Deluxe in the hopes that it would have the most updated basemap. I don't know if the basemaps are different between the two products, but what the hey! Also, keep in mind that when Garmin updated the Metroguide CD, they were charging $100 to replace your old CD. They ended up only charging $48 after a couple of months.
  10. "CityNavigator and CitySelect are map systems using the MapSource software engine coupled to NavTech vector maps. NavTech has the most accurate road guidance maps we have seen and NavTech maps are used by almost all of the higher priced Car Navigation systems. (Such as VDO Dayton, Alpine, Philips Carin, etc.) Garmin's LATEST (June 2002) version 4.01 of CN (and the coming soon CS maps version) cover about the 120+ largest metro areas in the USA with full high detailed car navigation database information. The previous CN/CS version had sparse coverage in most rural areas BUT! New NavTech maps are now available and these (I will call CN-II and CS-II) new Garmin offerings have FULL USA ROAD COVERAGE just like MetroGuide. These new NavTech maps do NOT have complete POI and house numbering and etc in the RURAL areas just as MG-II does not. This improved coverage makes CN and CS much more desirable as a single solution map system as compared with the older CN and CS which had high detail road coverage ONLY in the 120+ largest metro areas."
  11. If you look at the differences between the Garmin GPS V and the Garmin GPS V Deluxe you'll find that they are the exact same product except that the deluxe version comes with full coverage and full unlock and costs about a $100 more. Otherwise, its the same exact product.
