  1. Keep in mind - The NGS has specific requirements on uploading photos. Stricter than GC here.
  2. Just like GC didn't update the database with new info from NGS, NGS does not have all the recovery info and pictures that have been posted here. Can't compare the two, sadly. Please note, if anyone submits information, to keep it professional, and only update it if it hasn't been in a year or more, OR, if something major has changed. No names, no funny stories. Those are used by professionals, and whatever you put in there is never deleted, never removed, and will be publicly available forever. I'll be removing the links to the GC site from my Android app and GE plugin then. They were useful before, with additional pictures and all, but if they're all gonna be wiped, there's absolutely no reason to link to GC anymore. Whatever this new project is, I won't even be interested. Frankly, if GC shows it 1/10th the love that it showed benchmarks in the last 22 years, the 'new project' will be gone in 5 years, and I don't have the time to set up a new API and program in new info trading for something that's not gonna last. Sadly, same here. I was a premium member for one time, and when BM code updates stopped happening, it wasn't worth it. I don't geocache, it bores me. (And the one time I DID? Someone stole the geocoin.) While the BM Forum has died down to a quiet whisper, I still checked it regularly, and enjoyed the talk and banter. Disappointed, but not surprised that it was going to happen, just am that it happening this soon. [Edited by Moderator to remove potty language.]
  3. Because I was asked for clarification - I'll state that I'm expecting to pay something for the software. NOT looking to pirate anything. (Even 16, 17 year old software..) Heh!
  4. Hey guys - Probably a long shot by now, but if anyone here has a stash of old disks, I'm looking for XMap 7 or 8, Topo10, and/or 3DTQ disks you may have lying around. Willing to buy them used, assuming the disks are readable. Was a beta-tester for the PN-series devices over ten years ago, and had (almost literally) everything. Years have passed, and my disks have either vanished into the ether, got damaged, or ended up missing. Thanks! -Mike
  5. Good to see you around! ArcGIS has the Historical Topos as an available map service layer. While I've only messed with Google earth and the Maps API in Android, I would not be surprised if there's an available library to utilize ArcGIS services in a Maps JS installation.
  6. Good to see. Interestingly, the main index file has some states marked as "incomplete", both under half and over half done. I wonder if this means they are still working on scanning them? Or was whoever doing this just ran out of time/desire and decided to stop where they were? With the statement at the bottom of that intro document, I wonder how posiible it would be to get records from the Denver office and just take everything over to Kinkos to scan up..
  7. It *IS* technically a marker - not all survey points have names stamped on them. However, just because it is a survey point does not mean it's in the NGS (and therefore, GC's) database. See here: Specifically, @Z15 's message.
  8. The oldest NON-INTERSECTON station in the database appears to be PID JU3849 - BOUNDARY ARC STONE 5 DE MD Set in 1765, the description: JU3849'DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1961 (RWT) JU3849'THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 2.5 MILES SOUTHWEST OF NEWARK, JU3849'DELAWARE, 2.0 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF ELK MILLS, MARYLAND, ON JU3849'PROPERTY OF E.I. 9. Actually, yeah. Heh. Yesterday, I was uploading images that were 4032x2268 (or 2268x4032, depending on orientation, of course). I store all my images in their native size, so I never did any processing here locally - letting the website handle resizing. Checked, and Wednesday (3/23), I uploaded a total of 45 images with a max size of 4032x4032 without issue.
  10. Just came here to see if anything was posted. Getting the same error, can't upload any images. (I have only tried to downsize to max 3096x3096, and still got error.)
  11. I am actually surprised you're asking this, because you're an old-timer! Yes, the NGS database only contains stations that have data that was submitted/blue-booked to the NGS. For example, USGS disks. not all were submitted or leveled to, so ones that weren't, won't be in the NGS online database.
  12. The term 'landmark' was not entirely wrong to use, as per several NGS documents, this one, from the bluebook (https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/FGCS/BlueBook/pdf/horizontal.pdf) spells it out nicely: Note (2) there.
  13. Regardless of the joke or not, his main point is still valid. A landmark station, if moved, is technically destroyed. And people logging it as 'good' are 'in err'.
  14. This article reminded me of the time I stopped by the NGS Training Center down in Virginia, near Fredericksburg. Was a really neat place, seeing all the monuments and test GPS antennas out there and set up.
  15. I noticed my NGS->GPX program was crashing when I was reading a file. Couldn't figure out why, and after some trial and error, was able to find the datasheet that was causing it: 1 National Geodetic Survey, Retrieval Date = DECEMBER 21, 2021 AA5248 *********************************************************************** AA5248 DESIGNATION - CABABI RESET AA5248 PID - AA5248 AA5248 STATE/COUNTY- AZ/PIMA AA5248 COUNTRY - US AA5248 USGS QUAD - AA5248 AA5248 *CURRENT SURVEY CONTROL AA5248 ______________________________________________________________________ AA5248* NAD 83(1986) POSITION- ( ) ( ) SCALED AA5248 ______________________________________________________________________ AA5248 AA5248.The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a map and have AA5248.an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds. The 'Current Survey Control' is... well, completely blank. I love it. It does make me wonder though, why have an entry in the database when there's absolutely no location information? Not even scaled?
  16. Likely it went away because the USGS stopped serving Topo on their own servers, and now it's being hosted by ArcGIS, which requres a lot of different dev and licensing work done. Hence, why it's gone. Note: This is all guessing; since I had to go through the same thing.
  17. Hey guys - Long necro-thread, but I thought this was important enough to post: The Earth KML uses my server and my copy of the database, to help speed up querying of the stations. Up until now, there was no regular updates performed on the DB - it happened once a year at *most*. However, starting earlier this fall, the DB is now getting updated monthly, whenever a new state archive is produced by the NGS. So, you'll now be looking at pretty-much live data. To top it off, the USGS topo overlay WILL be returning, though it WILL require a new KML to be downloaded. I will post here once that's ready.
  18. Fantastic! Very awesome! I sadly can't even test and play with it; no Apple device. But yeah - This was my biggest issue - I know iFolks want to use it, but with two development jobs and a contracting signal job, my time was (still is) too thin to be able to put that effort in. I know the USGS team out of Florida may start using your app - last year apparently they had all switched to iPhones, and sent me a message asking if they could access my app on their phones. Sadly, I told them it wasn't possible. Congrats, and look forward to now having a 'feature race' with you. Muhaha!
  19. Ah, good to hear! .. Now I just need a GPS.
  20. Okay, that's pretty cool! Hope you're doing well, Dave! Still see (DRD) initials in some of my datasheets.
  21. Huh, I forgot I had started this thread! So, dev work on NGS-GPX v3 is no more - v2, while not perfect it does about everything that's needed. Instead, I've been focusing on a rewrite of Benchmap, to make the app more usable out in the field and add some features that the current version can't handle.
  22. Just happened upon NGS's site today, and saw this banner image: Other than the interest in the changes to the OPUS and all, the first thing that caught my eye was the map - thinking, "Okay, how many of those have I recovered in the past? I believe maybe three.." Sadly, the image is just for design and appearance, clicking on the link returns no info on the project highlighted there, darnit.
  23. Okay, yeah, I misread your comment to infer that YOU updated something, which really, really threw me for a loop. There have been some changes in years past in the Datasheet program on how it interprets log entries for stations, which likely helped these stations get an accurate monumented date. (I only know this because one such update that was made back about a year ago) caused a whole bunch of logs that had no status, no agency, and no date appear tacked onto the history list on the datasheet. Had to talk to them and point out some stations that were causing this.
