  3. Fact:

    The Wild Blueberry

Nova Scotia's blueberries reach a global audience.

They are sold in more than 20 countries around the world, making a great contribution to our economy.

The wild blueberry is grown in five regions in Canada, and Nova Scotia is the largest producer in the country.

On January 11, 1996, the wild blueberry was officially declared the Provincial Berry of Nova Scotia.

    Joke:

    Knock, knock.

    Who's there?

    Andy.

    Andy who?

And he bit me again. OUCH! :D

  4. Fact:

    Stilbite

Stilbite was declared the provincial mineral in November 1999.

Stilbite is a variety of zeolite, mined mainly on the west coast of North America.

Nova Scotia has an abundance of the mineral, found in the Annapolis Valley region along the Bay of Fundy.

The mineral is composed of silica, sodium, potassium, aluminum and other elements.

Although it appears solid, it is actually a small honeycomb of pores.

Zeolites, including stilbite, can absorb up to 30 per cent of their dry weight in gasses and 90 per cent in hydrocarbons.

This allows the mineral to be used in oil spill clean-ups and in other industrial processes because of its ability to absorb odour and suppressants.

Another capability of stilbite is the ability to attract calcium and magnesium so that it can be used in water softening.

    Joke:

    Knock, knock

    Who's there?

    Madam

    Madam who?

Madam foot is caught in the door

P.S. The kids like it it is on the edge for them

Joke (Just in case that was iffy):

    Knock, knock.

    Who's there?

    Hawaii.

    Hawaii who?

    I'm fine, Hawaii you? :)

  5. Fact:

    Agate

Agate is the official gemstone emblem of Nova Scotia. It was adopted in November 1999.

Native cultures used agate as a tool more than 10,000 years ago.

Today, it is used primarily for decorative jewellery or ornaments.

Agate is a type of quartz that is resistant to erosion. It possesses a variety of colours and forms.

Agate is also the birthstone for May, corresponding with the province's official flower, the mayflower.

    Joke:

    Knock, knock.

    Who's there?

    Banana.

    Banana who?

    Knock, knock.

    Who's there?

    Banana.

    Banana who?

    Knock knock.

    Who's there?

    Orange.

    Orange who?

Orange you glad I didn't say banana?

  6. Fact:

    Geography

Nova Scotia is 55,000 square kilometres in size.

The province of Nova Scotia is connected to the province of New Brunswick and the rest of Canada, by the 28 kilometre Isthmus of Chignecto.

The Canso Causeway joins Cape Breton Island with mainland Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia’s coastline, if you stretched it out as far as it would go, is 7,400 kilometres in length. But the overall length of the province is actually only 575 kilometres.

The average width is 130 kilometres.

The highest point in Nova Scotia is at White Hill Lake in Victoria County, and is part of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It stands 530 metres above sea level.

The major rivers of Nova Scotia are the Annapolis, St. Mary’s, Medway, Mersey, Shubenacadie and Margaree. Shubenacadie is actually the longest river!

The largest lake in Nova Scotia is the Bras d’Or Lake in Cape Breton.

    Joke:

    Knock, knock

    Who's there?

    Police

    Police who?

Police let us in; it's cold out here.

  7. Fact:

    Climate

Nova Scotia’s daily temperatures vary, depending on the season.

    The averages are:

    Spring from 2° to 9° C

    Summer from 16° to 24° C

    Fall about 18° C

    Winter about -3° C

In Nova Scotia all types of weather are seen, including rain, snow, hail and their specialty...freezing rain.

On an annual basis Nova Scotia receives an average of 1,178.1 millimetres of rainfall (a little less inland).

    Joke:

    Knock, Knock.

    Who's there?

    Police.

    Police who?

Police stop telling these awful knock, knock jokes!
