  1. Thanks for putting this info together - this is a great idea!
  2. Hi - I just sent you an email. I was just there w/Cyberbunny (another cacher) - we went to Boca for a meeting tonight and we took 2 or 3 pics (in the dark) of the most interesting thing we came across at those coords - the world headquarters for Levenger....if you are a reader or a pen collector, you might know of them....www.levenger.com is their website. There may be something more interesting over on the Ft. Myers side....I will email you the pics so you can see what we've got. It was fun! Hope this works OK!!! Ultimamind aka Krista
  3. Oh, I guess I should note that the xx's are meant to indicate that I can use any coord there....per the Where's in a Name instructions. I will hit one or the other on Saturday, and hopefully upload a pic to you by Sunday (unless Doc-Dean just can't help himself over there in Ft. Myers, then it's may the best location win, hehheh).
  4. OK - I checked this out, and it looks to be right near Delray Beach...(which is indeed just north of Boca Raton). I will be in Boca on Saturday morning, and would be happy to snap a pic someplace interesting...not sure yet what's there that's interesting, but I'll try. Actually, the world headquarters for Office Depot is near there....hmmmmm...maybe it will be near those coords. Anyway, could you do me a favor and make sure i am converting these correctly? I am not mathematically inclined (took Symbolic logic in college in lieu of any higher math, thanks), and therefore have no clue how to correctly make DD MM.mmmm from scratch.....so.....does this look right to you? 26 27.8xx 080 05.24x? 26 27.8xx 080 04.102? (this is the one I have my doubts about.... ) Thanks - Ultimamind
  5. Hi - I am just north of Boca - I will check out the coords tonight when I get home....if Doc-Dean hasn't already been there, done that over in Ft. Myers..... Krista aka Ultimamind

Kinda makes you wistful for a state the size of Connecticut, doesn't it? All jokes aside, it is pretty great to be a Fla cacher, only because there is sooooo much to see here. I've cached the south end and by Lake Okeechobee, and now one on the west coast(so far), but I can imagine that the further north you go the more interesting the landscape is.
  7. Yeh, that kooky Flagler and his railroad...I guess he was on to something.
  8. quote:Unless it's the University of South Florida, which is really Tampa. LMAO - you are correct...how DID Tampa get to be South Florida, anyway? Thanks for the clarification - keep up the good work on the site!
  9. Ah, well, maybe I will think of this next year...note to self! Hope you had a great time at the hunt. I did....but no chance whatsoever in winning. Can I just say, Zooz did me in. If you were at the hunt, you know exactly what I'm talking about. I feel pretty dang good that I solved as many as I did. But, had my daughter with me, and she was constantly distracted by the flea market items on Lincoln Road Mall. And I did get interviewed for the Herald by a very cute reporter so all in all, a very successful day!
  10. quote:Originally posted by CacheMonkeez:Aren't you in South Florida? Yes, but not Miami - the thread on the message board area of the site had said "Miami - Southeast Florida." There are a lot of us in Broward, Palm Beach, and even up into Martin county. I'm about 80 miles away from Miami city limits. (Ironically, I lived in Miami for like 6 or 7 years!) My point - I guess - is that there's a lot going on inbetween the major metropolitan areas. It's not just down in South Florida - there's a lot in the middle of the state too. Just wondering if there's going to be something on either the main page of the site or in the forums to accommodate those areas? Like breaking up the state into regions - with the major metro city for each region listed or something. I was just being a little cheeky! I think the site looks awesome - and I really think those who put it up deserve a lot of credit.
  11. I'll be in Ft. Myers the week of Nov. 3...if no one has picked up your bug by then (and time permits) (and of course I locate the cache), I'll pick 'em up and bring 'em over to the east coast. Always up for a challenge!
  12. Although I've never seen this - it looks like they are essentially stolen (bug-napped?) and a note is left behind saying that they've been exterminated. I've heard some talk of catching the person and blocking them from the website or something, but I am sure they would just create a new login, even if you do catch them. The safe house is the best idea - as only the owner and whoever needs to visit it will have the coords. I think it's beyond crappy - really, really shi**y....especially when you know some of those bugs are sent out by kids and classrooms and so on. My only satisfying thought is - look out for that karma wheel, cause it's spinning around and it's gonna hit those exterminators in the behind!

What do you mean make a cache in Florida? Are you trying to get your TB from AK to FL? Where in FL? I am there....curiouser and curiouser.
  14. Hey Nickie - I'm going to the Herald Hunt next Sunday - this is my 4th time. The past hunts I've been to were in Hollywood, Bayfront Park & Coconut Grove. Don't ask me what years, though...I didn't keep track of that. Never even come close to winning, but I always have a ton of fun. Maybe a geocache meet-up prior to the hunt would make for a fun event...we all know cachers are far more mentally superior than those run-of-the-mill Herald Hunters. Does that sound like a good idea? It's only a week away, though...might be kind of last minute for some.
  15. Thnx for taking the time to put this site together! Looks pretty great. ALTHOUGH - those of us in Palm Beach/Treasure Coast would like our own thread on the bb. Great site - thanks again!
  16. I found my first cache on 8/30/03, and I've found 15 so far...that puts me at .44 per day....right? Now that's really a microcache...at this rate I'll have found only 175 caches by this time next year....that seems low to me...better get a move on....I need to stop reading the forums and get outside!
  17. Do you give yourselves any credit for caches not found? Even though, dang it, you looked and looked and looked? I think that deserves some kind of factoring into the geo-equation. Like grading on the curve....
  18. What a diverse bunch of fabulous people we are! My love is writing - I do a quarterly newsletter for an animal rescue group grant writing and other assorted fiction writing related nonsense. Gotta pay the bills, though (all of them? waaahhh!) so I work FT for the great (nearly broke) State of Florida as a computer trainer for the local state attorney's office. Also have this bizarre urge to do community theater and stand-up comedy *more like a sickness, really*....I do that every once in a blue moon (kinda like a werewolf that way....) I'm caching when the weather's halfway decent. Writing when it's not - or when it's dark. I usually have to go caching alone (nobody gets it). Although both my mother and my daughter have gone with me in the past. So, I get the heebie-jeebies sometimes when I'm in a remote place and there's gators or freak-o's nearby...Can't imagine going in the dark! Brrrrr..I bring pepper spray (too chicken for a gun, 'fraid I'd shoot myself in foot or GPSr).
  19. I guess any TB passing thru where there are these exterminators lurking is a bad idea...but with the safe houses and the law on our side (LOVE that motto of the Altheometrists police bugs: "THE ONLY LAW RIGHT OF THE DECIMAL POINT!" Hysterical!). If you know there's an exterminator in your area - be careful w/your bugs. And RESCUE those that have been placed nearby and might be in mortal danger!!!! Somebody help out Barbrady Unit 1...I'm worried about him! He needs BACKUP!!! The way I see it, any bug that makes it to his goal is a lucky bug....I personally held on to my first (and so far only bug) for a little longer than I had intended because the caches that I visited were not exactly in great shape. I waited till I found a nice, dry well hidden one before leaving the bug. Just seemed like the right thing to do...
  20. Thanks you guys, for posting the link to that cache...I don't know if bugs have disappeared further into South Florida (where I'm at). They probably don't make it past Gainesville! Maybe I should create a safe house down this way, if need be....or at least a TB hotel near the airport.
  21. Did you see the cache for the Gainesville TB Safe House? I laughed when I first saw it, but now I see you all really need it up there! Email the Federation for the coords. I don't have time to look for the cache # right now - daughter is begging for the computer now - sorry! But if you're in Gainsville, no doubt you'll see it in or near your zip code.
  22. I'm starting to get a little nervous about sending a defenseless little bug out there into the wild...yikes! I think when I release my bug (as yet undetermined, I just got my tags in the mail yesterday!) I will do the following: 1) Place the poor thing in a ziploc - I've only hit 15 caches, but more than half of them were damp, soggy, or just plain waterlogged. That equals a smelly, moldy death for plushie TBs. Unless it's in an ammo can, it's likely to get wet... 2) Maybe put (laminated?) instructions with it - where it's trying to go, what you need to do to log it as taken, and then place it again, and finally a little nicety note about how long to hang on to the bug...and that if it's been out of commission for a while, they can expect and email from me. I'm sure some people have done this w/their bugs before - I'd be curious to know if it helped....
  23. I'm at N 26 41.94. Sounds like it could be in prime caching territory to the north of me. I was going to go to Orlando in the next 2 weeks (yep, just to do some caching and orienteering). Sounds not too far from there. I'll check it out if you still need help. Let me know....
  24. Oooh, this sounds like a cool cache. I'm willing to go on a weekend and check it out. It's not too far for me to the Keys - maybe 2.5 hours to Key Largo and another hour to Marathon (which is in the middle). It's a great place for boating and snorkeling - and I haven't been since April. What a good excuse to go! I have 3-day weekends this weekend and next, so I'd love to head down there and help out a fellow cacher along the way. Eireann - did you hear from this guy yet? Is he still in need of help? Are you able to go? I'll await word...but it sounds fun.
  25. One more thing that bites - and HURTS - FIRE ANTS Have you encountered any of these? Mounds are usually built above ground, sometimes they are large, other times you don't notice them. These critters are everywhere in SoFLa, and they will bite you if you step into their turf. They're tiny, reddish-brown fat ants...those who are highly allergic watch out. I get a nasty reaction from these, and have to take benedryl if bitten even once or twice. Some may experience anaphylactic shock (sp?) if you're allergic to stinging insects. Bring epipen if you're one of those folks....seriously. Can cause severe reactions in some, nothing more than an itchy spot in others. If you don't know how you'll react, err on the side of caution and bring benedryl at least. Krista
