  1. Yay, geocheck somehow miraculously starting working this morning (September 24, 2013). I have no idea what happened but happy this is back up and running.
  2. Consider the Aiea Loop Trail on Oahu. It starts in the hills above Pearl Harbor in a great park. The loop consists of a trail up one ridge line at an easy uphill angle to a spot overlooking a freeway to the Windward side. The trail then bends to the left and back along another ridge line and back to the starting point. Along the way there are 10 plus caches that include GC23, one of the oldest caches in existence. If you do the whole trail, figure on about 4 hours to complete the loop. If you just go for GC23 you will only need about one hour. The fun of this cache is figuring out the instruction on the cache page. It says not to go uphill to get this cache. This seems not to make any sense until... well that's another story. Another attraction of doing the whole loop are the remnants of an old WWII plane that crashed in this area many years ago. Tropical forests give shade and there are a few spots where there are benches to stop, rest have a drink and take in wonderful views.
  3. I have a third party doodad that attaches a two-line display to the OBDII port under the dash. It reads out a slightly different speed than my analog dashboard speedometer. For example, I have to go well over 65 on the dashboard speedo for the OBDII device to show 65. My GPSrs match the ODBII device pretty closely. Check it the old school way, BGPS (Before GPS). I used to do it all the time to save myself from speeding tickets. Go out onto a relatively light traffic freeway that is fairly level and which has milepost signs. Set your speed at 60 mph exactly on your speedo and lock in your Cruise Control. Then using a stop watch, time a 5 mile stretch where nothing eventful happened with your speed. If your speedo is correct it will take exactly 60 seconds for one mile or 300 seconds for 5 miles. If it takes 315 seconds, figure the speedometer is 15 seconds slow, so is 5% off. YMMV
  4. At the risk of stating the obvious, could these parents be afraid because you are a Drooling Mongoloid?
  5. This is a great idea for a product. What about those webcams that have a time delay of several minutes. More than once I have waited on the phone for my friend to say "Not yet, not yet" and then finally after several minutes "Are you wearing a green shirt and blue jeans?" If your product would record multiple images over "x" minutes and send them along that might solve that problem. Thanks
  6. Looks like today he found over 20 caches in the beautiful and historic Cape Hatteras / Kitty Hawk area. It would be a real shame if he was doing all these from his armchair. I would love to have done these today.
  7. It looks like this guy is trying to make some kind of point. He knows a fair bit about geocaching. He plans a fairly logical route, picks mostly easy caches and then leaves town. He is cheeky too as he has a webcam cache where he posts immediately after Moun10Bike. He doesn't post the pic but leads you to believe he is in the same photo as him as others have done. Since yesterday he has 60 more finds. I wonder where this is going?
  8. This is a true story. Last weekend my buddy and I are on our way to find a cache in a local park. I am driving through a parking lot which means I am going 5 to 10 mph. We come upon a flock of pigeons which are pecking at things in the roadway. Like I have hundreds, no thousands of times before, lift my foot off the gas pedal slightly as the car head towards the flock. Hundreds, no thousands of times before the flock gets out of the way by walking or flying out of the way. For the first time in my life I ran over one of the pigeons killing it instantly. I felt huge remorse and told my friend. He opined that I should take a Darwinian perspective. He said that the pigeon that died was obviously not as smart as the rest of the flock and that I had helped the species become stronger by taking a less smart member out of the gene pool. He persuaded me further by saying that pigeons can only grow stronger and stronger over many generations by this process. I was comforted somewhat but that night I had an unbelievable nightmare. In my dream it was several thousand years in the future. One of my descendants is in a courtroom sitting in a defendants block. He is being questioned about running over birds in the local park. As he starts to explain Darwinian principles the judge interrupts. I woke up screaming just before the judge who is a pigeon speaks. And so now to Okiebryan... Bro, don't do it.
  9. One feature of the ski pole not mentioned are the straps at the top of the pole. Using them ski style you squeeze the grip with the straps in between. If your hand slips off the grip you still have control of the pole. When climbing you spread the weight transfer between the pole and your full wrist and hand through the straps. The only problem is my standard ski poles are too long for hiking so a shorter pair would be better. So there you go, better features and performance using ski poles for hiking. PS: I like the velcro idea using the pole as a monopod for cameras. I'm going to try that.
  10. I found a friend that had MetroGuide Europe for Garmin that I borrowed. It is not locked to a unique GPS and was ideal to make sure I wasn't lost. I wasn't driving so don't know if the navigation works or not but all the street detail is there.
  11. On one of my PCs, printing cache pages does not product difficulty values (eg 2/4). I have tried many different settings but still no ratings on the printed output. Any ideas?
  12. The top 10 reasons why DogBreathCanada will not be a Director of BCGA 10. No one will sponsor his membership application 9. he has DNF'd too many Difficulty 1 caches 8. he singlehandedly started the parking lot cache trend 7. he takes his dog on very tough mountain climbs (PETA please note) 6. confused "hitchhiker" with someone who solicits free rides 5. never been to a National Park 4. thinks SBA (Should Be Archived) should be used if you can't find a cache 3. after 5 successful finds of Skytrain final and his single DNF, he suggests hint changes to cache owner 2. has never read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" 1. he has dog breath
  13. It looks like Global TV News will be covering Novice Night on August 18. If you haven't signed in yet to attend, you will not be eligible for any of our fine prizes. Do you have any good stories about geocaching that we can consider using in some way? Bear in mind that we may give them 20 good stories and they may end up using one. Also, if there is a four alarm fire that night, they may become diverted. To start with, does any member know of younger kids that are expert in using a GPS and have an interesting story? Please reply by PM or on this forum. Any other interesting ideas are welcome. geodug
  14. It's now official Novice Night - Vancouver is ready to roll. The Event Cache webpage has now been posted on geocaching.com http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...6b-42e85de8923c Tell your friends, tell your neighbours to come out for a fun night. We have a number of volunteers that will be helping out by leading the event, providing demos, placing caches, donating prizes etc.. We will be in touch with them shortly to coordinate what should be a very exciting evening for novices. The evening will be led by BC Eagle and Half-Canadian. Depending on turnout, we may need more leaders. If any other members are interested in helping, please get in touch with CanadianBacon or myself. Thanks to all who have helped out so far geodug
  15. Novice Night - Vancouver We are getting some good interest from the community now for this project. There is still the possibility of combining it with our summer "Cache Back" project. The details are still being sorted out. We hope to have 3 or 4 caches close together with a good variety of geocache challenges for novices to hunt down.. It should be a lot of fun and educational too. Pass this along to anyone you know who may be interested. The more the merrier. We look forward to seeing many of you in the Vancouver area. For more information go to: http://www.bcgeocaching.com/modules.php?na...pic&p=4264#4264
  16. Novice Night - Vancouver To all BC geocachers and visitors to BC. We are generating some interest for this fun event from participants and group leaders. If you are a newer geocacher this is the event for you to learn the sport from expert leaders. We are maybe combining it with our "Cache Back" event. This event is a picnic style get together for returning missing cache items that have recently been returned to us. The date and place has not yet been confirmed so if you are interested please check in at: http://www.bcgeocaching.com/modules.php?na...pic&p=4264#4264 This should be a fun summertime event and anyone in BC at the time should confirm once we get the details settled.
  17. Novice Night - Vancouver New to geocaching or just visiting Vancouver? The BC Geocaching Association would like to promote the great sport of geocaching. Sometime in the next 10 days to 2 weeks, we would like to consider holding a Novice Night for the benefit of new or newer cachers to learn about geocaching. Attendees would learn how to use their GPSr, and general techniques to find a cache. Some variety in types of hide and terrain would be useful. How to handle "muggles" may help geocachers to have fewer lost caches caused by muggle curiosity. The approach to the environment, safety and CITO topics would be discussed. If this event is successful, we would encourage Novice Nights anywhere else in BC, also led by volunteer members. The evening would: a. Look for 2 to 3 existing caches in Burnaby or Surrey b. Evening to be led by 2 volunteer members c. Start about 7:00 PM d. Take as many cars as needed e. Novices to bring own GPS f. We provide no food, no drink, no charge Please give us your thoughts on this idea. If you would like to volunteer to lead the group, let us know on the forum or by PM. If you are new to geocaching and would like to spend a couple of hours seeing what we do in BC please let us know. If you are visiting Vancouver and would like to join in, you are also welcome. The main discussion will be on the BC Geocaching Association website: http://www.bcgeocaching.com/modules.php?na...pic&p=4264#4264 Thanks, geodug
  18. I have to reply to Canadazuuk's latest post. My caching name is geodug and I offered my name as a Director of BC Geocaching Association when I saw the poisoned atmosphere that exists in BC. I see by the posts that there are geocachers posting here that have become disillusioned because of it. I suspected that there were people that feel this way, I don't know how many. We don't blame you one bit, but we do want you back. We hope we can win the election and be able to put our programs into effect that will be inclusive of all and encourage participation from each corner of the province. If we are elected, just watch us, and if you believe we are doing a good job tell us. If not, we want you to tell us as well. The Association is owned by its members. We are working for the members and will always do so. Finally, it will be the members that elect its officers. As of today, our group have announced 5 candidates for consideration. Separately, another member has announced his candidacy. I emailed my good luck wishes to the independent candidate last night. That means there are 6 persons for the members to vote for. The election is tonight. This is the democratic way and this is the way it should be. geodug
  19. Hi Jeremy, I just tried it but had a three word caption and it worked. The earlier caption had 30 characters. But before, i could have a caption and a description and it was OK. I take it from your last note that everything is back to normal? Thanks... geodug
  20. I am not able to upload images starting tonight, May 11, 2004. I am getting what I believe is a SQL Server error message like: "Length of text, ntext, or image data (x) to be replicated exceeds configured maximum 65536" I tried varying the image size from the posted max of 125 KB all the way down to 40 KB but the same message is returned. Any changes re: uploading images or just a glitch? TIA... geodug
