  1. If rural areas to be visited by the OP include mountainous view sites with no space to pace back and forth, a properly functioning built in magnetic compass display with Topo maps can be very useful. Whether a typical Etrex 30 provides this capability, with or without extra cost maps, I do not know.
  2. Following my latest Java upgrade a couple of days ago, Oracle posted a notice stating that Java was not supported in the new Microsoft Edge browser and suggested trying MS Internet Explorer or perhaps another browser or two. Note that MS Internet Explorer 11 may be downloaded as part of the free Windows 10 upgrade package, along with Edge. I now have both IE 11 and Edge on the Windows 10 upgrade, but have never used a browser other than those supplied by MS and have never downloaded Caches from Groundspeak with a plugin. I did have a Premium membership for a year just to see how the Pocket Query zipped download worked (just fine) even though I do not actively search for hidden Geocaches.
  3. Here is a link to a four slot micro SD card writer/reader that might speed up Grasscatcher's suggestion. Due to Map file and other potential issues of replacing existing mSD cards, pulling existing cards for combo gpx file transfer might be preferable. Delorme PN-60 handheld gps devices can also read from SD cards containing Garmin Combo "Current" track and waypoint gpx files, at least from newer Nuvis. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820192030
  4. In my experience, new factory pre-charged Eneloop cells fresh out of the package tend to have less than a full charge. Perhaps the device pre-charged NiMH setting is to be used only once when the cells are new.
  5. Disclaimer: I do not own a handheld Garmin gps device capable of automatic direct routing to a waypoint (geocache), but in following these forum threads I have speculated that when at least some of these devices perceive that they are within a radius of 30-60 feet or so of ground zero they lock down temporarily to keep the user from spinning in circles. Therefore it may be necessary to walk away from perceived ground zero a certain minimum distance to reset the device and start over with a new course to the target. I have observed similar operation with some firmware versions of the Delorme PN-40/60 devices, but the programmed "circle of confusion" reset distance may be smaller. The electronic compass, if recently calibrated, does help. Edit: On the Delorme devices, both default automatic recalculation and electronic compass should be enabled and the user should be walking slower than 1.5 mph to use the electronic compass. If walking faster than 1.5 mph in a line deliberately tangential to the waypoint, the Direction needle should still swing towards the target within one second of reaching a tangential line location perpendicular to the target coordinates. These comments are about best case test conditions on a clear day in an open field with good satellite reception. If geocaching in cloudy, brushy, tree covered, or canyon areas - urban or rural - results may not be so straightforward. My total number of geocaches found: approximately zero.
  6. FWIW the Delorme PN-60 has an option to Restore Factory Settings at the bottom of the main Settings menu. Using this restore function will erase active data in non-volatile memory, but may also eliminate some of your freezing issues. Note that freezing can be caused by running primary Lithium AA cells down below their rated voltage range by setting the battery type incorrectly. The latest PN-60 3.6 firmware upgrade can also correct some prior minor issues. As to loading maps being difficult, the device SDHC card does support at least 22GB of bundled maps without issue in my experience. A fully loaded 32GB SDHC card can admittedly be problematic for POI searching, road routing, and perhaps geocaching, but not just viewing maps however. Good luck with your geocaching.
  7. Although I did not use geocaching plugins, I did run into similar browser plugin deprecation issues yesterday trying to get Netflix working on a Windows 10 upgraded laptop. The convoluted story I finally put together was that MS Silverlight is not supported in Windows 10's Edge Browser, but Silverlight plugins may still work if one reverts to Internet Explorer 11. (But not necessarily for Netflix on a marginal Win 10 laptop on a marginal DSL connection).
  8. Check the battery type settings, as the shutdown voltage may be set for a different chemistry.
  9. My latest gadget for use with several small portable electronic devices is an Anker Astro E3 External Battery with 2 USB 5vdc output ports. This rechargeable battery pack contains 10,000 mAH of lithium something or other energy, but the voltage at which the amp hour run time is calculated is not specified in the advertising. The fine print in the included user booklet does indicate average of 10AH at regulated 5vdc at various loads. As to internal loose AA cells, perhaps rechargeable, but not recharged within the device, you can't go wrong purchasing new Panasonic Eneloop brand AA cells bundled with a mains charger. Four of these externally rechargeable NiMH AA cells, rated at 1900 mAH @1.2v each, will last most geocachers for at least one full day of use. Edited to correct claimed amp-hour output of Anker External Battery: 10AH @ regulated 5v
  10. If you are not going to get out of the car, any compatible up to date street map is likely to route you to within a few miles of your off road adventures. Such a map may or may not include a routable trace for even the Appalachian Trail, but that is primarily to keep you from routing your car on it. I don't have any Garmin handheld gps devices, as I use the Delorme PN-40/60 models with bundled Topo maps, but can someone clarify for me how the Garmin 64s, for instance, handles off road trail routing? Do you only have two options, other than direct point to point, with the Garmin handhelds?: 1) Following automobile roads 2) Following (including backtracking) pre-recorded gps track logs Thanks Edit: It looks like wfalzon answered the question while I was making comparisons of maps from computer and an automobile routing device. If I understand the procedure above, he is giving directions on re-joining the trail line segments to create long Garmin track logs. On the other hand, Delorme Trail Layer vector line users, and some others, may need to break long track logs into segments no longer than 10 miles in length to make the trail routing algorithm work.
  11. Download a user manual from Garmin and then search for Elevation or Calibrate in Adobe pdf Reader.
  12. Both the PN-40 and PN-60 support 32GB SDHC cards of the speed classes 4-10. The PN-60 supports Waypoint/Geocache file access on both internal (3.5+GB) memory and on the SD card memory, if installed. The PN-40 supports Waypoint/Geocache file access only on the SD card, and not on internal memory. The waypoint (geocache) file transfer management of both devices is supported in gpx format on both devices with latest firmware. Older PN-40 devices required massaging Geocache files through Delorme Topo 8 software or by a now deprecated browser plugin for proprietary delbin format files.
  13. Over the years, some Garmin Handheld GPS users have reported electronic compass drift that corresponds to unregulated battery voltage decline.
  14. I needed to read the OP three times before noticing that the "download" was from the GSAK 3rd party geocache app, and not Groundspeak. Some Delorme PN-60 users do report unexplained issues with GSAK file filtering on the Delorme forums from time to time. It is my understanding that the PN-60 uses Waypoint Symbol name types (text), not the Delorme Waypoint/Geocache name field as the primary filter for separating Closed Chest geocache points from plain old waypoints. But a solution might be as simple as creating a Geocache folder in addition to the Waypoint folder on the SD card.
  15. @camper248 There is a reset option in PN-60 user System menu, but it may delete more data from internal memory than you desire. All activity profile settings may be set back to default as well. You may want to try again to delete all route files from internal memory, as entering support mode is not as risky as it seems at first glance. Users on the Delorme forum will walk you through it, if you want greater detail, but some will probably suggest a "low level format". The low level format is not required for the issue you reported in my experience, but deletion of all existing routes usually is required to get all geocaching functions routing bells and whistles working properly again. Disclaimer: If you look at my profile on this site, you will see that I have no official cache finds.
  16. This symptom likely indicates that route files in the PN-60 internal memory are corrupted. Enter support mode to delete all routes. (Hold down Page+Menu+Power buttons at startup to enter support mode. Then carefully use menus to delete only routes.)
  17. The only Ni-MH chargers I have used for the last 7 years or so are 4xAA/4xAAA chargers bundled with Eneloops and similar cells. Some of the 7 year old Eneloop branded cells are still serviceable. The latest 2015 "charger in bundled Panasonic-Eneloop packaging" is a Panasonic Branded Model BQ-CC17 with a stated individual AA cell charge rate of 0.30A @ 1.5v. Over the years, all of these bundled NiMH chargers have had similar ratings and similar several hour charge rates and tend to shut down at 1.49 volts according to my cheapo digital meters on the rare occasions when I checked. I have no experience with the "better" chargers.
  18. Is it possible to disable automatic route recalculation for both trails and streets with the Oregon 600? (Assuming in advance that both street and trail routing calculations are supported now). I did look at the User Manual download, but did not find any answers. Thanks.
  19. Just relax and be content with the cabin pressure staying at the "8000 foot" level.
  20. According to the Delorme PN Waypoint (Cache) Symbol pulldown menu in Topo Draw, the proper name for the smiley waypoint (cache point) in a gpx file is "Geocache Found". This name may be registered by Groundspeak and subject to a(n) EULA??
  21. Delorme PN-30/40 users who wish to participate in geocaching will need to download and install the 2.8 firmware, which is available at Delorme.com. Then it will be necessary to use Windows PC Explorer to copy unzipped PQ *.gpx files into a "Waypoint" folder on a user supplied SD card for mounting in the PN-30 or PN-40 device. The supplied proprietary USB cable may also be used for file transfer to an in device SD card. The original Delorme Topo8 application (bundled with the PN-30/40 devices with original 2.5/2.6 firmware) will be unusable for transferring geocaches in *.gpx format after the 2.8 firmware upgrade. **Edit: Contrary to the comment above, PN-30/40 devices with 2.8 firmware do not support Waypoints (including Geocache Symbolized points) in Internal EM_User memory. SD cards are required and a Waypoint folder must be created if it does not occur automatically. ***Edit Delorme PN-60 devices do support Waypoint folders in both EM_User memory and in SD cards.
  22. While replacing the battery cells with fully charged AA cells, make sure that the SDHC card is firmly seated and that the hinge on the SD card carrier has not popped out. If that does not fix the issue, then revisit your terminology of "send to GPS" and note any other issues in a follow-up post. Good luck.
  23. Today would have been a good time to brush up on air pressure inside airplane cabins, according the Sky West news out of Buffalo, NY.
  24. The current Nuvi 56 auto gps for Canada may give an error if one types in more than five decimal places, as the 6th decimal digit will replace the 5th. It would better to truncate the display on the map to no more than five digit characters following the dot.
