  1. It seems that it will only show those within a certain distance from your current location (default 2000 ft), and only if you set Proximity to Prompt or Alert. I have not experimented with setting the radius larger. Depending on your model of Nuvi, that may give some problems. It worked like a charm on my 650 and 660, but created some irritating behavior on the 2D map screen on my 755 (I can no longer touch a point on the 2D map screen and select that point - it will randomly pick one of the nearby POIs). I push mine to 3500 feet, but using a simple combine of GPX files, through EasyGPS, through the Garmin Custom POI loader. I pity the fool who stole my old NuVi 205.. unless they're <2 miles from my house, for a 200 mile radius, if they encounter a geocache, or child waypoint (parking, trailheads, etc.) it's going to keep going off like Big Ben! even over the voice.. And, the fun thing, it can't be erased or shut off unless they know how to get at the file. Doing what you say they can't do is a piece of cake if they know anything about geocaching & the likes, If they don't, Yeah, It be a pain on them for hearing the Alarm going off all the time getting near a cache that is loaded on it, But real simple for the most stupid to any one just by Muting the Sound/Voice We own a Nuvi 205, Pretty fast to figure the unit out
  2. Did you scroll through the list and look for "garmin-nuvi-exportgpx.gsk"? It doesn't always start at the top. Yes I did, I just couldn't find it as I did on mine.
  3. If your friend goes to Macro -> Run / Manage... and look at the list that pops up, does he see the macro? If you go to Tools -> Options, and look for "Application data", that's the directory you should find the Macros folder. That is where macros are stored. Well, He's not here with his Lap Top right now. But when I go on my GSAK & do the part "If your friend goes to Macro -> Run / Manage... and look at the list that pops up, does he see the macro?" I don't even see the Macro on mine & I already running this all from GSAK to load our Nuvi & 60CSx.
  4. A Garmin eTrex H is a pretty cheap way to go. You can find them for under $100 Brand New. It don't have all the Bells & Whistles to go total paperless, no maps, pretty basic, But it sure will put you on top of a cache you looking for. Much better than the high dollar units in our books. We own 2 of them, Plus we have a GPSmap 60CSx too & both of these little yellow GPSr's blow it out the water. Plus, You won't be out a crap load of $$ if you decide Geocaching isn't your bag
  5. We use our Nuvi 205 for the same thing, But if we going deep in the woods. We'll turned it off & pack it with us so if we can't find the cache or need a hint from other Found Logs or from the Hint it's self. We turn it on long enoght for them. Only Paperless way to go when on a fixed income
  6. Read the tutorial here : http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com/ Requires you to run GSAK, which is a Windows app. I have this on my Computer which has Windows Vista to load my Nuvi. But a friend of mine has Windows 7 & we tried setting it up so he could load his Nuvi 255w but when we got to the "Macro Button Configuration" part, Couldn't find the Macro File Name. He loaded the GSAK up to his computer his self. So I'm not sure where to start looking for what to put in that area or where to find it on the C Drive??
  7. I to used this loop & broke it. So I take it being broken doesn't hurt the performance of the Unit??
  8. Agreed. I'm thinking some similar artistry, with a quality container like a match safe or preform, and it would be great. We been making these since we started caching. We have used all of the above, plus using 35mm film cans & some other containers we are unsure of what they used for, but are very much water proof. We alway's put logs in Small Ziploc type baggies we get at Walmart in the Jeweling making Dept. even if the container is waterproof, log goes in a baggie.
  9. Would give us a more reason to pull our few Lamp Post Caches we have & other do the same then we would end the boring "This place just needed a cache" lamp post caches for good.
  10. I think that this was a bit of the reverse, however... this sounds more like the police, fire department, and bomb squad asking for an event to educate geocachers. It is still getting the two sides together, of course, but in a totally different relationship. From the logs: Very informative. Thanks Impressive demonstration and lecture . I/we enjoyed this very informative cache meet, being from the boon docks, I never thought about some one thinking a cache might be a boom. Thanks for all the info, we never gave this a thought. You know I never thought of these issues before but I will be aware now. Very nice presentation & lots of good information. I can honestly say I will not look at those ammo cans in the woods the same again. Well, He or She did ask "My question is: How do we engage the local public safety community to talk with geocachers?" So we just put in our 2 cents
  11. We believe that most cachers that don't replace a cache where they find it is the Number Getter's. They in to big of a hurry to grab, sign & get to the next cache. Then there is also the cachers that forget a pen or pencil (Remember when you get out to hunt, Grab your pen or Pencil first then the GPS'r) & when they do find the cache & notice they forgotten their pen or pencil they carry the cache back to their auto, sign the log & then by the time they get back to where it was hid, They done forgot where they found it, so they just place it where ever they see fit so they can get back to get them number builders. We have a name for these type of cachers D_ _ A_ _'s , Your won't find the cachers that are not scare to do some hiking to find a cache do this.
  12. A Louisville, Ky. geocaching group had a Event a month or so ago that involved the Police,Fire Dept. & not sure who else. The way I took it they was going to make people more aware of geocaching, Plus the Police was going to blow up a geocache container too. Maybe look back in some of the Louisville area Gecachers profiles & see if they attended this event & you could go in if it's archived now to see who put it on & get some Feed back from them. Hope this helps. I found the Event. Here it is. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...26-353563e5d54f

  14. Neither. I want a cache that is interesting. Bring me to a nice viewpoint, over interesting terrain, to a cool rock formation, an historic site, an oddity, and I'm happy. If it is challenging to get to, all the better, but I geocache for discovery not challenge. If I just want a challenge I'll take up rock climbing. I 2nd this
  15. Cool idea but isn't there a rule that says caches cannot simulate or be placed on electrical equipment? Can you provide a link to this rule? If there is a rule about this type of container or other hides in & around Electrical Boxes?? Then there is a crap load on CO's in our area in a heap of trouble,,lol
  16. Does the container set down inside some kind of pipe buried in the ground??
  17. Wasn't that container submitted to this thread or the other one a few weeks ago? There is one up in Il. from us that I believe is larger than this one in this photo. We have never went & found it yet. But was told it looks like a Giant 30Cal Ammo Can. I was also told what it was used for in the Armed Forces is that Army Cot's come in.
  18. We found one kind of like this here in our area, but was a larger log cut cross way's, It was then Hinged. They then took a chain saw to hollow out the larger end of the log to hold a 30cal ammo can in it. Was pretty kool hide. I bet we walked past it a few times before we found it,,lol
  19. Yeah, I have saw this same thing with caches we own. We go to the listing & it's there up & looking fine, But when we get a e mail letting us know someone found it, the subject line in the e mail reads "[LOG] Owner: John Doe found The Pines of Bethel Hill!! (Not Published) (Traditional Cache)‏" I added the John Doe. So what gives???
  20. Nearest Army type base to us here is well over 90 miles away. We can get 30cal ammo boxes for $4.95 at our local Surplus Store in Evansville. & I think the 50cal's are like $7 or $8. They are New & if not they sure in like new condition & are well sealed.
  21. Here in Kentucky or near & around where we live we can hide caches around Cemeteries as long as they are not hid on or around Headstones or the likes. So our caches are hid near the fence roll or in the woods nearby. We have put in the listings for these type of hides & some others that No Night Caching is allowed or they can't be hunted 24/7. Our question is. If a cacher does hunt these caches at nite & state it in their log's they found them at night. As a owner of said Cache/s do I have the right to delete their log as they are not hunting the cache by the rules we have set forth for that listing?? We don't want to be A Holes, But when cachers are getting stopped or asked why they their during the nite hours, It's giving the rest of us a Bad Name,,isn't it??
  22. There was a few folks that was at Moonshine that we didn't even get a chance to say hi to but we did meet a few cachers we had never met before (Need to start writing their names down,,lol). Saw your name on the attended log's & a few others that we sure like to have meet too. We kind of got lost heading there. Wasn't the Nuvi's fault, It was mine (Mr RKCF),,lol This was our 2nd time to moonshine & the road numbers was going up in number not down. It's long story,,lol Anyway's, Hope you get to come down for the Event. It's our first time giving one. So we are kind of excited. Got some Great give away's headed our way. We got more caches to hide down in Union county too, But we really getting into hiding caches now to bring ya to some type of History or to WOW cachers. i had the honor of meeting the reedkycache finders at the end of moonshine..I have never had the honor to cache in kentucky yet BUT i see the invitation is there..We might look hard at this event.. Hey there. Was you the ones I talked your head off out at our car's?? lol
