  1. Wow! Congratulations & welcome to the sport (addiction). Having fun is part of what life's all about. Keep a smile on your face & have a good time.
  2. Dan, the registration wasn't real obvious to me. Here's what I did: On your Palm choose cachemate/option/register to get to option on the palm you have to press cachemate again with the stylus. Then option & register. Use stylus to select at "enter code here" . In lower right corner select 123 to get the calculator to enter the reg #s or abc to enter alpha #s in the reg code. You can just print out the info for a few caches to get started caching with your friends. Go play & figure out how to do paperless after you get a few finds under your belt! Let us know if you need more help.
  3. Happy, there is a lot of info at http://gsak.net/. It has a getting started guide as well as a link to their support forum for GSAK. Are you doing pocket queries from GC.com that you want to load on the Garmin? GSAK will open the .zip file & gives you the option to sent to the Garmin under the menu item GPS/Send waypoints. Have you been successful in sending any waypoints to your GPS from mygarmin.com? You can send waypoints from there 1 at a time to make sure you have the USB setup correctly. Have fun & welcome to geocaching.
  4. A few choices here. Geocaching.com allows you to search by zipcode or city, state. I put in zip of 72701 & came up with 1149 caches. You'll have to figure out how to narrow the search from there. Do you have a Garmin? I went to mygarmin.com / my extras / go geocaching / get started / That gives you a map where you can put in city, zip code & drag map around to find the area you want. You can then choose to download just the geocaches you want to your GPS. Good luck. Give us more details if you need more help.
  5. Good luck. CBFlyfisher; Be Careful with a 12Volt Transformer to Charge a M505! The Transformer Needed to Charge an M505 or any other "M Series" Palm is a 5.0 VDC 1.0A . The 12 Volt my work for a Short Time, But WILL Ruin the Charging System, and Most likely the Palm as well! Ventureman, thanks for the warning. I had tried a transformer with 4.5, 6, 7.5 & 9 volt settings without any charge light. When I connected the 12V model the charge light came on & charged the Palm battery. Is the difference that the 12 volt is .75 amp & the lower voltage settings are with 300 mA? I now have the USB cable connector working. Maybe I should try using that to charge & transfer caches? Thanks again
  6. My Palm 505 uses a separate USB cable to charge or the cradle. When I purchased it on eBay the 12 volt adapter to plug into the cradle was missing so the cradle wouldn't charge the battery of the Palm. The separate usb cable wouldn't stay plugged in to the Palm so I was having a difficult time charging the battery. I found a 12 volt transformer to plug into the cradle so I'm fine now. Beware of cables, CD's with software & manuals included or missing. I paid $15 plus shipping but probably would have been better of paying $30 & getting all the stuff. Also, buying it from the original owner might be better as you're likely to get better info about the condition. Good luck.
  7. Well, apparently you've been a good teacher & have invited her along to enjoy the excitement of hidden treasure. Congrats on finding something you can enjoy together. PS: You may be pushed into upgrading your GPSr.
  8. How do you do either, sorry I'm very green. Welcome & come back if the following doesn't do what you're trying to accomplish. I have a GPSMAP76 so things should be close. Press find/ geocache/ select the name of the cache you've found or want to delete/ press enter/ press the cursor left to select delete & press enter. Your GPSr doesn't need to be connected to the PC at all.
  9. The "geocaching.loc" file is from the PQ preview page - which shows 20 caches per page and so the LOC file will only show those 20 caches. look throuWhat you need to do is load that PQ you got (and loaded into CacheMate) into EasyGPS. Then you can load all 500 caches into your GPSr. OK, that works just fine. One note about doing that: If your PQ included Mystery/Puzzle caches you will have a number of waypoints that lead nowhere. I'd recommend getting GSAK which allows you to filter/sort the caches, save corrected coordinates (for solve puzzle caches, etc.) and export to both GPSr and CacheMate (plus a whole lot more). I'll look through the caches to see what filters I used. This is only my 3rd attempt at a Pocket query. I probably want to refine the query anyway. I've resisted GSAK & the $$ fee thinking I may be able to use EasyGPS to do paperless. There is a trial period before the nags start so maybe I'll download & try. Thanks for the suggestion.
  10. Wow, you're right. I opened the .loc file & got the 20 records. I had EasyGPS open the zipped Pocket query I received via email & it has all of the caches. Now, I'll have to learn how to be more selective with my PQ as I probably don't want to flood my GPS with 500 caches/waypoints at once. Thanks, motorcycle mama. I appreciate your help.
  11. I have a Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx & a Palm 505. I signed up for a premium membership so I can do pocket queries. I downloaded Cachemate for my Palm to handle caches. I did a pocket query to download 500 caches in my area & used Cachemate’s cmconvert to put all of the Caches on my Palm. Now how do I get the same caches on my GPS? The pocket query (PQ) gives me the option to look at the results after it sends me the email with the file attached. When I try to download that it gives me a file named “geocaching.loc” – an EasyGPS format file. I downloaded EasyGPS & loaded the geocaching.loc file & tried to load the caches to my GPS. It only shows the first 20 & no more. Where are the other 480 caches? How do I get all of the same caches on my GPS that I have in the Palm 505? Any help would be appreciated.
  12. Hey Jeff, I didn't see the link to the webpage where you found the software. I recently purchased Garmin Bluechart v 9.5 on eBay for $99 + $6 shipping. That's the best price I could find. BlueChart Americas covers the US as well as other areas. You load the part you need onto your SD card or into memory on the GPS. Good luck.
  13. sma12, I have a GPSMAP 76CSx which I think is the same as yours for menus. If I do find/addresses it already knows I'm in Oregon so it doesn't bring up the field "enter region". My choices are enter City, number & street name. I have the same CNNA you do loaded on a 4GB card in its entirety. I've been looking through the book & all of my menus on the GPS & can't see how I told the gps I'm in Oregon. Is it when I registered the GPS? I'll look some more but can't see at the moment. Maybe this will help jog your thinking. I don't think it's how much you load on the card. Good luck.
  14. I have buddies who swear by the Garmin Rino GPS with 2 way radio. They use them while hunting as they can keep track of where everyone is on the mountain & use them to talk (whisper) to each other when game is spotted. I've never used one as I'm quite pleased with the Garmin GPSMAP 76 CSx I use while boating & for geocaches. The link to Garmin Rino is https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=146
  15. Neos2, thank you for the list of starter caches. We found the above 2 yesterday PM. We also looked for Wilson & Freddy's Deck but didn't find them. Whooooo! Fun! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Now you're off and running! PS Are you going to log that you found them? I didn't see your log on the cache page. Hmmm! No, I didn't do that. I marked them found on my GPS but stopped there. OK, I went to geocaching.com & did log entries for each found cache. Reading the log entries is probably half the fun for the person hiding the cache. We'll get this down yet. Thanks again.
  16. Wayless, I don't see an option on my 76CSx for 'lock on road'. Prompted, follow road & off road are the only choices? Thanks for your help. I'm not WaylessWood, but I might be able to help. "Lock on Road" is a feature you set through the Setup menu: * From any screen, hit "Menu" twice. * From this Main Menu, select "Setup" and hit "Enter." * From this Setup menu, select "Map" and hit "Enter." * Use the left and right arrow "keys" to highlight the leftmost icon at the top of the screen: "Map Setup - General." * The fourth item in the list will read "Lock on Road." Set this to "Off." Hope this helps! --Larry Edit to add: I have a 60CSx, but I think the procedure is the same or very similar for a 76CSx. Larry is correct, the procedure is the same for the 76CSx. You can also access the map setup screen when the unit is displaying the map by pressing Menu - Setup Map - Enter and then navigating to the "Map Setup - General" display. Nice. Two different ways to get there. I have now turned 'lock on road' to off. Thanks, Larry & Wayless.
  17. Neos2, thank you for the list of starter caches. We found the above 2 yesterday PM. We also looked for Wilson & Freddy's Deck but didn't find them. Whooooo! Fun!
  18. Wayless, I don't see an option on my 76CSx for 'lock on road'. Prompted, follow road & off road are the only choices? Thanks for your help.
  19. Thanks all for the hints, help & encouragement. We'll try again soon. You can use the follow road setting to get you there, but when it's gotten you as close as it can, you want to press "menu" and then select "re-calculate". It will then ask you again if you'd like to follow road or go off road, select "off-road" then you'll get the pointer to follow to your final destination. Happy hunting! DCC Wow! that sounds a lot easier than menu/menu/setup/routing & choosing off road. Thanks for the suggestion.
  20. Thanks all for the hints, help & encouragement. We'll try again soon.
  21. Yes, you're both right. I do remember the menu coming up where I chose 'follow the road'. I'll figure out how to change that & try again. Thanks.
  22. This is my first attempt to find Geocache items with my new GPSMAP 76CSx. I have City Navigator 2008 & have downloaded many geocache locations from MyGarmin.com My wife said “This sounds fun, lets go.” So Sunday afternoon in the rain we went to search for a half dozen locations. On my GPSMAP I entered: Find/geocache/chose GC10WQ9/ go to is highlighted so I hit enter. These are caches in town & close to home so I thought this would be easy! After several turns from our house the GPS said approaching cache on the right. We were on a paved street with paved parking lots & 1 or 2 story business buildings by the parking lots. The GPS continued to say “approaching cache on the right” for several blocks. Where? All I saw was a parking lot with a dumpster & an office building. No hints on how far or that we passed the cache. After 5 blocks of the GPS saying “ahead on the right” I pressed find & selected the same cache again. It directed us around on streets toward the cache & eventually said ahead on right -- no hints at how far or when we passed the cache? We tried this on 5 caches in the city & one about 5 miles out into the country. We never found a single cache. Wife finally said “Lets go home, this isn’t fun!” Last year I had an old Garmin Emap. I used it to put my waypoints in for ocean & river fishing spots. When I did a ‘go to’ for a fishing spot it gave me an arrow for the heading & told me how far. If I passed the waypoint it immediately told me where the waypoint was & how far away. Why can’t this hundreds of dollars GPS & City Nav software be at least as good as my old Emap I sold on eBay for $40.00?
