  1. I was so absorbed examining a rock wall for a micro once, I didn't notice the young couple had walked up the trail and were staring at me. Lord knows how long they'd been watching. Quite without thinking, I blurted out "lookin' for chipmunks!" cheerfully.

Like that was any help AT ALL.

What're you going to do when you find them, lady -- bite their heads off?

    AuntieWeasel!!!???

    Hi there!

  2.

If you were an atheist and created a cool little spaghetti monster personal trade item that you put into caches, how would you feel if I deemed your item to be offensive because it conflicted with my personal worldview and removed it from any cache I came across?

I am an atheist, and I don't put atheism-related materials or objects into caches because I don't believe in using geocaches to impose my worldview on others. If I noticed atheism materials in a cache, I would likely remove them.

Okay, but please don't remove the tracts extolling the virtues of the Cult of the Blue Bow. That would just be going too far...

ALL HAIL THE POWER OF THE BLUE BOW!!!

I can't believe I read this whole thread to make sure no one posted that before I did!

  3. Briansnat - congratulations. I must have missed the thread where we could vote on this, but I'm glad that you were honored in such a way. Is there anyway to find out more about the SOUSGE? I tend not to use that "google" search engine thing because I'm afraid it stores my data. There have been strange people hanging around my house.

    Anyway, congratulations!

this should keep your data safe and will save energy too

Thank you! Now I can perhaps remove the tin foil hat for a while.

Unless Briansnat tells me not to...

  5. I just started caching over the weekend and am attempting to place my first cache but i keep running into all these dadgum rules. First i placed my cache in a park a good walk from another existing cache, only to find out that it's too close to the other. So i go get it today and move it way back into the woods along a creek. Then the reviewer says that i need to submit a permit number from the park, so i go to the provided link to fill out the questions and i am amazed at the list of rules. For instance the cache has to be with 25 feet of a paved trail and no ammo boxes are allowed. So looks like i'll be footing it back out tomorrow through the snow to move it yet again.

I thought that this hobby would be way cooler than it is. I am kind of a thrill junky and was hoping to go on these big hikes and kayaking across lakes. But it seems that all the caches around here are within 50 feet of the parking lot. Is there another geocache website for thrill seekers? I want the kind of caches that are in a cave 50 feet up a cliff side.

The extra rules are from the park people, who do not want to be inundated with "there's a bomb in the park" calls.

Congrats on just starting the hobby. You will enjoy it if you let go some of the angst and look for the ones that thrill you. As you can see, caches are rated in terms of difficulty and terrain, so go for the higher terrain ones. Become a premium member and customize your pocket queries to filter out the ones that you don't like. There are plenty of exciting caches out there - you just gotta put in some time to find them.

In our area, Vinnie and Sue put out some great caches called Psycho Urban caches. Right now the advanced search feature does not want to work for me, or I would provide links.

Check it out, join some local groups, and get excited!! And ... welcome to the addiction!

  6. Whoever invented capital letters and punctuation was very wise.

The person who invented correct grammar and sentence structure was wise as well.

(I edited this post to eliminate an unnecessary word.)

    capital letters are sooooo 1980s..

look im new to cacheing. urbex cacheing may not be for you. but alot of people want it. and its going to happen if you like it or not. ok? im just trying to get it kicked off

When adding the suffix "ing" to a word ending with a silent "e", it is customary to drop the "e" and add the suffix.

OK, so I was using the old fashioned definition of underground. I just saw the terms "unaproveable and illegal caches", "trying to keep it quiet", trespassing, danger warnings, added to that the trendy term Urbex, and assumed that underground meant it was subversive to traditional Geocaching. But hey, what do I know, I still use capitol letters?

Have fun in your urban dungeons, I'll stick to the walks in the park.

    Capitol = the building

Capital = uppercase letters (among other definitions)

  7. Folks, it seems that I owe all of you who have posted here -- and the entire geocaching community -- a sincere and heartfelt apology. It seems, based both upon the progress of this thread and the outraged reaction of the geocaching community (judging from the PMs and emails that I have received since starting this thread), that I have inadvertently opened a thread about the most controversial and most-despised practice in the history of geocaching, namely, the practice of signing the logbook and failing to file an online find log. While it is true that the topic of fake find logs is somewhat controversial and somewhat divisive, and has led to many angst-filled threads, the current topic of signing the logbook but refusing to log an online find has proven to be at least one hundred times ore powerful in acting as a lightning rod for controversy, hostility, angst and bickering. Judging from the horrid angst-filled posts that precede this post, I would venture a guess that this current topic (i.e., that to which this thread is devoted) is the most divisive and most controversial practice in the history of geocaching.

I apologize for all the angst and, while I am sure that many of us will receive death threats for having raised this most despised and most-reviled of topics, I am sure that later generations of geocachers will remember our efforts to air this despicable and evil practice (i.e., of signing the logbook but failing to find an online log) with gratitude and reverence.

    Please, carry on...

    I accept your apology.

  8. Phony loggers continue to sit in their chairs at home. The rest of us are forced to start remembering codes if we want to continue playing.

All this idea does is punish the honest people.

Geocaching.com should add a "delete log" button for hiders.

You're right, they should. After the owner verifies the logbook wasn't signed.

    or something. ;)

Wow!! You guys are really smart!! Are you, like, Approvers or something? You should tell Jeremy!

  9. Okay, I'll bite.

    (ha, get it? "I'll bite"?)

It's okay to post the picture, but you didn't really find the cache. Write a note and warn the others. Then come back when nice Mr. Snake is sleeping and find the cache.

  10. The only thing I want returned for a hide is an appropriate log. If we start expecting people to maintain a ten percent hide ratio we are going to have a ton of crappy caches tossed out without thought to creativity or interesting local. Some people can hide nice caches and others can't. No sense in forcing the point.

Look at it like this, we all listen to music. Should we all record a song for every one hundred we hear? I know that none of you want to hear me sing.

    I do!!

  11. Log your DNF if you didn't find it. Post a note on the cache page asking about its status. Email the owner at least a few times over a couple of weeks asking about the status. If you see a long string of DNF logs from various cachers - consider logging a SBA log.

If no response then add it to your ignore list and move on with life.

If you get a response - take action that is appropriate based on the response.

You really do not have to find each and every cache out there.

:D Oh yes I do!! I have to find every cache and if I can't find it I will crawl up in the fetal postion saying "I can't find the cache, I can't find the cache".

Then the men in the white suit and with the big I Love me jacket will then hall me away. :):P

Sorry couldn't pass that one up. :D

    :D:)

You sound like me, Big Bear!
