  1. Thanks! I think this may actually work the best for what we are trying to do! I'm thinking each town or general area per tour and then give them all similar names!
  2. Hello. I'm wondering if anyone out there has created any type of Waymarking Trail (similar to GeoCaching Trails) using existing waymarks and/or adding new waymarks to an existing category? I'm new to the concept of Waymarking and a little rusty with geocaching, but a group of us in my county want to create a historical trail for visitors to our area. Originally I suggested virtual caches, but learned they have gone by the wayside. I have been researching Waymarking and i think this would work, but I was just hoping that I could hear from some people who may have already put together something to get additional information. Here's what I'm thinking: Our tourism dept wants to be able to get people excited about the historical things in our county....we could create a trail (adding waymarks where necessary) and then have people visit a given set of waymarks. Once they post of Waymarking.com, they can let us know and they would get a little gift for doing so and then when the complete the entire "trail' (specified by us) they get a coin or some sort of larger gift. Any thoughts?
  3. Hello. I'm just starting to learn about Waymarking. We have a project idea at work that would have been great for a "virtual" geocache trail, but since those aren't allowed anymore, I think it will work even better as a Waymarking trail. In doing research, I see you first form a group of at least 3 premium members who then submit their category idea. Now....would that be for the MAIN category? What about subcategories? Just as an example, if you wanted to create a category called something like "Path through history in NYS" then have subcategories for each County, is that one request for the main categories, or do the individual subcategories all need to go through the whole process? Thanks in advance for your help!
  4. Hello. I'm looking to put together a couple of short low-level hiking/geocaching trips in Allegany State park. Does anyone have some suggestions? Thanks!! N of JandN93
  5. Hello. We recently set up my hubby with his own geocaching name and I was thinking about changing my geocaching name just a little to match. Has anyone ever done this before? Does it cause any complications with past hides, the friends list, or trackable items? Please advise. Thanks!! N of JandN93
  6. OK, I got the new account up and logged all of our joint finds, backdated to the original find date. NOW, I'm looking at changing my user account name. Has anyone done this before? Does it create any problems with your hides, finds, friends, or forum posts? Any thoughts on the topic would be appreciated. Thank you! N of JandN93
  7. Thank you. I had just found the Username Change information. So, it sounds like it's NOT an issue to date a log a date that was BEFORE the account was created. That's good. Thanks so MUCH! N of JandN93
  8. Hello. When the hubby and I started caching just over a year ago, we simply set up one geocache account for the both of us. Now that we are sticking to this new hobby, we are thinking of creating a new account so that one of us will keep the current account and the other will have the new one. HERE'S my question: if we create the new account, could we log (on-line) all the finds that we have had together thus far under the new account by backdating them to the original find date? I know that doesn't put them in the paper log book, but it would keep our finds the same. Has anyone done this? And here's something I just thought of, can I change the name on the current account? Thanks for your help!! N of JandN93
  9. The event is the ACS Relay for Life and it is at a school. I've done some research and found there is NOT another cache close by and I'm wondering if it would be better (ie legal) to put in a permanent cache on the school grounds and just have it go live the day of the event (I would just have to get permission from the school, right?). I want to follow the rules and there would absolutely be NO sales pitches, but the event would be going on if a cacher wanted to check it out. I'm hoping there is a legit way to do something because the ACS has offered to give me lots of swag to put in the cache!!
  10. OK, so we've been caching for awhile and will be placing our first cache soon. We have already got an idea, etc. for that and I think we're ready to go. I have another idea for what will be our second cache hide and would like some thoughts, etc. So, let me explain. This June, we will be taking part in a local fundraising event that the group wants to get more non-event participants to come check out. Is it possible to create a 1 day cache (or event?) that I could locate at the event, probably our tent site? There will be NO entrance fee and I would be able to get coordinates, etc. before posting it. Any thoughts, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks! N of JandN93
  11. We hadn't met too many cachers except for those at events until we were working on the last few counties of the Allegheny GeoTrail in PA. One day we met 3 different sets of cachers and almost met a 4th had he known we were cachers. We really enjoyed meeting cachers from other areas and learning about GeoTrails in their area. As we pull in to an area, we often wonder if the person pulling out just finished finding the cache or if the person pulling in behind is doing the same thing. What a great way to meet lots of new people and get out and about!! N of JandN93
  12. OK, here's something I need to start researching. When you plan on flying to a location and then geocaching and then later flying back home, what is the best geocaching items to pack as well as the best way to pack them? I know that the airlines and Homeland security are always changing the rules, so I'd love to hear from those who have recently traveled in the US. My guess is that the little Swiss army knives we carry would be a no no, at least in the carryons and possibly in the checked luggage. Any tip, tricks, etc for the traveling geocacher would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!! N of JandN93
  13. Thanks for the tips Neos2. I thought about Woodstock VII, but I don't have any vacation time until mid-June. :-) We will attend the ASP GeoBash IV, though. We can't miss that as we are locals.
  14. Thank you. You know about 2 years ago (before we started geocaching) we did a road trip to Maine on Rte 1 in October. It was so beautiful!! I definitely want to do that again, but in the Spring. Maybe in 2010. Yeah, we are thinking a fall trip might not be so bad. Our friends want us to fly out to Vegas with them at the end of July. We thought - sure, we'll geocache while they gamble. then, we remembered it's the desert in the middle of summer. So then we thought, maybe not. Now, I'm really starting to like the idea of spending Thanksgiving on our vacation. Thanks again for the tips.
  15. OK, I don't know what happened to my post, so I'll retype it. The hubby and I started geocaching this past April and LOVE it. In fact, we are already thinking about next year's vacation and we want to make it a geo-vacation. So, any thoughts or ideas on good places to go or good caches to seek? We would be looking at any time after June, but since we are from NYS and don't like the heat all that much, we are starting to settle in on mid to late fall. We have also somewhat honed in on doing a driving trip to northern Florida. We figure Florida would be the main part of the trip, but we would be sure to have at least one cache find in each state we drive through. We are open to suggestions!! Thanks!! N of JandN93
  16. Done. Looks like we both fall right in the average of all the other responders.
  17. Thanks for your tips. I like to get a head start on planning any trip. Now that we have started geocaching, it's the FIRST thing I think of. Thanks again!!
  18. Hello. We may be traveling out west next summer with friends and we plan to geocache while they gamble in Vegas. I'm trying to research if there will be any events within driving distance while we'll be out there. Anyone have any easy ideas on how to research upcoming events? I'd be interested in hearing them!! Thanks!! N of JandN93
  19. Ours just came in today. We got the stickers, too. We are in the process of having a really cool rear window graphic made and then we will have the travel bug stickers in the back side windows of the truck. Hopefully we can have everything in place before we go to the GeoCoinFest in Pittsburgh next month!! This is all so fun :-)
  20. Well, we decided to bite the bullet and order one. We got a new (to us) truck and we also want to get a custom see-thru graphic for the back window. It's going to become our caching vehicle. Any thoughts on the custome see-thru graphic? We already have somewhat designed something, but we are trying to figure out where to get it. Thanks!!
  21. Hello. We are still relative newbies, but are learning fast. I recently heard that some people make their vehicles into travel bugs so others can discover them at events. We are just curious how many people do this and what others think about it. Thanks for your comments!!
  22. Hello! The hubby and I are very new to the whole Geocaching thing and have decided to become geocoin collectors. In trying to learn about the process, I would like to here from others as to what the basic "rules" are and how someone just starting out should increase their collection. So here are some questions I have thought of, but feel free to add any other information you might have! Thanks!! 1. Should coins I receive be activated when I don't know whether or not I'll eventually trade them? 2. I assume there are events just for geocoin collectors, how do I find out about them? 3. Is it best not to put coins into caches, and instead look to trade them? Again, these are just the things I can think of. All thoughts are welcomed! Thanks again! JandN93
