  1. You lot are cynical I'm sure all the canalside caches have the relevant permission Thanks for the feedback I will be looking into it further. Cheers Nigel.
  2. Hi all, forgive me if this has been asked before but I have looked for the answer by keyword and I haven't found anything. So could anyone please tell me who I would need to contact regarding the placement of caches alongside the canal network, the Walsall area in particular, I would be grateful for any help. Thanks Nigel.
  3. I agree with you totally here the first cache I placed was on one of my favourite walks which I wanted to share with others. thats the reason I started caching not the finding but the getting there which is probably the biggest diference between the first caches put out and the newer ones. I regard myself as a walker who caches. I'm not at all bothered about numbers, ratio of finds to placements and all that stuff but if other people play the game that way its of no concern or business of mine.
  4. Nigel Merry Hill or Wton lichfield sutton and tamworth are your best bet!! Phone before you go. Thanks Andy, Elaine, Walsall did say Wolverhampton were probably the best ones to try.
  5. We went into the Millets in union street Brum yesterday and they didn't have any in, tried Walsall today and they reckon that they are not doing them in that store although the web site says that they do .
  6. Old timer I've only just gone forty Ahh yes the good old days going on round trips of hundreds of miles to get three caches . I do agree with a lot of what has already been said about caches being placed just for the sake of placing , I think its down to enthusiasm of the convert and I think I have been guilty of this myself in the past. People seem to go for micros and I don't see anything wrong in a well thought out placement of one but you could say that for any cache I suppose. As for permission it should always be sought I always do that's probably why I only have a handful put out.
  7. If you like micro's you will enjoy Stratford
  8. Gripe 1 they debated this on radio 2. The theory is that if the weather turns out nice you will see this as a bonus and not gripe and blame the met office. Gripe 2 Gripe 3 get used to it
  9. Born in a cardboard box me! Blue collar well green really and I find being called white trash offensive.
  10. I use North face with zips just above the knee so you get two for one, they are 100 percent nylon and they dry very quickly.
  11. Except that a poor quality, badly hidden and badly maintained cache, but easy to find and in a busy area will almost certainly get a lot of hits, and a high quality, well maintained but difficult to find cache at the end of a long walk will get few. The ratio takes no account of cache quality, yet I'm sure you would agree that cache quality is extremely important. You can compare geocaching statistics until the cows come home, but you can't derive any meaningful or useful information from the comparison. Rgds, Andy I agree with that, one out of my four active caches seems to be getting a lot more hits than the other three and it is the one I'm the least happy with, the location is urban and close to the M6, the others need a bit more effort to get to. Being rubbish at maths I don't bother with numbers ratio's or stats much I just keep plodding on. Karma thats an area of Walsall whats that got to do with caching and I don't think there are any caches there anyway.
  12. I always love those hints! or maybe "Tree Stump" when your in a forest another one I came accross was " Gloves needed to retrieve" not much help when your already at the cache site... But by far the best ones have got to be either a name or word that you need google to translate it into laymans terms. Guilty I have one in latin but it should be no trouble to folk who like gardening. Hadn't thought to mention gloves they might be needed too.
  13. I always look at the clue before setting out then nearly always forget it. If you always say tree, ivy, under to yourself you will not be far out a lot of the time.
  14. I am not the most prolific setter of caches but I do try to get the cache where it says it is on the cache page, I don't think that's too much to ask for. I do think there is a lot of fannying around these days and being clever for clevers sake. Just give me a box with a log book and pen and a few decent swops. Sorry another topic. I always check my co-ords half a dozen times at least before submission and I think they are as close as they can be.
  15. Same here. We could always make up a funny handshake like other secret societies.
  16. Even red sauce has a use....... I have thought of your penalty...............faggots, I've never tried faggots, sure they are from BRUMMIE land M Oh dear oh dear oh dear, wi a brummies washe yower mouth out. up the wolves.
  17. Yes they are yellow sorry for the confusion, mine has a globe icon on the front but I don't they are available new anymore, the later ones don't have the icon on them, so are probably better value watch out for that. I think the e-trex is a great little gpsr, very robust bounces very well and fits into pockets and bags easily. You could try outdoor shops I have even seen em in well known stationary shops.
  18. I did my first cache by cycle today a round trip of 13 or so miles, I didn't use the car as the fuel warning light was flashing at me yet again, It seems to be almost always on at the moment. But got one cache and managed to check one of mine out at the same time so it was worth the effort I think.
  19. You can pick the old e-trex yellas chip as cheaps, I've had mine nearly 5 years and it does a fine job, not paperless I know, not being very gadgety myself I find a note book and pen does the trick for me, others may disagree. I suppose it depends how much your willing to outlay. If they decide it's not for them what have they lost just a few quid, if they go for a basic setup they can always upgrade later if they feel the need to.
  20. We recently completed a 5 mile walk starting from Avebury which we enjoyed greatly, starting at the national trust car park it takes you via Silbury hill, West kennet long barrow and the sanctuary, along the ridgeway and back into Avebury along the Wessex ridgeway. If you want you can extend the walk to take in the Earthcache at Fyfield and the Windmill hill cache. We found this excellent walking country.
  21. Maybe two then oh and you could check out Robin hoods tree?
  22. We walked Hadrians wall in 2004 starting from Newcastle, there were plenty of places to eat the pubs and hotels along the route were all good with great menus so you will have no trouble there. The natives were very kind and helpful too The museums are good we liked the roman army museum and Vindolanda and they are well served by the bus that runs along the route, the AD 122. If you can only manage one section of wall Housteads would be my choice and or sewingshield crags.
  23. I agree, as a rule I avoid micro's as I don't particularly like em but I have found a few and 1 or 2 of those it was the location that made them special not the size of the cache.
  24. We stayed in/near Craven Arms (in a B&B in place Halford) some years back. It's lovely there. I must admit to a vested intrest in that area but it is fab walking country. Around Wenlock and Ironbridge is also a good place to park your car up and go caching. I should take my own advice now and do a few there.
