  1. So did this one get turned down due to proximity issues? That picture looks awfully familiar. I think it is near a stage of a Mystery Cache. Oops, never mind, I see that you are in Baton Rouge and not New Awlins.
  2. I’m guessing you are using Mapsource for a master data base for your self. If that is the case, just zoom to the area you want and then window around all the waypoints in that area and then “copy” them to your clipboard and open a new Mapsource file. Then paste them and you should get what you want. That is if I’m understanding what you are trying to do.
  3. I’m not sure how it would work in the PN-40, but in my Garmin you can clear your track log by going to the main menu and then selecting tracks. Then on the Track menu there are options to save and delete/clear the track log. If you are interested in keeping your tracks from your adventures save it first before deleting it. It is then saved a a trak that can be turned on and off independatanly from the “Current Track” log.
  4. I got a chance to use a Magellan Triton this weekend. Some ladies came to an event and had never cached before and asked for some help. I was not impressed with this unit. I’m not sure which model it was, but it was burnt orange in color. The unit had major problems getting and keeping satellite signal and the menu structure and interface was horrendous IMHO. I told the lady to take it back and get a Garmin.
  5. I'm helping out at the Circle 10 Council in Dallas TX. Still waiting on the starter pack from National. Some cool things lined up for 2010. I've started a Cache to Eagle Series in the Gray Owl District.
  6. I would suggest that in an urban setting, we already have enough crap to deal with which screws up the signal -- power lines, building reflection, etc. -- that we don't need the further reduction of accuracy by soft coords. Try GCGV88 some time -- multi-level concrete walkway over a major thoroughfare, steel grillwork on the walkway itself, with power lines running overhead. Why would I think to look there, if the coords are pointing toward a light pole 50+ feet away from this??? If I ever make it to Ohio I will give it a try. But my example earlier was 50ft from a IN PLAIN SIGHT HUGE AMMO CAN. Big difference between an ammo can half the size of a small car and a micro. I would like to remind you that in my first post I stated clearly that it depends on the hide. I would not post soft coords for a micro, nano, or other such needle in a haystack type of hide.
  7. I came across a soft coord hide today. It was a 2 stage multi that takes you between a grocery store and a self storage facility. After finding a fun accurately marked first stage, I find the 2 stage coords takes me a few hundred feet down the ally that is created by the store and storage facility. I zeroed out exactly in the middle of the ally-way equal distance between the two walls. No issues with signal, as I had multiple sats locked in and showing 8ft accuracy. There are features on both walls that would allow for a hide. Really quite simple check both walls. Of course I checked the wrong one first, but hey, that's my luck. The funny thing is that the hint for stage 2 could apply to both walls, but the features were not the same. Another perfect example for a soft coordinate hide.
  8. Yeah, and then the 10 or so people who look for puzzles in my area would find it and that would be it. List it as a traditional, and everyone that comes thru the area will find it.
  9. Man, I should have put this at the bottom of my first post to this topic.
  10. Here is a purely hypothetical scenario. Small cluster of trees say 45' in diameter in an otherwise open field. Soft coordinates in the center of said cluster, and when a cacher gets there they find 50 35mm film cans zip tied to branches of several of the trees. Only one contains the log book the rest contain various statements like try again, not yet, getting closer, etc.............. I stand by my statement that soft coordinates can be used depending on the hide and especially if it is a “IN PLAIN SIGHT” hide. Specifically the large homemade ammo can in the picture of one of my previous post. Come to think of it I would not only post soft coords for a hide like that, but I would make sure it was a very accurate reading for the closest Lamp Post in the parking lot, providing it was within 50’ or so of the GIANT AMMO CAN. I'm not going to take someone on a scenic 10 mile trek to frustrate them, but in urban settings, why is it not acceptable to be less rigid about the GUIDELINES?
  11. Sometimes I have get 8ft of accuracy showning on my LegendC, but typically it is about 14ft.
  12. Gotta agree with Zeke. There is some uncertainty associated with Geocaching without purposely making the coordinates inaccurate. If you want to to make the cache challenging use better camo or a better hiding spot. Be creative not dishonest . I think you missed Zeke's point. "Besides, having "exact" coords and walking right up to the cache almost blindfolded seems to make the find kind-of lame. I thought there was supposed to be some challenge to this game." Especially when it involves an "In Plain Sight" meaning not hidden or camouflaged container.
  13. A Cool Cache by Dale n Barb GC15RQB A Cool Cache by Dale n Barb GC15RQB I saw it today on another thread about largest containers.
  14. My caches I'm talking about are not quite this obvious, but in the same general spirit. Easily seen and/or read from the spot I marked and provided. I do take great care on taking accurate coords for all the rest of my waypoints.
  15. If I had hidden this container, you bet your bippy I would have posted soft coords, maybe even as far as 50' in a case such as this. I would have taken great care the offset would have been to the parking lot side of the container, but other than that, why not?
  16. It's happened, but word of mouth usually gets folks to un-ignore them. So be it, not eveyone has to find my caches.
  17. That would have been the land owner at the time the cache was hidden.
  18. I knew I was going to get this response to my post. When I say “In Plain Sight” I mean that the stage or cache is totally visible. Here is an example of a multi I have that is based on characters in some of Stephen King’s book. The cache is called "Low Men in Yellow Coats". In the books these are shady characters that operate on the fringes of our reality and an alternate reality. They communicate in our world thru various means like hopscotch markings on side walks and lost pet posters. My cache is a 3 stage multi where the first stage coords are dead on and is a reflector mounted to a railing. The second stage is located near a 90 degree turn on a low traffic road. It’s a lost pet poster and the numbers to call if you find the pet are the coords to the final. The poster can be seen in Street View on the Google. Look here the coords were taken inbetween the 2 black and yellow arrow signs. The turn in the road has about 20 or so small post with 2 or 3 reflectors each. I took my coords about 15’ away from the telephone pole that the pet poster is attached to. The poster is facing towards GZ and is plainly visible and readable from 15’ not to mention that it’s laminated, so it really stands out. Another case in point is one of mine that is now archived due to the area being redeveloped. “2,259,040” was located at an old abandoned putt-putt golf course. There were several light fixtures located around the course. I took a piece of PVC and made it look like a fluorescent light tube and placed it in the fixture after I made sure that it was not live of course. There was nothing else close to the fixture other than the golf hole that the light fixture once illuminated. I think I took my coords for that one at the cup for that hole about 5’ away from the light pole. The cache could be seen from 300’ away if you knew what you were looking for. The cache title “2,259,040” is the patent number for the fluorescent tube.
  19. It really depends on the hide. If the hide is about the destination, scenic view or a point of interest, it should be as close as possible. If the hide is about the hide/container of an “In Plain Sight” cache or stage, I see nothing wrong with taking a waypoint 10 or 15 feet away from the cache/stage.
  20. It's not an data base but just a topic on the forums for people to list caches. Data Base Topic
  21. Circle 10's Gray Owl District has one more Cache to Eagle cache published. That makes 3 and I have 4 and 5 in the works. Here is a Bookmark Listing! I had a meeting with the Council Staff responsible for implementing the entire 100th Anniversary Celebrations Program for Circle 10. She was after basic information about geocaching in general. She has read info but was not sure how to include it into Scouting activities. I think it is OK to share basic information we discussed but some of these are just ideas so nothing too specific. Encourage each District to start a Cache to Eagle Series. I would look for this to be the first line of action you will see happen. This will be a topic of discussion during a upcoming Activities Committee meeting where all of the Activities Chairpersons meet to plan for the upcoming year. A booth at the Scout Show next May There was talk of a Council wide Camporee and include geocaching as one of the activities. A National Pinewood Derby Travel Bug Race sometime after Derby season is over in early Spring. Each Council will submit one car to race to the National Jamboree this summer. Circulation of 5 Pillars of Scouting Travel Bugs from each Council representing the 5 values being promoted during the 100th festivities. With geoswag surprises along the way as incentives to get geocachers involved with making this happen.
  22. Good Chance that it is this cache GC1QQN6 SYLB #1 – O.G. READ(AND SO MUCH)MORE Should be located 105ft from the coordinates you listed
  23. Here are 5 upcoming events in San Antonio: GC1YK7F GC1YQ3D GC1ZB8R GC1Z37R GC1YKBN
  24. It should hold 500 waypoints. How are you loading them, also if you are looking at them "by nearest" you may ony see the 50 nearest, try "by name" and you should see all 500.
