Girl scouts provided lunch for my most recent hiking outing. Those Tagalongs sure are good on a cold, snowy day...

We have family up in Wheeling, but every time I've been up there recently, there's been no time to go shopping... We're thinking about making a trip up, specifically to shop soon...

Seriously. I don't see any reason why you'd even WANT to place a cache there. I mean, it would have to a really pretty view for me to ignore the noisy airplanes less than .5 miles from the cache...

Palm Zire And Wifi And Geocaching.com?
TeamK-9 replied to Cache Liberation Front's topic in GPS technology and devices
there is a simplified version of the site somewhere... I think it's more for web enabled phones, but you could still get what you're looking for.. here we go... -
I'm with Kealia. On my two caches, I only put the parking coordinates when problems might arise from the coordinates not being added. But when hunting for caches, I always appreciate coords for parking. Generally, when I'm in an area where I'm out of my element (ie, the city) I do a quick check of the map to see where I might be able to park, and generally that works. If I don't know where I'm supposed to park, I generally slow down, and put on the four way flashers, and look for parking...

Well, this is still along the lines of the basic gift card idea. But on one cache the owner simply left a card asking the FTF to email them. When I emailed him, he set up a date, and we met at a local sandwich shop where he bought us lunch. This idea is really cool because the finder gets a free lunch and you get to meet the cacher. Another thing that I generally put in is a new Nalgene water bottle. If the container isn't big enough, I'll generally just leave a note asking the person to email me to arrange the claiming of their prize..

Ummm, that is how it works last time I checked...

I've been playing with Google maps for a while now, and I'm really liking it. Maybe when they officially release it, Groundspeak will add it as an option from cache page. But I don't think they'll do anything while it is still in beta...

Lowrance really was the original GPS maker, but then, when GPS started becoming really popular, they didn't invest enough into the whole thing, and so they lost alot of business to Garmin and Magellan, who quickly acceled to the top, leaving Lowrance way back. Quite frankly, I don't own one, but I used one once as a loner, and I didn't have any problems with it...

Not only are they federal property, but I'm pretty sure that placing something on one would be considering tampering with federal property and could get you in some trouble with the postal inspectors.

Have You Ever Got The Shivers Geocaching Alone
TeamK-9 replied to bearinthewoods's topic in General geocaching topics
Actually caching at night isn't very scary for me. Generally, I have my headlamp on, and I have my maglite attached to the back of my bag. The maglite is great because not only is it good to see what the noise up ahead is, but if the noise up ahead turns out to be a small dinosaur, you could club it to death... On occasion, I bushwack the last 500 feet or so to a cache. Generally, this scares me. But one time, I was out on my own, the rest of the team was at the top of a hill. I bushwacked to a cache. I kept going deeper and deeper. I was only like 500 feet when I went in, but it was so much more walking because I had to get around lots of brush. I had no clue where I was, and I was scared crapless. Then all of a sudden, a deer pops its head out ten feet from me and runs away. I almost wet myself. At that point, I was thoroughly creeped out, and wondering how long it would be before SAR got called out. Then, all of a sudden, there was a break in the brush, and I found myself staring at the cache. After getting what I needed, I looked up to see a trail, and just down the hill from that, a major highway... -
I'm to the point where I can pick up basic words and phrases, but still a quick glance never does anything for me...

I watched and was really satisfied. I have to agree that Survivor and the Amazing Race are two of my favorite shows. Anyway, I'm rooting for Ian. He's actually a friend of my brother, they were in several classes together at PSU and they were partners for the state EMT class/test.

Thank you for you contributions to the geocaching community through your moderation of our forums, and thank you for you continued contribution to the community of reviewing the caches for our fellow cachers in beautiful state of Colorado. (Wow, that was pretty wordy wasn't it?)

My first, only, and most memorable event was last years CITO. We started the morning at a pavillion. Logbooks were signed, TBs dropped off, people introduced, and they had sign ups for the different tasks that needed down. After everyone had gotten a chance to get aquanted and settled down, the people from the parks department were introduced and they explained what we would doing and how grateful they were. After that, we worked until lunch time at our requested tasks. At lunch, we had lots of great food. The coordinator had put up an itemized list with exactly what needed to be brought, (for example 2 - 12 packs of mountain dew) as people logged that they would attend, they said what they were bringing and the list was updated. This lead to a really good cookout. Next, they had several games available. The first was sort of just an icebreaker game, designed to help people meet eachother. The next was an accuracy game. One of the coordinators had found a random spot, taken a waypoint, and printed the waypoint up. From there, people were given small flags and asked to put their flag where they thought the waypoint actually was. They also had a small timed competition where people had to find a micro. There were also several caches put out for people to find, and the park was filled with preexisting caches that could be found.

Ha! What a coincidence...I've been going out of my way to mock and revile them, myself. The Sacajawea and SB Anthony dollars are two of the butt-ugliest coins the US ever minted (though, granted, that was before the 50-states quarters) and they both had the same grievous, deal-killing design flaw -- far too close in shape, size and color to the quarter. I'm not keen on giving up our paper ones, no matter how much we'd save by doing it, but if we have to go with a $1 coin, check out the British £1 for a more practical shape and size. Oh, and if those two chicks are the best my gender has to honor and look up to, I'm going to slink back to the kitchen. The indian head penny is a great coin, but even better is the buffalo nickel. Fantastic bit of sculpture, both sides, and one of the few "indian heads" in American public art that really looks like an indian. We leave lots of Sac dollars in caches. But one of the things we seem to have a lot of is $2 bills and SBA dollars. My family has always been the type to invest in strange things. For example, one christmas, my grandfather got silver? bars for everyone in the family, I have mine sitting under my bed. But my dad really has a crapload of weird stuff. I guess at one point, he thought that the SBA dollars were cool, and so he probably bought a hundred dollars worth, thinking they'd gain worth over the years. The same goes for the stacks of uncirculated two dollar bills he has sitting on his desk.

Jeez rusty, don't tell them that... Anyway, I'm trying to work Lock 'n Lock containers into my hiding. Right now, I'm waiting for it to warm up a bit...

Gps's To Be Used To Taxed Drivers....?
TeamK-9 replied to jollybgood's topic in General geocaching topics
I have an aluminum foil hat just for these sorts of occasions. Big brother will NEVER find me! -
I think that if they implimented this policy, they'd need to recruit almost twice as many new reviewers.
-
I think that if the cache was placed on the farmer's land, or even close enough for him to think it's his land, then it's your fault, not his, not the last finder.
-
What would make it necessary? If it's extremely challenging and people have logged DNF's or it's just been a while, he usually tries for it.

Usefulness Of Pda W/ Keyboard Vs. Laptop
TeamK-9 replied to globalgirl's topic in GPS technology and devices
I was actually wondering this same thing. I already have used a PDA for caching, but it recently died. I've been living without, but recently, I've been considering getting a new one, this was inspired by my recent involved in the USGS national map corps. I'd basically need to be able to edit an excel or excel compatible spreadsheet while in the car. I could use my laptop, but it's older, and there is something seriously wrong with the battery, and for it to be of any use in the car, you have to plug in the inverter, and plug in the laptop charger. Quite frankly, I'd rather use my car's one cigarette point for something else. So is an external keyboard practical, or is it easier to just learn Grafitti? -
I think it is a mistake to assume that this why cachers go for FTF. We are one of the FTF "obsessors" around here, and I assure you I do not go caching at all hours of the day just so I can feel better than someone else. It is a challenge and it is fun. For all of you that keep getting beat to the FTF, let me ask you this: If you had the time to go caching whenever you wanted, and were FTF on a lot of local caches, would you honestly "sit back" and wait for someone else to find it first? Honestly?? Everyone has an equal and fair shot at being FTF. Sounds like a bit of sour grapes, IMHO. I know of one cacher in my area who has the time and ability to have himself and two other people out there at all hours of day and night. But he doesn't. Recently, he just sits back, and waits for the first couple finders, or he waits a couple days, he only goes for FTF anymore if he really feels it's necessary.

In my area, there's about three of us who generally are to a new cache within the first day, it's generally a race. One of the guys has been caching for maybe 3 years, while myself, and the other guy, have only been caching for exactly a year. We all manage to get an equal number of FTF's usually. We like to play games with eachothers heads though, but it's all in good fun. I'd seriously email your guy and maybe politely ask him to step down and let some other people have fun?
