Took a look at the sat photos of my area. While we are fairly rural, the maps around almost brand new. Most of the stuff terraserve has is low resolution, black and white. These pictures were really good, in color and very accurate. Like I said, they're pretty new too. I can't put an exact date on them, but there are definate features that show that the pictures had to have been taken at most in the last year and a half...

Topographic maps, anyone?

It's actually been pretty reasonable in western pennsylvania lately. We actually live right next to the local sunoco regional filling place. They have gas coming in on pipes that goes into trucks to all the sunocos in the area. Generally the prices are a bit lower than the rest of the area, but we're up to around $2.13 lately..

I used exactly the same approach as Cool Librarian several years ago when my dad and I shared the duties of treasurer for a local 5K. Several local stores and restaurants donated fruit, drinks, and all kinds of random stuff. I'd really look into this kind of stuff...

Yeah, what CardinalRed said. You can only change the coordinates a certain distance. The general rule is that if you're moving it more than that distance, then you should just archive it and start a new cache. But a lot of times, there are special circumstances, and so approvers can move the coordinates for you. But, like I said, if you're moving it too far, it's generally considered better to just start a new cache...

But wouldn't you have also found it if someone had hidden a cache there? No, it was a residential street. Absolutely no tasteful way to place a cache... I don't think I would have enjoyed it if it were just a hide-a-key behind a fence or something...

I like virtuals. Especially the newer ones, placed since the "Wow Factor" rule was started. I mean, there are some really cool virtuals that I did that I learned alot about. Like a street in my brother's neighborhood that is paved with wooden bricks!! How crazy is that? I discovered it because of caching. But then and again, I would have also discovered it two weeks later when there was a story about it in the newspaper. But rumor has it, the newspaper reporter discovered it because of caching...

So Saxy, how many topics about virtuals have you started in the past year? By my count, you're up to three, I could have missed a few, probably QUITE a few...

Hi! None of you probably know me because I'm actually from Pennsylvania, but I was looking for some help from California Geocachers. I like to build models of police cars, and a new project I've been looking forward to is making a couple park rangers vehicles. California is on my list of cars that I'd like to do, because I remember seeing one a long time ago and thinking it was kind of cool. Generally, there is a website that has pictures of a lot of police agencies, but they don't seem to have any pictures of what I need. So I was wondering if anyone in California could snap a few pictures of a ranger's patrol car next time they're in a state park or recreation area? It would be greatly appreciated, and I'd try to send you a geocoin or something to make it worth your while...

This was actually a major problem last year. But the Jeep sponsorship paid for some nifty upgrades to the servers. It's just a matter of technology. All sites will slow down during their peak usage hours, some moreso then others. Generally, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday evenings are pretty big times for the site, and our slow. I wouldn't worry though, Jeremy's probably got some improvements waiting to be implimented...

Okay, my next question is something hopefully a reviewer can help me out. How would this sit with the proximity guidelines. I mean, it's sort of on the line in my mind. On one hand, it's just sort of directions to the cache, on how to follow the trail, and so there'd be no problem with proximity guidelines. On the other hand, you could consider each picture a virtual stage of a multi-cache. I'm hoping not to have any of the pictures in a place where this would even be a problem, but it's just something I was wondering about.

My idea right now is to have all the pictures in a PDF file that will be downloadable from the cache page.

Some people don't log it as a silent protest. Others don't log because they're completely unconcerned with numbers. Your mystery cacher could be either of the two above, or they could just be behind in their logging of caches...

The other day, I came up with an idea for a really cool cache. It will take some planning, and I have a cool theme for it, but I was wondering what everyone else's opinions on it were. Basically, it's a letterbox, but using photographs to lead you to the cache instead of a written description. I'd take pictures of the trailhead, and then any turns on the trail, and then finally, a picture detailing the cache location. All in all, geocachers would have around seven pictures that they'd have to use to lead them to the cache. I'm not explaining it really well, because I never can quite explain cache ideas until they're actually put together. But I think it's a lot cooler than I'm describing. Does anyone know of any caches that use a similar idea?

I think Trimble Outdoors is the company that's sponsoring geocaching. They're actually a division of Trimble, I think. And Trimble makes the really good, industrial/research grade GPS units. Trimble Outdoors: "Trimble Outdoors is a family of software applications for PCs and Nextel cell phones allowing you to get maps, plan trips, navigate routes and share your adventures with friends and family."

I don't get it..... He'd undoubtedly get more money selling the actual items then selling them as what is essentially a "grab bag" type thing...

At the event that I was at, there was just a box of travel bugs left out on a table. People were encouraged to see if they could help any of the bugs towards there goal and take them if they could.. I'd assume that's how most work...

From the main geocaching.com page, click on "Hide and Seek a Cache" About halfway down the page, there is the option to put in coordinates. But as far as I know, there isn't anyway other that pocket queries to actually specify a distance from those coordinates.

I would up the difficulty. Not neccessarily to a 5, but definately up the difficulty. I wouldn't come right out and say that they need a telescoping magnet though. Because then, not only will they have it the first time they go, but they'll no to be looking for a place where they'd need a telescoping magnet...

From what I understand, geocaching as a whole is a sport, and is not really owned by this website, or anyone. But alot of the ideas on this website, and especially the content are owned by Groundspeak. And if you were to use cache information from their site to make a profit, then that is copyright infringement. So, I'm thinking, hide your own caches that are independent from the site completely. Or fire off an email to contact (at) geocaching dot com and have a discussion with the Groundspeak lawyers...
