  1. From what I read, it's just a local salvation army group putting together a geocaching type competition. They're not "sponsoring" geocaching. They just bought advertising on the site. It's like Magellan's yearly geocaching contest. They may or may not buy advertising on this site, but if they did, it wouldn't necessarily mean that one group is sponsoring the other. Sure, the advertisers our "sponsoring" the site by buying ads but still. In my opinion, I think it's a cool idea. Obviously Jeremy is okay with it, so I am too. If it weren't so far away, and the entrance fee wasn't $150, I'd probably do it, just to say I did...
  2. If I want the cache page to look at all special (and I usually do) I use Geommunity's Cache Page Editor. It's a web-based html editor specifically made for designing cache pages... It's pretty neat. Check it Out
  3. Really a nice piece of journalism. Way to go Jamie!
  4. Holy crap! That's a long way. But yah, someone will find it. Just don't expect to get a lot of finds... I don't know if I'd try it. It would require camping gear, and most of my camping gear is too heavy to be for like hiking/backpacking, so I'd need new gear...
  5. On the forums, there is a button that says "http://" just above where you're typing for entering the url of wherever you want to link to. On a cache page, you have to use HTML, which is a pain in the butt for most people. I recomend the cache page editor at geomunity.net
  6. Is it ten miles round trip or ten miles one way? Either way, it wouldn't be incredibly high on my list, but I'd probably eventually get to it...
  7. And people call me weird for taking pictures of police cars.... At least police cars have all kinds of cool blinky lights to look at, airplanes are boooooring...
  8. I think I remember Jeremy once saying that he would NEVER charged money for access to the site's databases... And so while people are paying $30 a year, supporting the site, people can still just get on and check it out without paying...
  9. So I can probably expect around $90 for a screen repair? I think I'll live for the time being, while I save up for a new unit. Maybe I can make my dad pitch in a couple bucks since he's the one who knocked me over.
  10. Sorry, just a normal black and white screen here. So, if I did decide to get "return authorization" from magellan and send it back, I would have to pay some money for repairs? Screw that.... I'm going to start saving towards an Xplorist...
  11. Thanks for the advice, unfortunately nothing I do allows me to register... The website keeps stating that I need to use a 0118 before my 9 digits... However, the 600's serial starts with 0119... These are the things that frustrate me about Magellan... If I can't register, I can't use my Mapsend program... Not that I'm complaining (Much ) but shouldn't they have fixed a lot of these bugs (like a real 600 manual, registration information, etc.) before they sent them out to market? That's the thing about buying any electronic device as soon as it comes out. Generally, there are lots of bugs that manufacturers were too lazy to catch, or just didn't catch. You guys are esentially being the guinea pigs, so that when I buy my Xplorist in a couple months, most of the stuff will be resolved...
  12. I didn't get to go to one because our local group was unable to have one for today, (possibly planning one mid-summer) and the closest group having one was probably an hour and a half away...
  13. I have no intention of throwing away the old one, no matter what. I could probably sell it to a friend for $50... I've heard various stories about Magellan's customer support. Some great, some horrifying. What can I believe?
  14. Last night, I was out caching with my dad, and my dog. I was in a sort of "bunker" type thing. Just a large dug out area at the base of an uprooted tree. My dad was at the top, holding my beautiful golden retriever. My dad took a step towards me to hand me a rock, and my dog, being the ever anxious puppy that she is, shot forward. Pulling my dad head first into my little dug out. He landed directly on my leg, knocking me down. If he had landed just an inch lower, he probably would have dislocated my knee. And we both probably would have been seriously injured. Anyway, I just thought I'd share the back story. Sometime, during the whole falling, toppeling escapade, I managed to crack the screen on my Sportrak. It's probably half the legnth of the screen, but it doesn't look too horrible, but I'm sure the waterproofing is shot. Anything I can do about it? (who knows, maybe this is my justification for buying a new xplorist)
  15. It was an absolutely beautiful weekend in southwestern Pennsylvania. Which is why it was such a shame to be at home, doing yard work. We had planned a little time Sunday to do maintenance, and place a new one, but that didn't quite work out. On the other hand, a coworker of my father who we got interested in geocaching took his daughter out and found their first two on saturday..
  16. I once spent a good 45 minutes, bushwacking to an intermediary stage of a multi. My GPS showed it as only 400 feet from the trail, so I thought I'd risk it. I walked probably a mile through incredibly thick brush trying to get to the cache. Eventually, it thinned out, and I made it to the cache site. I didn't even have to look very hard, it was practically right there in front of me. I looked up, and so was the trail...
  17. *Crocodile dundee voice* " 'ello folks. Today, we're looking at the rare and elusive cache guideline loophole. It's a wild one, but it works like a little charm." *end crocodile dundee voice* Seriously, it looks like it was placed fair and square. But I guess this brings up the debate of whether the distance rule should apply to cameras or the place the cameras take the picture...
  18. Yah, Generally accepted process is to leave the DNF and post your found it log. The DNF logs of the various people who have tried the cache adds character to the cache's story...
  19. Mr. Snazz is just being a dork and playing around... States Geocoins are generally the project of one or more state organizations in the given state. Most states order a sum of maybe 500 and sell them all. Several have actually had several runs of them, but most have had only one...
  20. Mind my asking what that thing is? It looks like a Landcruiser, but it has the Chevy golden bowtie on it?
  21. I've never actually stumbled upon a cache, but I've spent time planning a cache, only to find a cache approved there right before I go out to hide...
  22. My approvere is incredibly friendly and has only once been even slightly rude to me. And that was because I had been incredibly impatient waiting for a cache approval...
  23. The site has an official glossary here. Other than that, just look around in here, you'll be sure to find just about everything that's used by cachers...
  24. I'm part of the "Steering Committee" of our school's new "Bio-Adventures club" We go on hikes, to the zoo, and all kinds of random stuff. I'm trying to get one of the teachers into geocaching..
