Well didn't get to make Spring Fling so I am targeting Return to Healdston the first weekend in June. Hope to make it and meet some more Okie cachers
  2. Hmm not a bad idea! Will have to wander that way and look again since it is close by. Maybe see what I can do about making the jar seal better since the ziplock for the contents apparently wasn't enough. May need to talk to bounty hunter 399 about adopting this one for them if I am a bunch closer to it.
  3. Mater Has gone missing The reason I made Life's A Sand Drag my first cache was to find Mater. Since he wasn't there I watched to see where he turned up next. Now I see a second person didn't find him either. Would someone be kind enough to send Mater along so I can see with his owner if he makes it home?

You need to come to Springfling for a chance to meet many of the other Oklahoma geocachers. It's close to where you. Lake Longmire, near Pauls Valley. Was just looking at that and see I missed out on dates to reserve meals and a T-Shirt. Will try to drop in for part of the day anyway, health willing.
  5. yes and no. Members have convenience features When you download a loc (nonmember format) file you get the basic information of the cache, when you download as a member you have the option of gpx format which has more detail per cache in that given info file. Additionally as a non member if you choose "hide & seek a cache" from any of the geocaching.com pages you are taken to a form to selct your search area, whether you area member or not, then results are displayed in a 10-12 cache per page format. You then can get an loc file for each page to download when you select download waypoints at the bottom of the page. You then have to do this for every page listed until you get all your desired cache listings downloaded then you can always save each cache page to your computer and have the logs that way. As a member you can do that same thing in one shot as a what is called a pocket query and ask for up to 500 separate cache locations in one file as a gpx. Being a member also helps offset the cost of the site maintenance and bandwidth of geocaching.com. Just like you pay for your internet the folks that maintain geocaching.com have to pay for their's as well
  6. What's the difference between d/l for free members and premium members? What will I be able to load to my GPS unit as a free member? What does that enable me to do? Lots of goodies as a member. Pocket queries (PQ), extra cache listed a** member only, Caches along routes, download 500 cache in one shot for an area instead of 10-12 a page and you get the last 4 logs with the download, to mention just a few.
  7. Ah thanks for that tip! The few caches locally had so many finds that the post notice wasn't shown unless I ask for all the logs. Now for the second part any groups closer than Tulsa or OKC? Or are we on our own down here between Durant and Big Mac
  8. thanks for the advice. I finally was able to send the .loc files to my magellan GPS with MapSend Lite. Any idea why I have to reload the "hardware driver" from the Magellan Explorist installation CD each time I attach the GPS to my computer. Thanks Your GPS is a USB device according to Windows. USB is designed basically to be a hot swappable serial device. (USB = Univeral Serial Bus) Windows drops and loads the driver as needed to conserve memory space. Most likely after you used the CD for the driver the first time Windows hardware manager just notifies you of a new device found and auto loads the driver. If you are getting the whole instead window wanting to search drives and internet you may not have admin privileges on your account (name you log in with) on your computer/laptop.
  9. How does one go about finding the reviewer for ones area and are there many cachers near Atoka OK that can help a rookie? I am in SE Oklahoma 3 caches close and from what I can tell the nearest 'group' of cachers in a 'club' is 2 and a half hours drive away at the closest, with the next 2 being 3 hours drive. I would like to expand the area with caches and wouldn't mind having a few I could find as opposed to figuring out where to put them and not getting to participate in the hunt closer to home and especially, meeting fellow hunters
  10. Anymore bargains like this? PM me your store on Ebay. looking to buy now and rather benefit a fellow cacher
  11. I know my Wife Lil'Dreamer does not nor never will she likely want her own account. She refuses to have her own e-mail address and anything she needs done on the computer I do. She has no desire to learn to use one in any form, she doesn't see the point or need. I talked several hours with an experienced geocaching friend then came home and talked to my wife about it as something we could do together, to enjoy pleasant afternoons/evenings. She agreed it sounded like a good idea, so we began by picking up the 3 very nearby caches in our area together. I am not sure she will even continue to do the game if for what ever reason I can no longer do so. Based on knowing what I do about her and your many comments, we can politely stay listed as we are even if I do happen to go more without her at some later date. Now to see about spending some days enjoying the hunt starting tomorrow! Here's hoping the weather co-operates
  12. While reading the cheatinig themselves post I had this question tickle my mbrain Although I may go occasionally without the wife I am always always along when she goes, and sometimes my 7 yo grand daughter goes instead of the wife. Hence "Mad" Dreamer (me) and Lil'Dreamer (wife). Which leads to the question; Should we make seperate ID's here and on the logs found or the way it is now acceptable/honest/fair?
  13. Same here. Although I may go occasionally without the wife she is always along, and sometimes my 7 yo grand daughter goes instead of the wife. Hence "Mad" Dreamer (me) and Lil'Dreamer (wife). Which leads to the question; Should we make seperate ID's here and on the logs found or the way it is now acceptable? And as for poster sayer those with high number of finds in a day are hard to believe, some of us don't really have a life as you suggest
  14. Sometimes I think people don't realize how annoying some caches are. I would have placed a lamppost cache after my experience, but I chose to wait a little while and realized what was good and what was bad. Some people just like to place caches that are quick and easy to find.... It's all about the number for some I suppose How is it all about the numbers if even you liked them well enough that you almost placed one? I don't know about R.O.N. but it didn't take me long to figure out that they had been done to death. Now I just filter out micros. I am sure that I miss out on one or two good micro hides, but I don't waste quality caching time on LPCs. I do have a PQ result in my PDA that includes micros for the days that my wife wants to stop at every shopping plaza. Like I said, it beats watching her pick between two pairs of shoes that look the same to me. Have one of those set up for a jaunt tomorrow that I would otherwise spend my time twiddling my thumbs waiting or comparing shoes
  15. Nope I think he meant screen saver (It would help if I would read the entire post before replying - it was past my bedtime!) Don't feel too bad about it. I've spent the last 8 years trying to get people at work to understand the difference between wallpaper and screen savers. They just don't get it. Of course they seem to want to refer to the computer as the "hard drive" too and I have one user that, after 8 years, still can't grasp the concept of "save as". The other one you have to love is when they want to knnow how much memory you/they have left and they mean how much space left on the hard drive.
  16. Sorry to hear about your invasion. Been there myself a couple of times, the last one took the food and beer and left the valuables except a few tapes. Hope things will settle out soon and you will be able to return to the sport.
  17. I Have and currently use a Magellan GPS 3000 XL I bought new as state of the art when they came out for my boat back in the mid 1990s somewhere along there. Still looks as shiny and accurate with WGS84 as the day I bought it. Got me to near touching distance on the finds I have so far. plan on giving it a full test traveling from Atoka to OKC, checking caches as I go and return next week. Anyone know a free street map programI can refer to off-line
  18. Hmmmmmmmm......... that's how they always show up for me. Newest posts first. Ranger may mean so inside the threads show the latest post on top and as you scroll down they progressively age
  19. Looks like I need to go shopping for map programs then. Thanks everyone
  20. Being an amatuer astronomer and GPS user, there is actually a very limited use for GPS in astronomy. Basically all the co-ordinates do for astronomy devicees athat use GPS is locate the individual person/telescope/device so the correct star map information is loaded into hte computer of said unit. after that other than possible cauual rechecking to make sure it hasnt moved, the gps is basically asleep as it is not needed. As far as location a gps can be helpful in locating a dark sky site for observing, say that out of the way backwood site owned by an astronomy club, then again it would sleep and be used little if at all past programming any computer devices.
  21. I am posting here though not sure if it needs to be here or software. I did as best a search as I can with hte limited search abilities of the forum and came up blank, though many references to part of my question. I have the desktop and a laptop computer and an older Magellan GPS 3000XL. Desktop is XP Pro and laptop is is Vista. I want to be able to download all the waypoints in a given area at one time instead of pages of 10-12 listings and then next page for 35 pages. Ok so some will suggest premium membership. Great. Now for the next part. I like Google maps integration, alas, when on the road without any internet access it is rendered useless. What can I use from the site or elsewhere inexpensively to do both mapping and grabbing new caches in the area I happen to be in as well as marking all the waypoints/locations on the map for me, store them on the laptop and be able to see the map on the now non-internet accessed (while traveling) laptop without investing in costly satellite mobile internet service, thus benefiting from all the wonderful information form Geocahing.com??
  22. I am new to geocaching. I have an old Magellan GPS3000XL. There is actually nothing wrong with it and I have had it since they first came out. Originally used it boating in fact. Frankly if I could get the proper cables to interface with my computer to upload thw cache way[points I would happily stick with my 3000xl. Minor problem. I am now several years older, my multiple sclerosis is not as forgiving as it once was and due to a 1800 mile move in 2003, I have misplaced all the adapters and cables. I sent an e-mail to Magellan and they sent back time to trade in and upgrade, give them a call. So I did, and found out the GPS on their website does not match the versions available for the upgrade trade-in. I was interested in the explorer series, which they informed me they have quit manufacturing, thus being unavailable for the trade-in/upgrade. I can go with the Triton series. Problem is I am not liking the reviews of the Triton series. I like the features of the Triton 500, as I say though the reviews make me wonder if it is worth it. Anyone by chance have the vehicle and data adapters they are willing to sell? Any suggestions as to whether the trade in is worth the risk?
