  1. This is cool, I never explored all the GSAK features before. Took me awhile to discover how to view the various pages. So where do I log my find for GSAK features? From the Green Gables profile page, I don't understand how to "use the batch command facility to load Microsoft Streets & Trips, Delorme StreetAtlas USA, Cachemate and my Magellan GPSr on a weekly basis." Does that mean I can do that in one step, rather than in making the conversions individually, in my case for Streets & Trips, ExpertGPS, Garmin and sometimes MapSource? Is it possible to change the GSAK menu bar to eliminate some buttons that I never use? I'd ask directly, but I figure there must be a few others following this thread that grew up with a typewriter instead of a computer who would like to know....
  2. Hi, I'm a happy non-techie CacheMate user for some months now. I have a Zire 71 and Cachemate makes less paper caching easy. Lately I was out doing a series of 35 birthday micros that turned into hell. After awhile I got confused on which was which, where it was, and why was I doing another 1/1 in the dadgum ivy anyway! What I saw that would be really useful in CacheMate, especially since my caching buddy had it in his new Garmin 60cs, was the ability to show finds by time and date. I like to log them as I find them, and I went through a double zero find while I was doing these. But having no way to determine the order, I didn't know when I got that milestone as I had lost track and didn't realize I was close. I had to break out the pencil and paper and kill some brain cells later to determine the cache. Can I sort by date and time already and am just missing the feature? If not, is that a feature that could be provided in a future release? Many thanks for a great program!
  3. I have just taken over the locationless cache "Cache on the Barrelhead" and posted three new targets. I have also introduced my version of bonus points, and there is a prize associated. Please look at GC4802 if you are interested in that type of cache. If it catches on I will have more targets and prizes on a regular basis. If it is nothing but a pain to run, then I'll go back to the 1/1s in the ivy!
  4. I've checked out most of the ones in the San Jose, CA area. Most have something there that is obviously what they want. A couple have me scratching my head as to what they think is there. This could have been interesting, but with coordinates that are inaccurate, I've decided to pass. Cool prizes, but poorly excuted. As a shameless plug for another type of "prize," I have just taken over the locationless cache "Cache on the Barrelhead" and posted three new targets. I have also introduced my version of bonus points, and there is a prize associated. Please look at GC4802 if you are interested in that type of cache. 5. Thanks fizzy. I'm going to SF in the next couple of days so I'll see what the sites look like.
  6. Is there a way to transfer ownership of a travel bug from one registered cacher to another?
  7. About the time the forums were moved to a new server, I started to notice a consistent and fairly dramatic slowdown in the response of geocaching.com to load cache pages. I don't think it is my end-- I get normal loading and response from other sites I visit regularly-- google, bank, credit card, library, etc. I've also noticed that using the bar at the right to scroll the page doesn't always work. Keys have to be used. Also, often the page will load from now until tomorrow if I let it, but if I click stop, it will generally display-- partially or fully. Anyone else experiencing this? I have Earthlink DSL if that matters.
  8. Hi, I'm not often on the forums, but wanted to chime in for the south bay area from Los Altos to San Jose. Some great parks and caches down here too, and some puzzle ones that will take more like a lifetime, not just a vacation. In regard to travel bugs, Marky always has a bunch for trading if you are down this way. Where do you anticipate being in the bay area? Where are you from in SD? I grew up in Rapid City and get back to the hills most summers for a couple of weeks. Just started caching this year after my visit to the hills, so am looking forward to next summer. Fishin' or cachin' - cachin' or fishin'?? Hmmm....
  9. Anybody going to Australia? I've got TB "Letter to Austraila" that wants to meet its owner there.
  10. Is there a "count function" for the various categories I set up? Didn't notice one in the FAQ. I keep found, owned and a couple of unfound by geographical area and would be interested in knowing the counts. Certainly not a critical item. Thanks for a great program.

I can't open an Adobe .pdf link, but I can open the same file if it resides on my HD and I open Adobe Acrobat Reader first. If I open Adobe Reader first, how do I get to a web URL? Or is that a workaround to another problem that should be fixed?

Upgraded to 2002 hoping for some improvements. Imagine my surprise to find the street I lived on was dropped! Returned it. Didn't look at 2003. I had to reinstall Windows recently, so went scrounging around for my S&T disks. Could only find one and not the one I needed. Bought S&T 2004 with fingers crossed. Fortunately my street has magically reappeared. Overall I don't see any reason to upgrade once you have this program, until M$ does a couple of useful changes to support GPS. Detail that I have seen is not significantly different.

But I just found this http://www.garmin.com/aboutGPS/manual.html Two manuals free for download. on is a beginners guide to GPSing. The other on using your Garmin with Paper Maps. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com "I'd like to buy the world a coke, but I only have fifty cents" Just what I was looking for, but the links appear to be broken. Shucks. I was sitting here wondering if the eTrek I bought last summer (1) came with a manual, and (2) if I registered the unit. Senior moments.
  15. quote:Originally posted by Two Happy Hikers:I am trying to download waypoints to my Streetpilot III with EasyGPS. I am trying to download 500 waypoints and it installs the first 12 then says the memory is full on the Streetpilot. Garmin says that it does not support third party software. Any help will be appreciated. Undoubtably your waypoint memory is full. Clear it and try again. I have the SPIII and it will take 350 (my largest Pocket Query) from EasyGPS no problem. But I have to clear memory everytime I load that large PQ.
  16. quote:Originally posted by smithdw:http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpa02019.html I have seen many ink jet printers that are thoroughly caked with old ink. This will usually help.-Marcus Dolengo WOW! An amazing amount of sludge was built up in the printer. It is really a messy job to clean it. The HP recommendations are good, but I would not use tissue. It came apart too easily and I had to clean lots of little specks off. Gloves are also highly recommended. I didn't and am still cleaning ink off my fingers. Thanks for the tip. It essentially returned this printer to new!

That's why I was asking here. And I have a new HP all-in-one that is very nice. I was hoping to fix the 870 to pass it on to someone or donate it, but I don't want to do either with something that doesn't work correctly. I'll try the second site recommended, thanks.
  18. I have a HP 870Csi injet printer that has been a good one for the last several years. Recently it started printing only partial letters (the middle part being faint) so I replaced the black cartridge. Still a problem. So I replaced the color cartridge, abiet with a "new" but expired one. (Check the expiration date when you buy! The one I got didn't have much time and it sat around for several months.) But the print is black, so the black cartridge should have handled it. Interestingly, the poor print quality shows up on printing cache pages more than say a Word document. I've cleaned the print heads and run the other stuff HP recommends. I'm wondering if I cleaning the rollers might help-- could they somehow not be positioning the paper correctly? Thanks for any ideas.
  19. quote:Originally posted by CacheCreatures: If you ever need more than one or two, I can recommend a card I use all the time for motion control (robots). It only has 64 serial ports though... is that enough? What I REALLY need is a robot that will cache for me? Thanks everyone for your responses. I remember now seeing these serial boards, but had forgotten. And I think I will check into a local builder.
  20. Its about time for a new whiz bang desktop PC. I have two GPSrs and a Palm that use a serial port. I know I can get an adapter that connects them to USB, but I would rather have a serial port for each device if they can be added on. The reason is that the adapters are expensive and not always reliable-- in my limited experience. Plus it is just more stuff hanging on the back of the PC. Are add-on serial ports available? How many ports can be added? Does this make sense? Thanks.
  21. I'd like to check the profile and possibly email someone who has registerd, but never logged a cache. I don't know how to do this, as the search for the user's found caches doesn't return any information that would lead me to the profile page. Thanks.

I got good support on the original StreetPilot, haven't needed it on the SP III, and haven't heard from them on my inquiry on my remanufactured eTrek Vista purchased in July. I thought at one time I had a phone number for Garmin, but apparently not. No response to my email. Anyone go a phone number? [This message was edited by MotorBug on October 07, 2003 at 06:24 PM.]
