  1. Deleted question. Uninstalled GDAK. Not worth the aggravation of the site nor app.
  2. I was wondering about that also. It appears that you have to do all 31 to get the final icon which is different than the one posted on the original collage. I checked a few profiles of people I know who got a cache on the 31st, but not everyday of the month, and they did not get the 31st. Could be wrong about this if servers are slow-- anyone know for certain?
  3. Thanks for all the interesting replies! A no find streak for me of more than a couple of weeks seems unlikely. I like getting out for a cache and many of my friends are cachers. There are also some very good caches around here. I have my own personal challenge of getting 11 caches for every calendar day including February 29th. I would not let a no find streak interfere with that. I'm not a streak guy at all, and this August one has been a little more than what I would call fun truth be told, but just one more day to go. It has definitely been made bearable by a few cachers having short events in the area. Souvenirs are okay, don't really care one way or the other, but I thought there would be a 'prize' from GC or someone would do a challenge about in. In fact there already is in this area. My previous longest found 'streak' was 16 days back in 2005. My longest no find 'streak' was 17 days so really about all I was thinking about was doubling that for the heck of it.
  4. Now that August madness is nearly done I'm looking for my next challenge. A 30 day no find streak seems about right and I have heard there is such a challenge but I am not finding it. Anyone know the GC#?
  5. It worked! Maps unlocked and installed, auto-route working! Now to do a back-up, which I couldn't find. Thanks a lot!
  6. Yes, Garmin City Navigator. I should have said that. I think I might have a backup, I'll check. If not, I appreciate the detailed instructions how to get the maps unlocked. I'll post how it goes. Hope to get to it tonight. Thanks again.
  7. Just updated to 2.9 following all the instructions. All appeared to go well. Now I get the message cannot unlock maps and therefore auto-routing doesn't work. No geocaches or waypoints showed up either, even though they were showing in the file directory while my 30 was plugged in. I cleaned everything out and reloaded from GSAK using a macro. Now have those back, but the maps are still locked. Unless anyone here has an idea how to unlock the maps, I'll call Garmin on Monday. In the meantime, for the cache run tomorrow, I will use my trusty GPSMap 60CSx, the best Garmin I have owned. Thanks for any assistance.
  8. Thanks for your reply. I got them loaded through MapSource. For some reason, I thought on a a USB device the whole map set was loaded from installation like my Nuvi. Instead, the maps were loaded to both MapSource and Basecamp. I've never understood Basecamp fully and preferring MapSource anyway, I used it to load the maps. I really should have know that having Garmin products over the years and a prior 30. I just forgot. A far too frequent occurrence! After I checked and made sure everything was operating normally on the 30 I spent some more time in Basecamp. I find it confusing. I never did find how to load maps from it, either from clicking around or searching help. If you know how I'd appreciate the method. I don't see a 'map selection' tool like in MapSource. Nor do I find the way to modify the tool bar to see if it needs to be installed.
  9. Just tried to install a new copy of City Navigator to my eTrex 30. The installation routine completes okay, says my device is loaded. They do show up in Basecamp but not on the eTrex. I checked in Setup>Maps and it is not showing. I tried to find assistance on Garmin's web site but nothing there about this. So I tried to email them and the page link is broken. They probably wouldn't answer anyway-- I have a couple unanswered inquiries going back months. On My Garmin it says the maps are loaded but I'm not seeing them. I've uploaded City Select or Navigator to many devices but never run across this before. I don't want to load again from the DVD because Garmin gives a one-time update option on initial installation. Any ideas about this? Thanks.
  10. Ammo boxes are the best, IMO. I don't know what is the problem you are having in Spain. Maybe you are getting some that are known rejects. Here is one I found that had been run over, bent to the point I almost couldn't open it, but still nice and dry 4 years later. You may say, "well sure, it's in the Nevada desert," but they have pounding rains and flash floods there a lot. Nice and dry it was! http://coord.info/GL1G4YPF
  11. I'm returning the 2nd eTrex 30 I have had since they came out. This one started acting erratically over the weekend on a road trip. First indicator was several rectangles like a test pattern screen in various colors when I selected the next cache. After that it would shut down every time I selected a cache page description, hint, etc. It required a battery removal to reset. Changed out all PQs, etc, and that seemed to fix it. Today, I tried to load a PQ and when removing from the PC it would not start. Would not accept a master reset. Unwilling to spend any more time on it so returning to REI. Overall I really liked the 30 when it worked. Great size, needed a forward button, but not a deal breaker. Not sure what I am going to get next. Just use my 60CSx for the time being.
  12. My experience with my eTrex 30 is that it is not nearly as accurate with GLONASS turned on. Darn Ruskies are playing games with us no doubt! And it's not quite as accurate as my trusty 60CSx, IMO. But it does have paperless geocaching, which covers a lot of faults.
  13. Be sure that you are confirming that you are "Done" by depressing the rocker with a firm click when it asks you that. I noticed once I didn't when I first got it and missed logging it until I noticed a friend had. So it is a two step process-- "Found" <click> and then "Done" <click>.
  14. Agreed. I'd much rather see half-completed features be completed rather than getting new functionality that nobody asked for in the first place. Some of the things still to be completed or promised a long time ago and still to materialize: -Completion of corrected coordinates -New pocket query form -New GPX schema Are these actually going to happen, or have they become vaporware? Agreed. Please keep this site about geocaching and fix the problems here.
  15. Assuming I understand your questions.... After caching and finding them for the day, hook up your 20 to your computer (PC? Mac?) and open your profile page in gc. Scroll down to "Access Your Field Notes" on the right side and follow the instructions there. That should load the caches you marked found in your 20 into the gc site and you can log from there. That works quite well. Second way, and the one I use almost exclusively, is to "publish logs" in GSAK. If you have a PC and use GSAK you can do a ton of stuff. If you use a Mac I really don't know. I don't use Basecamp so can't say how you might be able to log found caches from it. Having said that, I recall that when you have your 20 plugged in that geocaches should show up. Someone else will have to answer how to log via Basecamp. But I really don't see any reason to. I could be missing something of course. Keep the faith, your 20 will do what you want and you can stop risking your phone to caching activities.
  16. Don't mean to hijack this but since there is discussion about micro SD cards I'll ask my question. I have an eTrex 30 running 2.70. Yesterday I put in a no-name 8GB card I got off eBay and dragged some calibrated park maps from the Garmin>Custom Maps folder to it. First I tried dragging the whole Custom Maps folder with maps, then just the maps. Neither worked. I see the maps in the SD folder but not visible on the screen. They work fine when I leave them in the Garmin>Custom Maps folder. This is my first time using a SD card in any GPS so I am not familiar with the correct way to install. The 30 manual I downloaded is silent on this. Perhaps I have incorrectly assumed that just dragging from Garmin>Custom Maps to the SD card would work? Any assistance is appreciated.
  17. You can get the hint, or partial in the 60 series from GSAK. In the GPS menu tab, in the 'Waypoint Description format' I put %drop2(%typ1)%con1(%dif1a%ter1a)(%hint) This drops the GC in the number and tells me the type of cache, container size and the diff/terrain. What's left over gets the hint. If you were only concerned about the hint, just use %hint and that will give you the hint up to the number of characters allowed, about 50 IRRC.
  18. Agree-- try starting over. I've used Garmins for years and have a new eTrex 30, but still consider my 60CSx to be the better GPS. If it had paperless geocaching it would be darn near perfect. So those caches should be there if you actually downloaded them correctly. If you would say exactly what 'when I send caches from the site to my gps it says successfully sent,' means perhaps we can be more help. As .loc or .gps files one at a time? In a PQ? Maybe do one cache download very deliberately and see exactly what is going on. You possibly could have a bad USB cable although I wouldn't expect to get a successfully sent message in that case.
  19. I'm running 2.70 on my 30 and it is pretty solid. Given that, I'm holding off on the beta versions. Perhaps you can update to 2.7 (from whatever it comes with)and decide if you like that well enough or want to try a beta.
  20. Unless your stuck on the touchscreen feature - I'd go with a Garmin eTrex 30. I'd stay away from the etrex 30 until they fix the bugs. I made that mistake. Garmin eTrex 30. Bugs are fixed. 2nd one for me and not a problem. Firmware 2.7 While nothing is perfect, this thing is now good, IMO. Still, buy from REI and you can return it no questions asked if it doesn't suit you.
  21. Apply the 2.71 beta firmware update and let us know if that fixes things for you. Hope so and good luck!
  22. Yes I see my eTrex now and 'All Files.' I figured out how to see the track info-- properties, elevation, etc. Thanks for the help. That certainly makes Basecamp more useful. I notice you have a Nuvi folder. I've often wondered how to get track info off my Nuvi 500 that has a geocaching mode. I am going to try it with Basecamp.
