  1. Thanks for the information and saving me about $150. I really want the software but not if it doesn't do autorouting. That's one of my favorite features on the V.
  2. Does Maggy Gold do autorouting turn by turn like the V will with the proper map software?
  3. Interesting link but something I would be highly afraid to try. I've got a V and a Meridian Gold. I just really want something that will carry my NC and SC sections of both states for my work. I think I'll look at buying another GPSr for work with more memory. Thanks for the replies guys.
  4. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a way to upgrade the Garmin V from 19MB.
  5. Garmin Mapsource 6.1 LOVE IT! I use this EVERYDAY. I'm not saying that it will put me right where I want to go everytime but it does a pretty good job. I'm a contractor and visit several homes a day. This software has saved me time, gas, and frustration. Map companies don't put every road, street, lane etc. on a map for the simple reason that if someone copies their maps, which are copyrighted material, they can catch them. I don't know from topo maps for GPS. I do know that all topos are based on govt. maps so everyone balances out the same. Hope this helps a little. Maybe, at least, lessen the sting?
  6. Thanks for the info. Why is it that my V gets worse reception than my Meridian Gold in heavy tree coverage. I thought both companies made a comparable product as far as dependability.
  7. Has anyone used a Garmin Foretrex 201? If so what do you think of it? How much RAM onboard? I love my Garmin V for on the road but get much better readings in heavy trees with my Magellan Gold. Just wondering before I even think about buying one. X-MAN
  8. Duracell Ultra. I use them for GPS, Camera and a few other devices. They have a nice long life. When not availabe I use a couple of different types of rechargables.
  9. If you didn't actually find, hold, and open the cache, you shouldn't mark it as a find. If you didn't sign the log book, i think anyway, you can't prove you found it. Play by the rules and go back and sign that logbook. I know it happens 'cause I've done it twice. I don't play this as a numbers game. Great for the folks with over 100, 500, 1000 cache finds. I have never had a hobby this great! This is that little piece of adventure so many of us are missing in our lives. For just a few hours or minutes we get to do something that roughly 90% of the population of the planet doesn't even know about. (OK I know 90% isn't quite the number but you get the idea.) I still consider myself a rookie at caching. I've only been at it for a year. as a matter of fact I just logged my 24th find today. I don't cheat. I do whatever I have to to find a cache though. My first cache I didn't find and I emailed the owner explained that I didn't find a cache. I did find the spot though. The cache was archived the day I went looking. Four hours looking and checking clues. I left what I took to leave in the cache in the spot where the cache was supposed to be. The owner verified with me that I had found the right spot. Did I find it? No, I didn't. That has stuck in my mind since I've started this. The owner of the cache gave it to me and I logged it as a find. I was a newbie and wanted that first find so bad. Actually finding my first cache was one of the coolest things ever.Nixon's Stash Then it was on. My wife and I went caching in the mountains of NC and found her first cache. She was so excited we just had to go for another. We went to Linville Falls. We didn't find the cache. As a matter of fact we fell into freexing cold water and had to hike, I think, two miles back up hill in soaking wet, heavy clothes. Went out and bought dry clothes and then made the two and a half hour drive home. Did we log it as a find? NOPE! Are we going back after it? Well, I am. She says she never wants to see Linville falls again. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the folks that log DNF's as finds are just cheating themselves of a great experience. Thanks to all you guys who think up really creative caches. Not to knock a simple ammo box/jar/tupperware container in the woods either. They are just as fun to find. Oh! Number twenty three was a 5/5 (Tube Torcher). That was an accomplishment that I just can't begin to describe, I am about ready to shed that self imposed newbie status. X-Man Just wanted to add this: July 5 by xxxxxxx (1 found) We found this cache today only because we have a house near the location and a neighbor told us about the cache. We didn't know anything about geocaching.com but are intrigued. We had fun reading the entries. I had read a newspaper article about geocaching a long time ago before I had a GPS but had forgotten about it. Now I look forward to using our GPS to have fun geocaching! This is from the 5/5 I mentioned before. Guys if you ran this cache you would write at least a paragraph on the log. We started this at about 9:00 in the morning and were all over this cache run going back and forth for clues we missed. I'm not saying this guy didn't find it but..... X-Man
  10. I have to say that the Garmin V has been great for on the road. I have used both my Garmin V and my Meridian Gold for caching. The Meridian does much better caching in the woods. I would say, my own personal experience only, that the Gold worked 50% better than the V in heavy tree coverage. On the other hand the V came with mapping software, a dash mount, link cable, batteries, etc. The gold came with an instructional cd-rom and the link cable. For the money the V is your best buy. You can cache with it and still get where you are going. You can also do heavy mapping across several counties. One other thing: the V only has 19 MB of memory. My Gold carries 32 MB coupled with the option of using an SD card. If you've got the money, buy both. X-Man
  11. Okay guys and gals! I just saw the one in Tibet and most of us will never get to go to that one (but it would be awesome.) Tube Torcher in NC is an awesome cache. Took me, Knight Rider, and Askani'Son about 5-6 hours to complete. It was a very well thought out, entertaining cache. We had a ball! If you are nearby, say within a couple of hundred miles, do try it. There aren't very many 5/5's around here. I was just proud to finish it and be able to log a 5/5. Believe me it was a true 5/5! I actually dropped the terrain difficulty on one of my caches after this one.
  12. Do you report these as destroyed? I seem to remeber reading that you shouldn't.
  13. Anyone interested in starting a county Geocachers Association? If not I would still like to meet some local cachers. Feel free to e-mail me. Askani Two roads diverged in yellow wood..... You know, if Frost had been a cacher he would have never have had reason to write this poem.
  14. I have yet to have a problem with mine getting a lock during regular use. Only time I lose signal is while I'm caching in really thick woods. Two roads diverged in yellow wood..... You know, if Frost had been a cacher he would have never have had reason to write this poem.
