  1. I may possibly take that as a compliment. If I'm honest I generally post "mr angry" on this account. C'mon who amongst you have not asked tonight "who's this idiot". It spices things up a little. It's not a sock puppet, I'm a paid up member, but I do cache on a separate account. the_dog
  2. I would be very annoyed if a local cacher tried to remove one of my caches... there are proper channels which should be followed if you are not happy about a cache (most involve a reviewer)... and none of them involve direct action... Thank you. That's part of the point, no notice apart from a terse e-mail stating the removal of the firetacks.
  3. Just because approved vendors sell them does not make them acceptable for application to trees. In any case, in the United Kingdom, and we have to assume that's where your cache is, because it doesn't show on the profile you are using to post here, the countryside code and local law would trump gc.com rules anyway. So, follow your countryside code and all will be well. No problem. Any cache I come across in the future that has firetacks in a nightcache (that are placed in trees) I will remove. You bunch of guardian tree huggers.
  4. Let's assume it's general access land. You really didn't add anything to the discussion, I was asking if there are any general rules about firetacks. OK try this! Just because it is general access land does not give you the right to cause wanton vandalism ... I'm really sorry, but can you please attempt to answer the original question. " Are there any rules about firetacks?". They are sold by GC vendors for the purpose of night caching, presumably most folks will put them in live trees. Ok, you don't like them in your trees, I can appreciate that, but can you please give me a straight answer to a straight question?

  6. Evening all. You know those reflective pins you can buy to use for helping directions to a night cache, yes. Well I've used them once, and placed them in a live tree, as opposed to a stake or fence post. Granted some sap did leak from the pins, and I would rather put them on dead wood, but are there any rules? I have a local cacher that is intent on removing these pins and consequently destroying the cache approach....
  7. Surely this off topic subject should have been closed by now. Great picture of the bird in the fishnet top BTW.
  8. Is this another "I hate micro's thread?". Please let me know....
  9. Sound like you have a set-up very similar to mine. I also have gpxsonar, and have used spoliersync to generate spoliers from a gpx file containing over 14,000 caches. The result is less than 1,000 spolier photos, and it really wasn't worth the effort. (This is just my opinion, if I can't find it in under 3 minutes I'll generally move on.) Mostly, I use GSAK to output a TomTom file that includes the hint (%hint), and also send the hint to my GPS. Very occasionally I'll boot up the PDA to view the cache page. Paul
  10. I think the Rat was a little miffed at the abusive e-mail, which would have made Chubby Brown blush BTW, but he's also reducing his cache maintenance in general (he had 50 including adoptions). He's a laid back guy and whilst he has all the IT skills necessary to secure the senders IP, he really isn't that bothered. Now get some more flippin' caches out mate! and they'd better not involve c@mping, night time, or boats.
  11. what! you didn't have a spare micro in your pocket, what with all the muggle activity 'n all. Good effort on the DNF. Personally I'd have said "found remains of old log book, stuffed into ration empty pack and replaced. TFTC"
  12. I'd be surprised if any canal path caches have approval. I could be wrong though.
  13. 'scuse my ignorance, but what is a flash mob event?
  14. wack 'em up to 100 psi to save fuel. (Joke of course, assuming your OP was of the same nature). edit on original post : why on earth would I add a disclaimer to a jovial post???
  15. I know of a TB called "slim bug", where the owner cut the dog tag down on one edge to allow it to fit in micro caches. (35mm)
  16. Doesn't #3 do that? In reference to the TOMTOM html, I did see a vague reference to this on a US forum. However it involves changing your menu setup, and wasn't particularly great at explaining the procedure. I only use my TOMTOM for drive by caches when I'm out for work, so the GSAK set up is fine for me, just need the hint really, not the cache page.
  17. I don't entirely understand your post I'm afraid. On the picture below, #1 shows how to export with different icons, specifically showing micros, and #2 shows one of the options for text to show on tomtom. This text will only show if you go to "browse map".
  18. If you do use GSAK to export a customised (list of caches you want) then Big Wolf has written an excellent macro for GSAK which displays the cache type icons on the TT screen. You can get the macro (and others) here. Chris (MrB) Not sure if you've quite got the link correct.... bigwolf tomtom export
  19. I'd love that link, but the site's been down for weeks now. I've been downloading a large number of PQ's, then using GSAK to merge the DB's, then using the TT macro to export the data. If you travel a lot for work it can be useful for cache and daches if you put the following codes in the export options. %Name - %Hint - %con1 - (D%dif-T%ter) Should result in something like "Boyz Toyz #1 - Under a rock - R - 1-2" So name of cache (use %code if you want the GC number), un-encrypted hint, one letter for size L/R/S, and difficulty/terrain. My Tomtom appears to have a maximum number of characters that display, so it might truncate the text. Choose wisely. Regards.
  20. You'll need GSAK, and the tomtom macro that exports the cache data. You can configure it to get a different icon for each cache type. In the config options you can put in code that shows the cache GC, real name, and the hint. In POI description type %name (%code) - %hint this will show up on Tomtom as "The big cache (GC12345) - Under the bridge" I haven't figured out if it's possible to store and retrieve the cache HTML data on Tomtom, so I use my PPC. For co-ordinates you need to go to "browse map". Tap the top right corner arrow to centre on your current position if necessary, then tap on the cache icon. That'll show the co-ords on the bottom left of your screen, and the cache name and hint as described above. GSAK has it's own support site and forum, that lists all the macros. Paul
  21. Mine does this occasionaly, though not sure if there is a specific "causal action". New batteries normally does the trick, even if you think you've just used fresh ones.
