  1. If someone who wants to publish a possibly commercial cache has to request permission from TPTB themselves because the reviewers have no say then shouldn't everyone have known that the owner wasn't being truthful when he said that he'd discussed it with the reviewer and the reviewer got it approved? Or can the reviewers request that someone's possibly commercial cache be published?
  2. I was wondering the same thing. We've got lots of small promo swag at work... golf balls, tees, tape measures, calculators, etc. that I considered using for caching.
  3. I think I'd leave the note and try to talk to the residents of the house adn explain the situation. There's a chance that they are the ones who took it, and even if they aren't you'll know for sure whether they're okay with having a cache placed behind their fence should you decide you want to replace it.
  4. I haven't hidden any caches yet, but I think I'd have to agree with you here. I could see maybe getting a bit irritated if it was in a really difficult location, but the description and the logs both say it's easy to get to and I certainly hope people don't place caches that are valuable enough to matter if they disappear. If there is a restriction against placing caches on "highway bridges" then how did this one make it past review? Google earth shows it as being right on the bridge, and the bridge is clearly marked as being a federal highway. The sat image doesn't show the bridge surface because of the superstructure, but there are tons of vehicles on the approaches.
  5. I've been NikkiPoooo for everything internet since I got my first AOL account back in '94. I originally picked the oh so creative NikkiPoo, but amazingly that was already taken and rather than having numbers that would not mean anything to anyone else after it (and have people get it wrong all the time) in my 13 year old wisdom I decided to just max out the characters with o's. That did not eliminate the "spelled your name wrong" problem... imagine that?
  6. I like the idea of new socks in a good sized cache. I'm a nature girl, but I really can't stand to have wet socks on. A couple of pairs of inexpensive gardening gloves would be another good idea, or a can of Wet Ones. Full size flashlight maybe? Travel umbrella? Bottles of water? Cheap kitchen towels? These are things that I pack in my caching bag, but might be nice finds for someone who's forgotten something.
  7. So, you could still have the same experience if you decided not to hunt the newer caches (which, according to the logs are actually being enjoyed by many people), but instead you're choosing the "changed but not for the better" experience in order to scold people for doing something that's well within the guidlines but you personally don't care for? Have you ever heard the expression "you cut off your nose to spite your face"? And what about the people who decide to go for God's Eye View, but overestimate their own capabilities and realize halfway up that they just can't make it this time? Now they don't have to feel that the trip was a total wash, and can still go away with a positive memory which just might be the deciding factor in whether or not they try it again.
  8. It's US-61, and from the looks of the bridge images on google earth it carries quite a lot of traffic.
  9. On the 4 I've tried I only used the hint once, when I got to ground zero and there were a metric ton of likely places. Two of them didn't have hints anyhow, including my one DNF.
  10. I had a decent Magellan customer service experience today... "Dave" had a very thick accent but after a few miscommunications was able to answer my question and tell me exactly how to project a waypoint on my explorist 500.
  11. Congratulations! I found my first this week also.
  12. Luckily I've got the nephew to be my beard for kid-oriented site, though he would probably sell me out if he thought it would mean he'd get to find it before me!
  13. I've got a 500LE and while I don't have anything to compare it to I do like it. The geocache manager software that comes with it is easy to use, though I prefer GSAK.
  14. I'm still working my way through a bootbox (from big old LaCross all weather boots... it's BIG) of 35mm film I found at my parents' house when they were moving. Most of it is from the late 80s to early 90s and I've yet to come across any that didn't develop at all due to deterioration and I know that a good 2 dozen or so rolls were rescued from the 1977 motorhome they sold in '97 so they were not stored in anything like ideal conditions... we lived in mid-Michigan so it got pretty hot and humid in summer and darn cold in winter.
  15. I had considered the flash memory idea for my first hide... I'd put several different types of cards in and anyone who had a digital with them could take a picture with their own camera and put it back but I wondered if the cards would disappear.
  16. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...ba-9edfe23f230e The finds were logged just like any other cache though it appears to have gone missing over a year ago.
  17. http://www.csgnetwork.com/gpscoordconv.html has converters for all three types of coords.
  18. Well, I should clarify... we never did find the Moon Landing cache, but we did find two today. We found the Bloomer Park one and this one: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...64-b967ba541975 and had a blast doing it.
  19. What a coincidence that I watched about 6 hours of Monty Python yesterday, and was jsut about to watch the last 4 episodes of Torchwood. It's not comedy, I know but it's still really good.
  20. So the nephew and I decided to have another go today, and we tried the one Webscouter suggested... WE FOUND IT!
  21. Well, it's pretty effing cold today, and my nephew heard us talking about geocaching last night so maybe we'll give this one another go today since the ground is likely to be firmer. I'm taking him to the Detroit zoo and there are a series of caches there too so I think we'll try for those too.
  22. Well, a combination of things kept me from really searching for this one today... first: the only places to park are very soft and muddy and I was worried my car would get stuck if I actually stopped the car so I just pulled back onto the road and second: it felt really exposed because there's a house across the street just facing the lot. I think I'll have better luck searching for one in a park.
  23. Well, it's here. So far everything's working as it should. I was able to load the latest firmware, and have loaded a PQ into the geocache manager. So far so good, but I'm still in the office.
  24. It's here... I've loaded the latest firmware update, and it fixes position really quickly. It definitely points in the right direction, and it's set on WGS84. Anything else that needs to be done to set it up properly?
