  1. I know this is an older post...but do you know if Wally World still has this deal?? shadango
  2. Ok...I follow you.... I just found the place on the site and ordered my update disk. I would agree, though, that $75 is a bit high, considering that there are so many errors in the v5 maps, at least around my area.... But I guess it will be worth having the new data.......Hopefully it will be worth it..... $75 dollar bills are hard to come by these days....
  3. I am a little confused and hope somone can help.... I had heard rumours about v6, so I went to the Garmin site and went to maps..... http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 I downloaded and installed the v6.03 update and it looks like the software updated just fine.... So, are the maps actually seperate altogther????
  4. Actually, I have bought batteries at the dollar store for my GPS........I have bought the panasonics and they work fine.....seriously. Like anything else, you hafta watch the brand and freshness.... I have bought coppertops that seemed to wear out awefully quick.....
  5. I have my boots for work other wise I would not have them, I know if you are an avid runner you should replace your shoes once every 3-6 months, is that practical? not really. i have had apair of New Balance runners for over 2years ya they are not falling apart nor even look old but when I do run in them my lower back hurts and so do my knees, and I am only 25 years old, the padding braeks down inside the shoe where you do not see it. No, I cant afford to replace shoes every few months.....I know runners that do though...... I hear you on the running/pain thing....at 34 I was 315 pounds at 6'2".....I decided to lose the weight and started walking everyday.....after a year I had dropped 75 pounds or so and was walking 3.5 miles a day, and was wearing Adidas Cross Trainers......they were fine....then I started running a few days....2-3 miles....and walking the rest.....worked my way up to running 3.5 a day.....Knees and hips started hurting..... So, i went out and bought some Adidas running shoes (about $75)and while I was more comfortable while running, I still had knee and hip pain.....Well, I backed off to just running 3.1 miles on a bike path with uphills and downhills and then a half mile cooldown walk during the week, and then 3.5 miles running on a flat course on Saturday and Sunday....I found my pain subsided a bit....My running shoes are about 4 months old and showing signs of the soles wearing out but they still give good support I think.....Have lost another 15 pounds since, 1.5 years after I started.....I think al ot of my pain is simply due to the fact that I was really overweight for so long.... Now, I just used my bike on a cache, after not riding it for over 10 years....I think I did about 10 miles total..... and my hips and knees have hurt like crazy for the last couple days...... Nothing to do with the shoes there.....just my age and previous damage I guess.
  6. Well, I don;t know if the water caused it (I had worn them in other muddy/water situations before and noticed no issues) or if I used too high a heat setting on the dryer..... And before I get jumped on with "Well then you shouldn;t have taken them back" well, I did......I figured to err on the side that says they may have been defective to start with as I have dried boots/shoes like this before with no problems....... The boots themselves fit well and are very comfy....hence my getting a replacement pair. If these second ones fall apart then I can return for a refund....nothing lost, and I have hiked several hikesalready in them..... shadango.... I what happen if the boots fail in and you are injured as a result and cannot hike out. then you end up paying for emergancy personel to get you to a hospital. A real pair of boots would have saved you a lot more money. Boots are the most important item when you are hiking. You will neve get quality boots at Wally World types of retailers, You have to go to a Back Packing specialty store, in person. Plase like Big 5 and sports mart are not Back Packing specialty stores. Go read the article I wrote for todays geocacher. Well, its not like the whole boot disintegrated either.....The rear part of the sole seperated from the show....about 98% of the sole was still attached.... I am not climbing the faces of cliffs in them or travelling 400 miles into the wilderness with nothing around.....so, even if one of them failed "catastrophically" I dont think it would be a life-threatening kind of thing...Uncomfortable, I am sure, but not life threatening..... Regardless, I guess time will tell.....Like I said, if the second pair fail, I will know they are junk... But I have bought many pairs of shoes and boots in my life and I have had $100 running shoes die in 3 months whereas $20 running shoes lasted a year.....I am no longer convinced that $$$ = quality. I buy my motorcycle riding boots at Walmart. They run about $30 a pair.....I wear the soles out before anything else happens to them (I drag my feet alot on the bike).... To be honest, I got into caching becuase, for one thing, its a cheap sport I can enjoy with my kids.....If I have to spend $400 for a pair of shoes to do it I guess I will have to give it up...

  8. I was using the version that came with the reciever, version 5.... I did the upgrade to v6 online and the street I live on is STILL reversed...or maybe this just updated the software and not the maps...?? How do I know if the maps have been updated???
  9. My entore street is reveresed too.....I have to wonder what the mappers are doing when they are getting the info together.....My guess is they have a lot of snack attacks...... shadango
  10. I know this was more directed toward caching, but I think that this is a great comment...it indicates the situation the whole world is in. Everyone is so worried about the other guy and having things done the way they want it done.... Why cant we all just sit back and let folks do whatever as long as it isnt causing us direct harm and roll with the changes?? I used to ride my ATV every weekend...that was my hobby....until people started complaining and landowners started posting signs etc....Idiots who got hurt on them sued and now everyone is running scared....Now, in order to ride legally in my state, you have to register the ATV and ride only on state approved trails....those are 3 hours away from me. So, my hobby sits in the shed. If people would just mind their business and do what is right we would ALL be better off.....There's an old saying that goes like "Be careful what you demand to have regualted...the next thing regulated might be something YOU enjoy"...Ok, not an old saying, just made it up... But an old saying (that is really an old saying) fits well....."I am not my brothers keeper." That, I think says it all.
  11. Oh, a case where the tree pushed back, eh??
  12. If you ever had someone rear-end you or otherwise crash into you while driving an SUV you would change your theory. True, some folks are just thick......and SUVs are NOT sports cars and cant be driven like sprots cars.....But if driven as intended a crash in an SUV is much safer than in a econobox.
  13. Actually, I bought a pair of "Bandits" made by Ozark Trail at Wally world...for $20 not too bad.....I have walked miles and miles in them and been pretty comfy...those, coupled with a pair of extra thick wicking hunters socks and my feet are comfy......They are waterprooof, so they say...though NOTHING is waterproof if completely submerged... The boots held up pretty good until I walked through one of QUestmaster's water hazards and used the dryer on high heat to dry them out fast,...the rear sole of one seperated (glue came undone)......Got a second pair and so far so good.....though it has only been a couple weeks.....I am hoping they hold up, even for a year...then get another pair.... Definately not high-end boots, but they are lightweight, comfy (so far) and seem to hold up OK (except for the dryer incident).... shadango
  14. As a newbie, I am still learning the "trade up, even or don't trade" concept.... For instance, I have traded everything from playdough to cheap cars to hotwheels/matchbox cars, to ceramic figurines, to McD toys (new), to Mellon Arena/Penguins swag......Now, the cheapie cars were like 5 for $1....the Matchbox cars are about $1 each....the Mellon Arena swag, some of it was selling for as much as $15.00 each (I get it much much cheaper)...... I have seen some nice stuff in caches and some bad stuff...... One cache had nothing other than paperclips and binder clips in it......you can imagine Tyler's (5) and my face when he saw THAT stuff.....in that instance we definately traded up...left things like cheapie cars and playdough.... Another cache we were FTF and took a bota bag...but nothing really kid related....Tyler wasn't pleased but i was.....left Mellon Arena swag..... On another, it was all stuff like marbles and GI Joe men and such......I wasnt crazy about the swag but Tyler and Dylan (2) were ecstatic! Left more Mellon Arena swag..... I guess the point is, determining "what is good swag" is as difficult as figuring out the "WOW" factor I read so much about...... Empty cig packs and such though is an obvious no-brainer..... But in the end, we enjoyed each and every cache...just becasue we found it and had a good time doing it..... I loved walking away with a bota bag, but had it been a cache full of cig butts I would have enjoyed the cache just as much.....would have been irked by the rudeness of whomever left butts, but still would have enjoyed the experience.... So, hopefully, the trades my sons and I do won't irk anyone..... Can't please everyone all the time though.... shadango

    Server Too Busy

Same here...very very slow.... It took 4 tries to upload my latest log for a cache..... And then when it went thru it double posted....Trying to delete now.
  16. My company is faced with the same thing...many folks are working from home or other locations and staying away from the action......just easier to avoid than deal with it..... shadango
  17. That isnt because they are afraid of terrorist threats...Its just that they are afraid that the people attending the convention might catch a glimpse of a paper and find out what is happening in the real world versus what the pundits are saying is happening.... This is also going to be done at the RNC...... neither side wants reality to come thru during their brainwashing...er...rallying. reality is a terrible detriment to politicking's cause.
  18. After the first time, I would have bought a lock and cable and locked my bike to a tree, etc......that way, someone who meantwell would be advised that teh bike was put there on purpose....ift would also keep a thief from stealing it as easily.... I like the "code" you speak about in Japan...but lets face it, in todays world there are three types.....ones that steal, ones who will "take care of" someone else's belongings for them if found, and those who dont care and leave it alone altogether. Leaving your bike unattended and unlocked was asking for one of the firstt wo to get involved....the lock would have let folks know it was meant to be left there..... A few weeks back , I was caching and came across a used backpack ....All the zippers were opened and all that remained wasa hairbrush.... It was obvious to me that it had been stolen from someone and left there after being looted. I am using the backpack on my hikes now with good concience. I *am* sorry that the original owner lost his/her backpack...but ya know what??? It is likely that they would never find it again anyways..... Another time, we were stopped at a gas station vending machine before caching,....stuck money in for one bottle of soda....4 came out....AND the machine returned my money. I pocketed the change and the sodas.....why?? Because I have been screwed DOZENS of times over the years by vending machines....You could look at it two ways -- 1) I stole pop/money that wasn't mine or 2)karma had come around and returned part of my previous losses to me.... I prefer the latter. As far as the money goes, it was obviously HIDDEN by someone......that makes it a little foggier.....don;t know what I would do....if it ever happens (and I pray it does) I'll cross that bridge when it comes... I lean towards the idea of leaving a note to go to the police....tell the police you have found "something" and tell them where and how to contact you...if someone happens to get a hold of them and then they to you, and describe the money and location, then return it via the police...if not, keep it. Now, the police MIGHT have a different idea and push you to turn in the item in question.....no idea what to do then...you might be opening up a can of worms.....as others have stated. Ah, money...it makes life SOOOOO complicated.
  19. How does one get the v6 updatefor the maps??? I went online and got the update for the program and the prgram itself updated but it didnt seem like I got any new map data.... Or do I have to buy the CD or something???
  20. A little Ot, but I have had some issues with my CitySelct software that came with my Garmin V as well.... For instance, the address numbers on my street are reversed up and down the street......on one cache a week ago, I was instructed to ride down a street where there was now...when Itried to recalculate it looped me back onto that same street....found my way out, but it was a pain.....was on vacation last eyar and many of the restaurants, etc listed in the software were no longer there....bulldozed or different businesses altogether.... My question is, does Mapsource EVER bother to update the maps and if so how can we get the updates???? Ididnt buy a GPS so I can gues if the map is right or not....I can do that with paper maps... DZ
  21. Hey there! I am somewhat new to caching and ride as well.....I have a Shadow...87 VT1100c..... I would be interested in conversations on this topic, though I havent cached with my bike yet.....Dont like to leave it alone in strange places too long....Use the GPS alot for riding though...I can just aim the bike and go and use the GPS to get me home....
  22. I have done 31 caches so far...a couple last year and then a hiatus....did the last 28 or so in the last few months......Have done them all (aside from a few lunchtime micros) with my son Tyler, who is 5......Have taken my wife and 2 year old Dylan on a few.... Just yesterday I took the two boys on one that was rated 1.5/1.5....to be honest, it should be rated a little higher on the terrain....and having the 2 year old with us slowed us down some....but it was fun and they both had a blast! It was in the woods and there was some scrambling over logs and such, into ravines and back out.....lots of overgrowth....no way a stroller could do it....Icarried Dyamn for some parts of it which made the terrain harder for me.... Tyler is an AMAZING hiker...not quite 5 yet (6 more weeks) we have been doing 3 or 4 in a day, two days in row.... The key is keep their minds on the treasure and the fun they are having.....
  23. I love it! You sneaky booger you!
  24. Actually there is a difference. RR tracks are private property. Many reservoirs are private property as well, owned by the city/borough etc it is in...at least here in Western PA. .....many of them are posted no trespassing.....some you can fish in, but not swim...some you can hike near but not fish, etc.... Gotta be stealthy when you access them. Some are, but the reservoir in question here is open for recreational purposes, like boating, sailing and fishing. Very true.....I noted that in my post.....some are...but again, many (in my area at least) that are open for these activities are still posted as private property and therefore would technically require permission......just becasue boating/fishing is allowed doesnt mean caching would be...and therefore would still need permission, wouldn't it??? Or does thefact that it is open to the public for other uses make it ok to place a cache?? If this ist he cae, I have some new ideas for local caches! I was under the idea that if an area is posted as "private property", permission must be asked for and given before the cache will be approved anyways...so if they had placed the cache without permission, it is likely that the reviewer would have known that area is private and would have rejected it anyway..... I guess it all depends on how "private property" is defined and whether it is publically posted as such.....for instance, you couldn't place a Cache in Disney World without permission, though this is a VERY "public" place...or at least I wouldn;t think so.... ??
