    New Bug

Just got my first travel bug in the mail last night and I have activated it today. Just want to share my idea. I am going to get a total of 3, one for myself, my wife and my son. (We are known as Team V3 for our finds and hides.) Mine I have attached to a Johnny Lightning collectible car. It is in the form of a classic school bus done up black with the logo and artwork from Iron Maiden's "The Number Of The Beast". I have called it "If This Bus Is A Rocking..." <tracking number removed by moderator> You may check out the mission for it if you'd like. When we receive the other two, my wife and son will do theirs and we plan on having a sort of race with them. Anyone else tried doing this with family/friends and how well did it work? Honestly, I am not depending on these hitting every place in the mission. It would just be fun to see where they go and how long they circulate.
  3. Ahhhh fresh meat....I mean a new cacher!!! Welcome aboard!
  4. There once was a man from Nantucket. His cache was a 5 gallon Bucket He said with a grin, While putting travelbugs in I hope no muggles will chuck it. Hehehe I tried.
  5. I honestly think that one of the BEST things about geocaching is that it means different things to different people. Some people are all about the numbers, some aren't. Some are FTF nuts, some aren't. Honestly, if I did get a FTF I think it would be cool, but I am not going to necessarily rush out as soon as I get a notification (unless it indicates its right down the street). What it really comes down to is this. Are FTF hounds really harming the sport or others? Nope. Are people harming the game by being numbers driven? Nope. Just let people lay the game to their own level and with their own goals.

    Useless Hints

Hehehe I am guilty of that one.
  7. First of all, don't stress. This is a game and is supposed to be fun. If you stress too much, you will burn out on it. As mentioned previously, micros can be VERY tough to find especially for someone new to the game and NOT using a GPS. For a while I detested micros. I will still choose a larger cache over a micro if there is one in the area. Here is a story that might help..... We (me, my wife and son) were looking for a micro that was part of a series. We spent a while looking for it and having NO luck. We moved to another one in the same series and found it. The good thing was that we knew more what were looking for. We went back to the first one and I found it pretty much instantly. My point is that sometimes you need to step back and come back with a fresh outlook on it. DNFs are not always a bad thing and sometimes I think they should be called DNFFNs (Did Not Find For Now).

  9. Very cool. We (me , my wife and son) love the designs on these coins. We do not have any as of yet (we never find one that is unactivated) but I would love to collect them. Would love to see more about this as the work progresses.
  10. Considering how many caches are just placed at the side of the road or on a sign post, yours sounds very creative. Not saying anything is wrong with the side of the road ones in my eyes. Its just not CREATIVE.
  11. It also seems like coins travel more overseas without getting stolen if you can get one over there. So cachers in the USA are simply more dishonest than people in other countries? Oops...did I just say that? Yes you did say it.....and I must say you are probably right. Actually, as far as manners and ethics go, there are MANY countries who put us to shame....or shall I say WE put ourselves to shame compared to many other countries.
  12. Such a shame. I would love to see a good geocaching magazine. Well the sport does seem to be growing so maybe someday there will be a reputable one. I personally do not subscribe to anything before I can try it out.
  13. Don't sell yourself short..... Maybe the hiders are getting better.
  14. I'd take it so I can add on to my subscription I have now and save me some on renewing. (Which I do plan on doing).
  15. There are MANY faces to geocaching. Some are simply "get the coordinates, find spot, search for cache". Others you do have to solve a puzzle to get the right coordinates. Others still you have to do tasks a little more challenging to get the find such as mountain climbing, scuba diving, etc. The fun thing is that different people hide caches in different ways. Also it brings you to new areas sometimes. These areas could be right in your neighborhood and you did not know they existed. It has gotten me to walk a lot more too. Being diabetic that is a very good thing. Once my son gets back in school (next week) I know what I will be doing on days that I have the time to myself.
  16. Man can you say ungrateful? Even if someone gave me a GIFT I would not use, I would still say thank you and move on. And what is the rest of that all about?? ""I even paid for my house with cash".....like we really care about that. Shouldn't it say "with cache"??
  17. That is so 2 years ago. The new eTrex H series units will get a lock regardless of the position. The lock is best when it's held flat, but when I'm looking at my GPS it's usually pretty flat. The helix antennas work best when held vertically but when I'm looking at my unit I'm not holding it vertically. Actually these days the differences between antennas are inconsequential. Judging from everything I've read in the other forum, I wouldn't. Just stupid things like not being able to delete a geocache waypoint without loading a new file would drive me bananas. It's hard to find a better unit than the 60CSX. If you want GPX capability from what I've read the Oregon is better than the Colorado, but I'm waiting for the South Carolina to come out. You are corrected. The 60CX has expandable map memory and a high sensitivity receiver in addition to the color display. They are vastly different units. I have a a 60CS and the 60CSX and the difference between the two is like Biden and Obama. Well thank you for that bit of information. So it is just the Map60CS that is very similar to the map 60 and the CX is the next step to that?
  18. I am relatively new to the game and the world of GPS myself. However, I use a Garmin GPSmap 60 and it seems to work well for me. I got it at a very good price and though it is an older model, it has proved to be pretty accurate. It does not have some of the "cooler" features such as color screen but for an entry unit I have been very content and many people still seem to feel that it is a decent model. I may be mistaken but I believe the main difference between the map60 and map60cx is the color display. In most other respects they are very similar. However, if I am wrong please correct me.
  19. The thing I like about this game is that each person can choose how competitive they want to make it. Some people have the attitude that they want those numbers and while its not me (yet) I do not think there is anything wrong with competitiveness. It would be interesting to see what kind of other games they could develop using stats.
  20. We have found 12 to date. Only been doing this for a few months now. I find that even ones listed as easy sometimes take a while to find. Some I have had to go back a few times. I have felt that as we have been doing this our "geo-sense" has become more tuned. You start looking for certain patterns and objects. Trust me, you'll notice it too. I start looking at around 30-50 feet (generally). You need to remember that it does not just depend on the accuracy of your GPSr, but also the person who hid the cache. How accurate was THEIR GPS. Did they actually use the waypoints for the specific localtion or the general area? There are many factors involved. Within time, you will establish your own way of looking that will work for you, but even veteran cachers do occasionally have to know when to let it go and move on.
  21. I have like 1368 around me (within 40 miles). Not that I find it a big deal.
  22. YUP, contact the owner. I solved a puzzle the other day this way. I had many of the things I needed, but was just one step out. After the return email, I had what I needed. Another puzzle was missing one thing, I just got what I needed on it too! Its not help so to speak, but more a NUDGE... finally worked it out went and sat near the coords for 3 hours and finally just sudenly dawned on me. if anybody is curious as to the answer if they pm me i can tell them its so obvious once you get it (if your at the place that is) I don't think the cache owner would appreciate that.
