  1. The company I work for (which should remain nameless but they are very much into the outdoors and are based here in Maine) has outdoor discovery days every year where employees learn about various outdoor activities. Geocaching has been one of the activities for the last couple of years. I first attended the presentation a couple of years ago. It was a short little session where they hid something on site and gave us all simple yellow etrexs. (The early ones that don't even hook up to the PC if I remember right). I had been wanting to try it more ever since and this year I begged and pleaded with my wife to buy a GPSmap60 that we saw at a decent price. I have found it to be an awesome family activity.
  2. Doubt its a winner...... Stryper/Loudness/and TNT. Yeah I know.... Yes....I said Stryper You can stop laughing now.
  3. Now that would be great...but no. Don't know if it is a "hint", but I'm returning home on Monday. Won't be gone long/long enough... You are going to go to church in another state.
  4. I guess I have yet to find a need to carry a gun while caching. A knife I can understand for branches but I have yet to be attacked by any rabid tupperware containers. Seriously though, to each his or her own and it is not my intention to start a debate.
  5. I just hope nobody comes up with a cache based on the movie Titanic.....uuggh that movie was highly overrated.
  6. Go right ahead - we all do it shamelessly from time to time. For those who missed the Waypoint number the cache I referred to is "Rest Your Bug Here". I thought that was pretty unique.
  7. Well here then... Check out the name on this one.... Just so you know, I had nothing but clean intentions when I named it but when I tell people I get quite a few snickers and even a few blushes... GC1J8TX
  8. With all of the caches in the world, coming with something that has not been used is very difficult. I think the title on my last one was pretty original if I can toot my own horn. However, I will not post the name in here only because it seems to me it is against forum policies to push your own cache in the forums.... or am I wrong??
  9. My main resolution is to start taking better care of my diabetes. With this I plan on caching more. I also plan to try to make our 100th find before my 38th birthday in March. We are at 30 now. I think it is quite doable.
  10. What it comes down to is that most retailer do charge some kind of restocking fee when it comes to high tag electronics. (Even moderate ones). This is for the reasons mentioned previously. Also what a lot of people forget is that when you are in the retail industry, you are in the business of making money. (or trying to) Though it is important to have policies that are fair, you need to keep profits in mind.

    TB Newbie

I thought so, but wasn't 100% sure. thanks very much for the swift response. My 1st TB will be going on it's merry way very soon, you never know, one day you may even discover it. Don't expect a lot of miles right away either. At least here in new england thins seem to slow down a little this time of year. But the first time you see it move is a pretty cool feeling.
  12. I take into effect about 6 months of visiting Florida over my ~50 years of life in my 'life' centroid. But that only amounts to about 1% of about 1200 miles so it's only about 12 miles. I expect my 100+ cache finds in Canada and dozen finds around DC to not impact my approximate 2200 finds centroid in the least. I just have to do the true conversion to UTM (and somehow account for different Zones) to calculate the real centroid. Lat/long is just non-Cartesian enough to make simple calculations almost meaningless. Pretty cool but when I look at my finds PQ under name it says something other than my cache name. It says something like mmface(???) Also it says I have something like 150 logs. The finds number is correct though. Any ideas?
  13. How? Give us the details and we'll check it out to see if it's something to be concerned about. just kidding. If you've found a bug email Groundspeak at the contact@ address and let them know. I know of two methods to get the coordinates for an unpublished cache. But in either case all you can get is the coordinates. One method involves triangulation and can be used (only in specific cases) to estimate the coordinates to within a few hundred feet. Another method is a site loophole which will return the exact coordinates if you know the GC code. I have never use either method to locate a cache. And no, I will not reveal them to anyone except an admin/moderator, no matter how nicely you ask. Place a bug in one of those unpublished caches and see how quickly it gets found before it gets published. Thats why I never place any bugs in caches before they are published. I heard of that issue happening.
  14. Welcome to the world of caching. Now, be prepared to get "the look" when you try to tell people about your new obsession and get it even more sometimes when you are out looking. In any case, it is fun. Regarding your first GPS, I use a Garmin GPSmap60. It is an older model but it does what I need it to do. I had to beg with the wife to get it for a fathers day present because I wanted an entry level unit so we can try caching with the family. We are still relatively new ourselves (started this summer). Our caching name is actually Team V3. Good luck on the trails and keep caching!
  15. Personally, I feel that if your life is so empty that you have to find ways of cheating to get a image of a smiley on a map on a website, I feel bad for you. Not that I don't like the smileys, just its not the driving force behind the game. The finding of the cache is.
  16. There is a flip side.... I can think of more than a couple of relationships that have broken up as a fairly direct result of geocaching and geocaching events Know what you mean here Jon, my thought on this, is don't let others interfere, just keep your relationship personal to yourself, and DON'T let caching get in the way. The difference between ANY relationship and geocaching is that when you have a puzzle cache, ALL of the puzzles can eventually be solved.
  17. I think it is well worth it. Its nice to be able to plan a route when we go on a trip. And we are not even power cachers.
  18. I like it. Very clever! Me??? I just hold the GPS to my ear like its a cell phone....or just nod at people as they pass by.
  19. Umm Groundspeak does not make the choice for a cache to be subscriber only, it is an option the hider can select when posting their caches. Besides, there are PLENTY of caches available to all. Does it really make a difference that some are subscriber only? As far as I am aware this is not that new as it has been an option since I started in like April. Why not just move onto the next cache that is free? Its not really a big deal people!
  20. Lets hope he keeps his mind on the flying and does not think about the cahes till he lands! I guarantee that he could beat people to FTFs though.
  21. How about the "Stealth" geocoin. It costs a lot of money to make because it can't be seen!
  22. Truthfully, I think its just as important to show the DNFs as it is the Finds. That way any potential cachers know that they aren't always successful.
