  1. Geofence, answer in my eyes yes I was not going to find the answers in the one I did without getting close to the location. I call it a geofence, it might not be the proper word but to get the answers I needed to be there.
  2. Well as far as the types of caches mentioned by Moun10Bike it is not true, I started looking back in my souvenirs today and noticed I have one for China in 2005, Well I have never been thee, so I looked back and there was a location less cache where you needed to post a photo that related to an Olympic sport, I did curling I have been curling for 24 years. So I got a Chia badge because the Olympics were there. The last find in the AL I did gave me my 2000th find I had planned 2000 for an upcoming Hawaii trip. I saw somewhere where you can have the AL's removed from the geocache stats, but I can't find that link yet, I will look for it its been a busy day. Thanks for responding
  3. I did my first yesterday just to try it out, the results show in my calendar days but not in the list of recent finds also they mess up the grid for cache-type numbers. I am sure this has been talked about before but why can't the steps in an AL be counted as virtual caches, its better than the old virtual cache system because the geo fence shows you were at the place. also may just add a line at the bottom of the cache type grid showing labs found so the numbers all match. Just wondering.
  4. Ok let me correct a couple misnomers there. You are correct, it is a system to bring more people to the Geocaching website. Until these new people decide to sign up for an account at Geocaching.com, they can't view your member profile - so they can't view your email. If you are worried about Geocaching.com members spamming you - don't expose your email address in your profile (same as if, say, you were using Facebook). Forcing people to email you via the site enables you to control spam as they have to fill in the feedback form manually.... and if someone writes a spambot to do that, it'll get banned pretty darn quick. Facebookers are not some weird pseudo species. They are regular people. You're not going to see a sudden explosion in bogus logs just because they are following a link from Facebook. It has been a long time since the only people who find out about Geocaching are told by geocachers. There are dozens of news articles around the world every day directing people to this hobby. Caches are featured on sites like Twitter, or on community websites. The option to opt in is basically assuming that people who use Facebook are somehow 'undesirables'. The option to opt in would be better (more accurately) setup as follows: [ ] - Allow this cache listing to be linked to from the Internet. This enables off-site hyperlinking to blogs, Twitter, Facebook, etc. [ ] - Force this cache listing to be viewed only from links that originate on Geocaching.com. Geocachers must use Field Notes, or the Groundspeak search tools to view this cache listing. Perhaps we should have the option to force only members who joined before a certain day to be able to view our caches eh. Imagine that, we just force only "Charter Members" to see our caches and all muggling problems will magically go away. Both Charter Members in my area will surely enjoy the cache much more! I am not going to argue about this. I think we should have the option that's all
  5. I think I'll just KEEP POSTING THIS UNTIL SOMEONE ANSWERS WHY GC WON'T JUST ADD SOME EXPLANATION TO WHAT THE LIKE BUTTON DOES...... NOTE: Clicking the LIKE button will add a link to this geocache page on your Facebook home page. This is not a cache rating system. Is it THAT hard to try to explain to people what they'd be doing since many people who geocache and Facebook are NOT computer literate? It's amazing how EXPLAINING to people and TEACHING them helps EDUCATE them so they make the RIGHT decisions to suit their goals.... and not obscurely clicking on things because they "look" like something they're not. Still say no matter how you slice the LIKE button, it smells, sounds and quacks like a rating system. De-ja-vu???? Yup. Until someone answers why NO EXPLANATION is provided by GC for what that obscure, cache-rating-system-looking LIKE button does I'll just keep copying and pasting I still think and say it's a way for GC.com to get more links back to the site, so they can up ad cost and increase revenue. That seems to be what the web is becoming. That's fine GC is prviding a fun experience. My problem is the like link puts my cache page on someone elses Facebook page, they can then click to my profile and get my e mail and any other web page links I have posted. I think this is going to open GC members up to more spam, also the non caching members will now know where caches are and it could lead to more caches being muggled. Maybe the face bookers will post logs on caches they have never found and are we supposed to police that and delete false logs from face bookers. This should be a check box opt in option on the cache listing page. Just the the premimum member caches are opt in. Give usbthe choice and let us decide if the facebook lite option sows on our pages Geohiker55
  6. I am with you, I don't like the idea that Groundspeak is associating our cache pages to FACEBOOK, Facebook has written then re-written and re wrote their privacy settings this year, no one knows for sure what information they are passing on to advertisers. Alos the only reason why Groundspeak is doing this is to get links back to geocaching.com from non cachers in hopes to increase ad revenue. I wrote asking for this option to be removed and they will not do it, at the very least it should be an option when you place a cache. like the premium only check box. geohiker55
  7. I purchased an Oregon 400 T as soon as it came out, I found it to place me 50 feet south of where the cache is or 50 feet south of a road I was traveling on. After several complaints to Garmin the agreed to take it back and replace it with a refurb unit. well that unit shows the exact same accuracy, so my Oregon is now on the shelf and useless. I love garmin units I have 2 street pilots, 3 nuvis, 3 different e trex models All of them are extremely accurate Somewhere Garmin has missed with the Oregon series. Also I find the Oregon screen very hard to see, Garmin tells me its the same screen as the nuvi but I don't think so. Good Luck Joe
  8. I have a Garmin Oregon being delivered on Monday, will I be able to play the Wherigo cartridges? also is there going to be a player for the MAC? Thanks geohiker55
  9. Thanks to everyone for your quick responses
  10. I have been asked to place a few caches for a historical society and they would like to have a link placed in the description linking to their web site. can some one plase tell me how to do this? I assume I can use he following code (<a href="http://www.chenangocanal.org" target="_blank">visit link</a>) Can I just enter this code in the description block Thank you geohiker55 Joe
  11. I find trying to post a find Waymarking to be very hard, I tried 3 times 2 times they wanted me to write out a more detailed post and do it in proper english (they actually said that) the other one I submitted a photo and the guy said the photo wasn't close enough. So I have given up on Waymarking. I think we need to bring back the virtual caches, i work out of town about 25 to 30 weeks year and I use geocaching as my evening entertainment. I loved being taken to some sight or park by a virtual cache. it was a great way for me to see parts of the area I was in I would not have found on my own. So bring them back
  12. I had to change my e-mail address and I was sent a message to validate my account, when I clicked on the validation link I got the following message. There was no option to try and revalidate, I did change my e-mail. Account "geohiker55" has already been validated. You will not need to revalidate your account unless your email address changes. What should I do next? Thank you geohiker55
  13. I love the new cache along a route feature, is there anyway to book mark the results or generate a goggle map showing the results of a new route?? Geohiker55
  14. Ahh, thank you, I liked the idea of using them for bookmarking caches along a route. Thanks again
  15. The problem with google maps as it was set up is it would show 20 random caches and not necessarily the cache you were checking out. If that feature could be corrected google maps would be OK.
  16. Thank you for the information
  17. how do you add links and html code to your profile or on a cache page I want to put a link to a web site thanks
  18. I like having the seek link available, I can type in an area and see all the caches and plan my route with bookmarks. and on the printed cache pages we have the old maps back with more detail Thanks Geihiker55
  19. Google maps are extremely outdated, everyone seems to think that they are updated daily, I have heard about companies painting their companies name on the roof so it will show up in google maps. I am not sure why Groundspeak decided to use them. One sort of nice feature is being able to pick caches along a route and bookmark them. But I still get 20 random caches when I click on the maps instead of a showing of the caches in the area of the cache I am searching. I would like to see a list of all the closest caches from the one I pick Joe
  20. I think you can if you disable Java/scripts, you get the old maps back (if I read the thread correctly - I don't use Macs/Safari) I turned off java scripts and I got the old maps back in Safari, so that works. I end up with a second blank box on the left side of the screen but the map works
  21. Why GOOGLE, I am so tied of google this and that all you get with google is what people have paid them to be seen, take it from a former google advertiser. The old maps were fine.
  22. While all the work that you do to make the cache pages better is appreciated by all, I think that it is a disservice to force a change such as this when it clearly cannot be used by all. This has been described as a beta, so we should have a choice whether we want to participate in it. Please go back to the other map until you can work the bugs out. In the forums you will find a link to the web kit developers site for safari (sorry I tried to relocate it but cant) I downloaded it and it looks and works just like safari the icon has a gold ring around it. The map shows up but everyone is talking about how all the area caches show up, the map I get only shows one cache. I have not been able to get it to show more then one cache at a time. Sorry again for not being able to relocate the link but someone put it out the first day these new maps showed up. Us MAC users will have to just make do for now.
