  1. Am I insane (a good possibility) or just a wee bit daft (a certainty, but how does it impact this current situation) or did I just push some "Translate all into armenian" button on the website? I can't figger this out. I just landed in San Antonio TX a couple hours ago. I have a bit of time this afternoon and I'm leaving the hotel to get some fresh air and exercise. I was going to look for some caches but they are all in some strange language!! Maybe there are a lot of Estonian or Armenian or Latvian geocachers operating near zip code 78216 or, maybe somehow geocaching is translating and I don't know how to stop it? I know this sounds goofy, but if anyone has an idea how I might be messed up here, let me know. My email is mike9760@yahoo.com - kayakman9760
  2. In Elgin Illinios a few days ago I found a GPSr which was apparently lost by someone who was shopping for some things in between Caching trips. If there is anyone in the area who has lost a GPSr please let me know. I'll go look in the file cabinet where it is stored and if you are the rightful owner I'll tell you everything else you need to know to claim your lost article. If you know of a better place to post this announcement where it might be recieved by the right person, please let me know, or just put the info there with my email address. I put it right here because I thought maybe the person who lost this one would be looking for a replacement - Kayakman9760 email mike9760@comcast.net
  3. Ya know, I am of two minds on this. . . my initial reaction was 'live and let live.' I spent a year in Jamaica and no one ever offered to sell me pot because I look and act so straightlaced it never occured to them . Similiarly, I just don' t think a gay man would come on to me. Even if they did, I'd just explain I am not interested. I don't think I've ever heard of a gay man raping a straight man. From the looks of this one place I've been several times (there are several caches there and I have yet to find them all) they have a target-rich environment without molesting straight guys. But, it does turn my stomauch now that you mention it, that they might just be doing it in the open. Especially if I had my step-son or my daughter with me and stumbled upon something like that. I have enough trouble explaining cats and dogs doing it. But if we complained about it it woudl not go away. I do not feel threatened by these people; I feel very sorry for them. And I am not goign to concede any particular patch of forest preserve to them. Especially if there might be a cache there! - Kayakman9760
  4. First time I ever heard about this sort of thing was when I was in college in Springfield, MO. There was this park about a half mile from the campus where the ROTC Department ran our 2 miles. It was downhil to the park one-half mile, then uphill to the next major intersection, then we would turn around. It was a great two-mile course, even though the last half mile was uphill. But, the first time I mentioned maybe going to that park because I noticed it seemed like a nice place, I was quickly informed only gay men actually went there. The rest of us only ran through once a week. Now, there is a well-known cache very close to my home in the suburbs of chicago where there are always several cars in the parking lot. . . much discussion regarding all the people who seem to be visiting the cache but never actually leave the parking lot. . . I guess everyone needs a hobby. - Kayakman9760

  6. I know this sounds stupid, but I feel a strange sense of accomplishment just because I just read all 5 pages. Once when I was young(er) I made the mistake of telling a coleague of mine "I never read fiction, life is too short." My friend tried to explain to me the benefits of lighthearted reading (I was into biographies and history and stuff) and described a delightful book called, you guessed it, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." There was one quote she told me about from the original book; "I was just walking along, minding my own business, when I was struck in the back of the head by a cocktail party." (probably not a precise quote, twice removed and remembered over 20-plus years). It was several years later when I purchased a large leatherbound volume containing the original 4 (ir was it 5) books of the Hitchhiker trilogy and I was hooked on good whimsical fiction from that moment forward. Having discovered geocaching a little less than a year ago, and having discovered this HGTTG link tonight, I will soon be sending some sort of Doug Adam-inspired whimsy into the cacheverse myself. You ain't seen the last of me here. - Kayakman9760
  7. I was looking for a discussion on just this topic. (interference near airports) It amazes me to read all the reasons people choose one GPRr over another. I chose my Garmin GPX 12 because it was the first chance I had to buy a GPSr for less than $200 a couple years ago (or was that just a year ago?) I figgered it was cause there were better models out and garmin made too many of these. Anyway, I like using it, have found lots o caches and don't plan to replace it anytime soon. But, I was really curious about this airport stuff. I thought it would be fun to start it up on an airplane just to see how high we were and how fast we were flying; maybe even to know when I passed over places I had been before but several times I have tried and it just says acquiring and it never clicks in. I suppose everyone else's more expensive GPSr s do just fine on airplanes right? - kayakman9760 email mike9760@yahoo.com
  8. I have my first TB and am reading up on TB etiquette here. The first time I ever read anything about Travel bugs I thought it said you can and should take them to visit a couple caches then place them in a truly worthy one. The heros TB (#307333) has accompanied me on several minor adventures (all hero-related, more or less) and I have mentioned him in each post, AND on the TB page. BUT, when I hit the 'map' button on the heros TB page it still only maps him to where I picked him up. I guess in order to get the map to show the TB's whole adventure I would have to log that I 'dropped' him at each cache I have visited with him then 'pick up' - I bet this is a functionality issue which will be remedied soon. M England aka kayakman9760 email michael.j.england@us.army.mil here is my favorite geocache-related quote. As soon as I figure out how, I will make this my signature and include it in all posts. "Think digitally but carry a hard copy. A computer with a bullet hole is not much more than a doorstop, but a map with a bullet hole is still a map."
