  6. garmin have just released this new toy for oregon and dakota users garmin looks like the future of caching has gone quite hi tech! so basically this could be used as a multi cache and when you get there it transmits the data for the next position. Some crazy possibilitys...any ideas what you could do with it? i cant wait to get mine
  7. i just got the wildfire yesterday so i am still learning its features to do with caching. What apps are you guys using and how do you get it to direct you to a cache? cheers Paul
  8. Hi i started offf with the "yellow brick" but i got a little bored of the display too quick as it didnt really give me what i was looking for on the display which was a mapping unit. I moved up to the venture cx and saved up for the topo as this unit had an expandable memory. Once i did this it made the unit come much more alive and actually gave the land some definition on the screen instead of just the normal yellow, bearing in mind water isnt shown on the yellow map as standard only on the topo addition. Once the topo is on i could just have a quick look at the map before i went to the cache to get a feel for what the land is like. One problem for me was the manual compass built in to this unit, when standing still it wouldnt give a bearing. You have to move to get a bearing. i do also use this for walking so i found it a little annoying. So at that point i moved up to the colorado as i was doing more caching and wanted to go paperless due to a couple of occasions when i didnt print off all the cache details and this resulted in a minor disagreement with the better half!! Still having topo on this unit was great as the screen was bigger had a faster processor when zooming in and out. The paperless caching is cool, all the details appear on screen even the hints are there as well if u get really stuck. At this point i did use the picture viewer to take some kids i borrowed on a picture trail to the cache, made it more fun for them and let there parents worry the thingy they were holding was £300. This is where i point out i found the jog wheel on the colorado a pain to use, editing info in to the unit and saving waypints with different names was a long drawn out process. Then along came the oregon, when reading the pre release data i thought the touch screen would be rubbish to be honest. The colorado was released with loads of software glitches and i expected the oregon to have some as well. How wrong could i be, had the unit 2 months now. Touch screen is fast and responsive, menus change really quickly and editing waypoint data is so simple in comparison to the colorado. The screen covers the majority of the unit and means the buttons and keyboards are big and its easy to tap the right letter. paperless geocaching is just as good as ever they have just refined some of the menus to tart it up a little. Overall i love the oregon i think the touch screen makes navigation of menus easier than the previous toggle keys on my previous etrex units. People do moan the screen isnt bright enough on the oregon and colorados, well truthfully they arent but if you can get over that probably being the only niggle then thats good. My recomendation is to start on the venture hcx as this can add mapping which is a good way forward, or simply spend as much as you can afford but dont push your self too far. Hope this helps Paul
  9. Hi Jazz i am also in the industry and recently had a customer who couldnt load anymore caches to there unit, Garmin said it might be beacuse it is full as apparently it only holds 124 caches. So they said do it as a pocket query and you can store up to 2000. Now i can only persume in theory it changes the file size / type and lets you store more. This is in the premium members section on the right of your account. This is info from Garmin technical, since passing thi son to the customer i have not heard from them since so it must have worked. Jazz get playing with the oregon its a great piece of kit!!!
  10. Hello all Had a oregon 300 for a 2 months now after moving up from a colorado from a venture cx. First of all yes the screen is dull, i dont feel i have had a problem with the backlight when lit just leave it on 30 secind timer to save the power. Other than that fine. The touch screen is awesome, easy to use quick to respond and the menus change very fast. The touch panel is sensitive, doesnt need to pressed too hard either. Saving or editing waypoints to me is a piece of cake, just tick yes then move your arrow left and right to choose which part of you rlong or lat to edit. Change icon, name and other data in the same menu. Geocaching mode is really nice, writing is a little small but still clear to read when lit up. Its really cool how they have used the frog and he shows you how many you have found. a nice littel touch The unit only stores 124 caches after it is full load them as a "pocket query" and you can store up to 2000. i have used the auto nav kit on this to drive around in my car and even have speed camerasloaded as well, it doesnt talk but has a nice bing bong to tell you about junction data and zooms in to the junction when you have changed the profile to automotive. I also have the bike mount on my Trek headset so when i geocache on my bike the big pink line points to where im going. Overall i love this unit after moving up from the colorado its so much easier to store and edit data, saving points and changing cache data is very quick. last thing im running 1700 mah nimh sony batteries, 9 hours use when messing around and saving points or 18 hours when not messed arouond with just turned on. Paul
  11. Just remeber that the oregon series can only hold 124 geocaches if you want to store more become a prmium member click on your account and on the right use pocket query this means you can then load up to 2000 info came direct from garmin uk, i have found this to be the problem with a few customers
  12. Hi all I work for an electronics company in leicester who are garmin distributors and wondered if anyone would be interested in a meet to take a look at GPS products, especially the new oregon. This evening could be for those who dont know much about gps or are looking to upgrade and would like some impartial down to earth advice, especially on paperless geocaching. If anyone is interested could you please log your interest here and i can arrange an open evening for you to visit my shop, 5 mins outside the city centre Thanks Paul ( i am a geocacher not just a normal person visiting this forum )
