My brother after losing his first cache to a state road crew on an annual clean up. He wants to replace the cache but he wants to teather it (by chain or cable) to a nearby tree. I say no because it would make it more visiable and might even make non-cachers weary of the box should they find it. Not to mention the damage it would cause to the tree. He says it will keep it from being taken again. and teathering it to the tree is just as distructive as laying it on top of the grasses where it is hiding. I ask what is the community's opinion. alot of newbies wanting to know "how deep are these things usally buried?". How is this happening? What is bringing people to geocaching then making them believe that caches are "buried"?? Is this what the media is reporting about this "sport"? Or do people just immeditly assume hidden box means "buried"? I never even consider this concept tell after I started reading the forums and then was questioning why would you bury one. They are hard enought to find when they are under leaves and in tree stumps. so is this a trend or am I just over anlyzing. James "Big Dog" -Clan Ferguson

How long should I let the program run. After 10 minutes the window still says Processing... I have a cache page open. I have Palm DeskTop open. I have Internet Explorer. I have C:/temp, I start GeoClipping Press Clip and then it just sits there. How long does it normally take?? Thanks James "Big Dog" -Clan Ferguson

find the connector hold it opening down then push the two opssites side down toward each other. once the chain is apart. find a length that works for you and then just cut off the excess (between the beads) with a pair of wire cutters or since the chain is thin enough a pair of scissors should work. then just pop the end beads back in to the connector an push the chain away from the connector opening. I've been reading several peoples Ideas for caches. I got me thinking. First and formost I would like to thank all you folks who shared all the great camo techinques, as this is another thing fueling this Idea. A cache that can be played as a Normal, Multi, or virtual using the same coords. Using a good Camo I could make the Normal/Multi find a 5 dif. thus keeping it open to a lower number for virtual. Post bogus coords. and necessary puzzles like myThicken Orange Juice, for those folks who want to play it as a multi. Then Give a question that needs to be answered by visiting the finial coords, for a multi stage virtual. But also include a link for an E-mail address that would auto respond with the real coords for those who want to play it as a regular or as a single stage Virtual. I just thought up this Idea and only have a vauge Idea of where to place it. But what do you think??? I think I'll call it "Play it Your Way" James "Big Dog" -Clan Ferguson

When it comes to the mention questionable items and the concept of removing them. if it is some thing that falls under the heading of NON-CACHABLE items as listed in the FAQ or Tutorial page....REMOVE IT.....as a player of the game I am bound by the WRITTEN rules to Enforce them. and until these rules change I believe everybody without a doubt should do this. If it leaves the cache bare, try to leave little extra to beef the cache back up. I do it! as for pocket knives, I've had one since I was eight. I was taught Knife saftey from the word GO. so I don't see Pocket Knives in a cache as being a problem. If kids are going to injure them selves with something sharp I am sure it would be easier for them to procure one from the kitchen then find one hidden way off trail, camoflauged, and tucked neatly in to the crotch of a tree. I can not quote Posts verbatium but I think it has been the cenceus of the community that as long as they are maintaining the caches it would be bad form for you to replace the cache box. I know if somebody changed one of my cache boxes I be pretty POed and would most likely pull the cache all together. It's thier property and thier responsiblty. So as long as they don't sherk this responsibilty I don't think it is up to the community to physically interfer. James "Big Dog" -Clan Ferguson

Go ahead and take them. It's not stealing UNLESS YOU USE THEM. If they never make it into a CD player of some kind they are just plastic discs. They make great Targets for BB and Pelet guns. or a nice Mobile or an intresting way to decorate your daughters room. Where did I put that picture?? Or at least something that would sort them seperatly. We here at Clan Ferguson have decided not to hunt Locationless, Virtual, or Micro caches. as we are into Trading trinkets. and as of late in our area there are poping up a lot of the above mention types. Thanks James "Big Dog" -Clan Ferguson

again I appreciate the resoponse from our head Guru. and I fully agree. But (as this is with human nature) I don't like the way everyone tries to find thier own interpation of the guidelines that have been requested of the community. My opinion, if you DIG at all it's buried. if your going to leave part of it exposed then just leave the whole thing exposed. saying things like recessed (sp) just makes you sound like a little kid looking for a way out of getting in trouble. "But Mom, you didn't say I couldn't have it. You just said Not in the House." Why does everyone try to find the grey?? it's this grey searching that is going to keep this sport from ever being allowed on to NPS, BLM, NFS or anywhere else that tells us "NO". I said this before and I will say it again. Unless we have a charter or set of guidelines and rules everyone is willing to follow and adhear to, we will just continue to be another "internet fad". I know that there is no hard fast rule against burying caches. but I have noticed on the forums A heavy dissaproval on burying a cache. Just wondering if there is anything on this site that catches and flags references Burried to the approvers?? Side note relating back to my Poll of Should you have X finds before hidding?? I am quite aware as the push pins in my mapping software will atest. Most are more then 30 miles from my home(in a N by NW direction) and yes that leaves a lot of land. but alot of the space around here are small unintresting or rather swampy forest perserves. and the intresting places are a little too close to populated space for my liking. (I don't want to get a call from the bomb squad) Once again I am not knocking anybody. you want to place them at break neck speed. by almeans do. First Off I am not knocking anybody. My brother and I are having a argument of the number of caches he wants to place. We have been cacheing since July 2001 and have 28 finds under our belt and have hidden 2(active). My brother has spent the winter down time thinking up almost 10 caches, and want's to hide them all as soon as the weather breaks. I told him we should hide one for every 10 finds he disagrees and feels hiding is much of the game as finding. But I feel the best way to keep the number of lame caches down and keep a postive spin on this game is to limit the number of hides. I have seen ,through profiles, several cachers that have WAY more hides then Finds in one instance I found someone who hid over 14 and only found one. I have even found people who started caching back in august found 1 hid 3 then haven't done anything else. I feel that you need to get an understanding of what makes a good Hide before you can Hide one yourself. So my question is should a cacher have X number of caches under his belt before placing first/another cache?? James "Big Dog" -Clan Ferguson

You're right. He's Wrong. She is right. They got a point BUT... Who Gives a HooT!!! Good gravey. Why in all that is good are you aruging over something that has no bearing. This is a non-competive outdoor activity. Who cares if someone is padding his find count or posting virtual finds without "approval" or posting finds on caches on seperate ends of the conrty in the same day. If thats what makes them happy, so be it. Is geocaching such a MAJOR part of your life that you feel the need to argue over every piddly little thing. If it is I think maybe your problems lie a little deeper then a rude e-mail or who has control of a cache. Please, PLEASE Let's just grab our GPS, a compass, some coords, a map and a friend, and head out to have a nice RELAXING walk in the woods. Sorry but I could only take so much of the squabbling. To boot most caches around here are in forest perserves (can't spell) so being in them at night without permission is tresspassing and I learned that lesson back in high school. I wouldn't want to go through the hassle or indanger the cache of being removed. Guess I'm getting old. Cache ON!! James "Big Dog" -Clan Ferguson
