  1. Oh yeah, that's right! Though the bus stop cache was really close to a virtual for some of us until Robin saved the day. Actually, I like the idea of virtuals and am disappointed in their departure. But that's for another thread.
  2. I certainly hope so. The event mini-buttons have arrived! The weather is clearing up and if it keeps up we'll have a raft available to use to get a cache on an island in a small lake. Culp686 is graciously hosting a coffee stop for everyone. Unfortunately, for some reason a lot of caches are going missing right now down here. Not sure why, they're a variety of types of hides, hiders, and locations so no common reason other than it's spring. But it doesn't seem to be the work of a cache pirate though. I'm replacing one more tonight and three more tomorrow. Looks like we'll have one cache (Littlest Venice) out of comission because the city is doing work there. Hopefully they'll return the hiding spot to it's location but it's been a couple of weeks and they haven't. I didn't hear much response on a Friday night dinner or caching in Castle Rock so don't have any plans for that. It should be a good time. It's a good route that will allow people to just do the Washington state, just do Washington state/Rainier, OR, or to be adventurous and explore Hwy 30 down to St. Helens, OR. If it's a clear day I'd really recommend everyone go to the four mountain view cache. If a view of the four mountains (Hood, Adams, St. Helens, Rainier) is something you'd enjoy. There is one last cache that will be added to the route before I can come up with a final route. Hopefully that will be done this weekend. The only "significant" walking will be up Mt. Solo. It's a short (1/4-1/2 mile) trek up a large hill to get two caches. It's iffy for a cache machine but far easier than some caches on other machines. I believe all driving will be on paved roads, nothing needing high clearance vehicles. And I think this is the first machine without any virtuals!

    Cache Quandary

I thought we were never to speak of that again.
  4. What about all those Wal-Mart and Target caches? There's also the caches hidden on timber company land. I've found dozens of caches on public access private property. I'd hardly call it almost non-existent.

    Cache Quandary

Funny you posted this GeoRoo. I just had a similar issue with a cache of mine. It seems that months ago someone put a logsheet inside a zip lock bag and placed that near a cache of mine. The actual cache was a bison tube. Well, obviously a zip lock bag is easier to find so over the last few months everyone found the bag, signed the logsheet, even added some loot. Finally, someone complained that it wasn't up to my usual standards so I went out and checked on it and saw the original cache without a single signature since last summer. Serves me right for making a guardrail cache a little tricky to find I guess. It was just one post down from the bag but hidden so no one saw it. I just posted a note on the cache and took away the bag. Never considered deleting the zip lock bag finds. It's all about the journey not the destination for me.
  6. I think you've got GORGEous VIEW mixed up with another cache. It's a nice cache but definitely not in the same league as the others. I'll second the mentions of Crack of the Gods and Room with a View. Another good cache is Nightwalker. Blows away all other night caches in the area.
  7. Some questions: There is a cache on an island in a small lake. You'll be at the launching spot for another cache anyway but it would take about 15-20 minutes to paddle over grab the cache and come back and . If I had someone with a 3 person raft would people be interested in this cache being on the route? (of course, this is weather permitting) I plan to include most of the multis and puzzle caches on the route. Part of this is because we don't have that many caches around here (I think it's only about 65 on the route including multis). Part of it is that at other machines it seems most people seem to want to do them regardless of whether they're on the machine or not. But mostly, it's because they're fairly quick/easy and don't take any prep work beforehand (no puzzles to solve!!). Anyone have a problem with this? I have found someone willng to host a coffee stop on the route. Is this something people want to see in a cache machine? At about 10 AM? I assume so but wanted to make sure. I like the idea of it being an alternative meet up spot for people running late or smart enough to sleep in on Saturday. There are about 6 caches between Castle Rock and about 16 minutes east of Castle Rock . Castle Rock is about 10 minutes north of Longview. Are people interested in a mini-machine Friday night before the real machine and then maybe pizza afterwards?
  8. Have to second that one for sure. Actually, the park and I suppose the cache has been temporarily moved. It's been a while but I thought the (virtual) cache took you to a sign on the sidewalk rather than the actual park (a few feet away). Which would mean the virtual is still technically there though not nearly as cool as usual.
  9. Elephant Graveyard is pretty cool. The original Payback is another nice cache (haven't done the others) . Another one I liked was Check your GPS because it let me check my GPSr. Olympia has a LOT of caches to choose from. Most are pretty quick grab and go caches.
  10. Good call, Jester, thanks. Not sure how I missed it. It seems like a nice motel from the outside and it's very near two (very lame) caches. (I own one of them so I can call them lame )
  11. Some Hotel/Motel options Longview: Ramada Limited Travelodge (not recommended) Kelso: Red Lion Comfort Inn Guesthouse Super 8 Best Western Best Value Inn (this location is not listed on the Best Value Inn website, not sure why) Motel 6 (thanks Jester) Longview doesn't really have a lot of hotel options, and the one's they have are mostly bad. There's the fancy Monticello Hotel but I've heard it looks very nice from the outside and in the foyer but the rooms aren't the best. And it doesn't seem to have a website so really how good could it be. Kelso has the hotels because Kelso is on the freeway. The cities are right next to each other so other than where the tax dollars go it really doesn't matter. We've stayed at the Red Lion and it was nice. Weyerhaeuser usually suggests Guesthouse for travellers. We've also stayed at the Travelodge and while it's cheap and probably the closest (not by much) I wouldn't recommend it.
  12. The event page for the LCM dinner has been posted. Nothing really new but thought I'd start a new topic for it now. Longview Cache Machine dinner All the info you'll need on the cache machine will be on the page eventually. For now, it just makes the event official.
  13. It probably would have been if he could have found that article. There are plenty of neat spots on the Longview Cache Machine (*hint hint* TravisL). We haven't gotten to the point yet where it's so saturated you put caches under lamppost skirts. Though I'll admit I have raised the ratio of micros quite a bit since I got here.
  14. Yes, April 29th. Event should be set up sometime in the next week.
  15. I generally don't give a fig what rules people want to put on geocaching. In fact, I get pretty sick of people deciding there's a right way and a wrong way to log caches or cache in general. HOWEVER, one point in logging velcro and strings as finds. I found a cache a while ago where the last few people didn't find the cache but logged it as a find anyway. A tree had fallen over and buried the cache and I guess since they had gotten to the spot and it was gone they figured it was a find. Well, the owner didn't really read the logs so he had no idea the cache was missing until I logged my DNF. So logging DNFs as Finds can affect others.
  16. What if you find the logbook laying on the ground but don't find the cache because it's missing? Does that count as a find? Are we looking for a cache container or a logbook?
  17. Well, Izzy's is out and Sizzler is in. They have a banquet room large enough to fit everyone in one room. Which is something that doesn't usually happen.
  18. Oh I know. And no worries hasn't slipped my mind. Coordinates are supposed to be for the dinner place so we're working on getting a dinner location. Izzy's Buffet is sounding the most probable at this time. In Longview if you have an event in the evenings there are a few choices but they all involve pizza places. At least for crowds the size of ours. I'm not planning a Friday night dinner. Machines are about caching so I thought I'd plan a short cache route in Castle Rock instead.
  19. Jeez, first people complain it's too soon to post about it now people are wanting it posted officially. You guys are never happy. It will be up sometime in the next few weeks. But we still have over 2 months to go.
  20. A friend of mine in California mentioned it one time back in 2002. I looked at the website and the nearest one was a 90 minutes away. Didn't think I could justify a GPSr for that and I was busy doing other things anyway. In 2003 I decided I *had* to have a GPSr but realized I really needed a reason to get one. I recalled geocaching and checked it out again. This time there were a couple of caches nearby. I ordered my yellow Garmin on the internet and the day it came the kids and I raced down to the park and found our first cache. Woo Hoo! I found 20 some more that week and we've been finding them ever since. Though not nearly as many now as we used to...
  21. I think I've logged a Found it because of this situation. I wasn't planning on returning to the area and I'd found the cache. But there was a cop sitting in his car very close. Decided it wasn't worth bringing the cache out to simply sign the logbook. I don't get much of a thrill out of signing so for me the trip was complete. I don't really get the fascination with actually signing a logbook. I may have done it another time when after walking all over downtown playing "urban bingo" I came right to where the cache was hidden. Under a park bench. In a deserted park with a dozen or so benches. And one homeless guy. Sitting on the one bench. Ugh. I don't recall if I actually logged that one or not. But Mrs. Stump counted it as a find.

    More Emoticons

I hadn't realized that this thread had to contain emoticons to make the case for more.... I had noticed that too Hugh and found myself . ATMouse you didn't have to have an emoticon but I found it funny that you posted you used them a lot but then didn't have any in your post asking for more. Anyway, back on topic. More emoticons would be cool. Great emoticons Ambrosia. Some more:
  23. You should be able to find your answers here: Personalized Plates
  24. Looks like Pepper's personalized license plate (along with her ) is gone. According to the DOL website TNLNSL is available.
  25. Are they going to be minted in the same quantities for all four or will demand dictate the quanities of each?
