  1. Just make sure people know going in how long it will be. Especially if there is going to be driving from location to location involved. That way the people who like that kind of thing will do it, and those who don't won't waste their time. Scott
  2. I bought mine at the end of September, mailed it in early November. (I kept all copies of everything) Just got me cheque last week, about 10 weeks after sending it in. www.wheresmyrebate.com never showed anything for me. I too get hosed by the exchange rate. When I bought the unit, $50 USD would have been close to $75 CDN, but with the loonie up there these days, I only got $66. Oh well, at least I got it.
  3. Mental note: Look at GPSr when I get home... Thanks :crosses fingers : Scott
  4. If you are not a "Premium Member" do those caches show up on a search?? I see the "* Denotes A Member's Only Cache" notation at the bottom of my search page, but so far have not seen any * Are they just not there, or are there just no MO caches around me? Scott
  5. I ran into Tick and Nammie on the trail a while ago (early December) and she mentioned maybe February. She was about to give birth any day though, so who knows.... Scott
  6. If you know thier Geocaching name you can search by that. On the search page use "found by this user" search... If you want to search by their real name ... not possible as far as I know. Scott
  7. How true!! I am in Ottawa an we finally got some snow this AM, but not much to speak of. Even if I had a pair (of snowshoes that is ) I wouldn't bother putting them on right now. Scott
  8. MEC is great, and you can usually rent it before you buy. If you buy it the same day, the day's rental fees are applied to the purchase if you buy the same product. Thing to remember about the less expensive shoes is less $$ = more weight. I am in the market myself, and have pretty much resigned myself to looking at the end of season and hoping for a deal. Crappy part is you have to look at them all summer... Scott
  9. Most of these items are hand made. You can download business card creation software, and make your own logo using photoshop or even MS Paint for something basic. Scott
  10. I would say... Bad batteries Backlight constantly on Defective Unit. Since you said you just got it. Return it, and get another one. No sense troubleshooting it if it can be exchanged as a DOA. Scott
  11. Having kids definitely helps... For urban hunts when alone I would try the "I lost my key / glasses / wallet / cellphone etc. etc. Gives you a reason to be hunting through bushes, just hope you don't run into a good samaritan who offers to help you look. One other one I tried while wandering throught bushes surrounding a city park in the middle of the day was..... "Here boy!.. " "Have you seen my dog... its a pit bull about this big :motion with your hand about 4 feet off the ground:. Oh yeah, if you do see him don't look directly at him, just stand very still and call me!" That gets rid of most people pretty quick, just hope they don't call the cops. LOL Scott
  12. I'm in, as long as it is an all Ontario thing. I live in Ottawa, well close to it anyway. Scott
  13. So what was revealed... A name, a location, and an e-mail address? Crap, I have that in my profile, and pictures of my family to boot. Some people just need to relax. Its not like they were stalking them or anything. Scott McKenzie Morewood, Ontario, Canada samcorp73@yahoo.com
  14. OK, I figured anyone throwing 60 pounds on thier back for no reason would have to have .. well "issues" shay we say. Cache on! Scott
  15. Lately I have been looking for more caches like yours. Now just need to find the time to hunt some! dadgum the "silly season" Scott
  16. That sounds like it rates a 10 on the Geek-O-Meter.. Super Cool!! I was using my SporTrak Map that other day in temps about -10 - 12 oC seemed OK. Sounds like yours was just one of those freeky things. Scott EDIT Here is the URL if anyone is interested in the prog: http://www.huntting.com/sawatch/
  17. WTF did you put in your pack to make it 60 pounds?? Any why?
  18. I have the Magellan SporTrak Map and it has the same issue. You just have to remember that accuracy effects placement on the map too. When I zoom out a few levels it all matches up, so its all good. Plus I find if I am using the road map to navigate, if I am zoomed in too far I can't see far enough ahead to be useful anyway. Just my $0.02 Scott
  19. I have the ST Map. Love it! The screen res. was better on the borrowed Garmin I started out with, and the user interface was a little more intuitive. Those two things aside, I am loving my Magellan! A few cache trips and I am as fast, or faster entering data than I was with the Garmin. Scott
  20. My first night cache didn't start out as a night cache at all. I am just to stubborn (stupid) to know when to quit. Ended up bush wacking 500m through seriously thick bush, failing GPSr batteries, no flashlight. Check out my log here Some pics! Me at the cache - enhanced version Un-enhanced version Can you see me? Needless to say, a mini-mag is in my kit at all times now... just in case. Scott
  21. I guess up here the cache density (or lack thereof) makes a cache marathon kind of harder to do. Add in a 6, and a 4 year old into the mix, and forget it! Kids are great, but slow! Look Dad, a grasshopper... 5 min. later off we go! The most we did was 4 in one day... As a cache owner (only one now, but more planned) I love reading people's online logs! One line logs bother me though. "Drove up, TNLNSL" - C'mon, put some effort into it! I try to look for at leat one pic. I can add to my log, as the pics are what I really enjoy the most anyway. Just my $0.02 Scott
  22. Do they have Topo for Canada?? I would like that option too for my ST Map. I use S&D now, and recently while caching a very large lake appeared in my path that was not shown on the map! Thanks, Scott
  23. I'll throw in my $0.02 (Canadian :-)... I started off using a borrowed Garmin Legend and lost sat. signal in trees several times while searching - frustrating! Since I have been using my Magellan SporTrak Map I have never lost signal once! Now, it might be related to that fact that it is fall now and all the leaves are off the trees, but I have been caching in some serious evergreens and been OK. I guess next summer I will have the final answer. Scott
  24. I read this one just before the foums went down, and never got a chance to reply. My thought was exactly why on earth is a gun in your pack, with a round in the chamber, AND cocked?? I mean really!! I can understand some people taking them with them, but if it is in your pack you are not expecting to have to draw fast, so why fully load it, and cock it?? Get real... or get smart! Scott
