  1. We all get DNFs when geocaching and for some MANY DNFs on a particular geocache. Don't think of them as failures just expanding your knowledge of Ground Zero By all means do a new log and move on to the next. Enjoy the obsession. -HHH

    PDA

Not sure if they are cheap or not but my favorite is the Palm TX.
  3. First off, it never hurts to attempt to contact the owner. It may be a rather difficult multi. A piece of the puzzle may be missing or as you stated the whole thing may need maintenance. I suggest asking the owner. Also love the word ninny.. are you British by chance? -HHH
  4. Pity, hope they at least came back and read some posts to learn more.. Hate to lose a geocacher over a simple misunderstanding. I do find it an interesting concept though of having a geocache made where you do hide treasures of the owner and make it so the geocache cannot be muggled and the treasures are protected and cannot be trade. Like behind museum glass or something.. Then you could have something interesting to examine besides just finding the cache itself.... Hmmmm.
  5. Welcome to the obsession.. You are going to have a blast. Feel free to ask around the forums if you have any questions.. -HHH
  6. Thanks for all the very nice emails and you tube comments. They have been greatly appreciated.
  7. Depending on which BlackBerry you get (whether it is GPS enabled or not) there is a whole slue of geocaching applications out there. If it is GPS enabled I would suggest cacheberry or even better GeocacheNavigator which is a complete package including field notes to quickly log your finds. Tons of stuff out there. Find what works best for your. -HHH
  8. Well first off, Welcome to the Obsession. You are going to have a blast with geocaching it's loads of fun. As far as using the Nuvi. My first 100 geocaches or so were found with the same thing. It is a bit cumbersome to use and the Nuvi is not made for outdoor use at all. So things like water and being dropped is going to kill it quick. I highly recommend since you are into so many outdoor activities to get a hand held GPS unit. They are made for the outdoors and will last a whole lot longer. Not to mention the accuracy is greatly improved. Have fun growing with geocaching it is very addictive. -HHH
  9. Hey All, The latest GeoSnippits tutorial video is out for your enjoyment. It is a Road Trip to the Ocean and even if you already know how to use Geocaching.com's interface for planning a geocaching route the video itself is fun to watch.. Check it out and as always love/need your comments and suggestions. http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2...geocaching.html See you out on the trails... -HHH
  10. Never had it happen but there is always the chance. Always keep all the goodies in the trunk and try to not keep any technology laying around to tempt with. Still it's bound to happen. Just sorry for you that it did. -HHH
  11. Besides the stores mentioned above there is always the Army Surplus stores nearby. -HHH
  12. Absolutely.. Highly recommend you become a premium member of geocaching.com and they have what is known as Pocket Queries. I have several GeoSnippits tutorial videos showing how to load them from beginning to end or there are other areas on the internet. -HHH
  13. I found it ironic that Garmin Help Desk people are telling their customers to check out my GeoSnippits videos because they explain what to do with a GPS better than they can explain. With that being said I would like to hear from you; What functionality on a GPS you would like explained? Need to know how to manually put coords? Delete existing waypoints? Mark trails/tracks to see where you have been? etc. Your input has been dictating most of the GeoSnippits episodes anyways so let me know what you would like to see. -HHH
  14. Way too many assumptions here so lets start with the basics. Are you sure that they are actually geocoins and have the tracking ids on each and every coin? If so great and if not they are not actual geocoins in the tracking sense. Next, your father has a bunch of geocoins that he wants to sell. Did he ever register them into geocaching.com? If so there is an entire different adoption process that needs to take place with the person who will be buying the coins. If he never registered them with geocaching.com then make sure you do not register/activate them and on to your actual question. There are oodles of geocoin makers out there. Many times they leave their maker card inside with the coin that not only tells where you can find more information about the coin but how to register/activate them. Here is the geocaching.com geocoin page that may help you out. It sounds like it's not going to be easy. http://www.geocaching.com/track/geocoin.aspx -HHH
  15. There are a couple of geocaching apps for the BlackBerry. My personal favorite is Geocache Navigator by Trimble which I think is what you are talking about hooking up with the field notes.. If you need more help please let me know and I will be glad to help... -HHH
  16. I always keep extra logs in my pack when geocaching. Whether there is no paper or a soggy log. I would in your case leave a log strip so others can sign then let the owner know what you did so they can do maintenance. Sometimes the owner cannot immediately get to a geocache and the gesture is usually greatly appreciated. -HHH
  17. For those of us who cannot watch video, what's your idea? I was asked by one of our GeoSnippits viewers to come up with an inexpensive Father's Day gift.. What I came up was a small ammo can filled with the makings for about a dozen geocaches, swag and logbooks. Of course you can put in what ever you would like but this was a simplistic example. I have received dozens of people loving the idea so hopefully this will help others as well instead of just getting the "tie" for Father's Day. -HHH
  18. Sorry for the confusion.. Had two SQL errors when saving and it did not post the initial post now shown below. Below is a link to a three minute video I make showing a Father's Day Gift Idea. It can really be for any geocacher in your life but I was asked to come up with this specifically for Father's day. This is not an advertisement, just a fun idea I hope you find useful. http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2...cache-gift.html Enjoy - HHH Of course you can put whatever you want. The idea for this was to have enough stuff to make several geocaches to hide. What you put inside is up to you.. Have fun! -HHH
  19. Just uploaded my latest GeoSnippits documentary video. Can't call it a tutorial really but it shows hard working geocachers giving back to the environment. Please be sure to tell all you know about it. http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2...-out-trash.html -HHH
  20. Someone wrote to me how she used a bobby pin to roll nano logs quickly. I would imagine you would need to take off the ends so it doesn't grip the paper when tight but has anybody else used that? -HHH
  21. I will always consider geocaching as a game, sport and obsession. -HHH
  22. Geocaching has allowed many different facets for me to explore. Not only is it a healthy alternative to being a couch potato but also a common ground for my daughter and I to have similar interests. Try doing that with a teenager these days. It also allows me to engage my creative side through tutorial videos like GeoSnippits or my blogs. Finally I have interactions and communications with multitudes of people all around the world that would not have been possible without the geocaching community. There is nothing quite like greetings and good tidings from some far off place I will most likely ever see with the same friendliness as if they were across the street. Oh and I like going outside and using that big satellite thingie too.
  23. Well you definitely picked one of the more difficult to find geocaches to start with. They can go and fit just about anywhere and with most being magnetic you can get very creative. Shy of the spy mirror good ole fashioned experience will help the most. -HHH
  24. Now I had to go and look up tant mieux. Thanks Flask for the French Lesson. Chalked one off for learning something new today
