  1. Here is a GeoSnippits video on how to log travel bugs and geocoins. Should prove quite useful for ya. GeoSnippits - Logging Geocoins and Travel Bugs Tutorial -HHH
  2. Welcome to the world of geocaches. First off this is actually a mystery or puzzle cache and not a multi like it is currently posted. Which means the actual geocache is NOT at those coordinates. After only doing 7 geocaches you may want to get a bit more experience with the standard traditional geocaches before tackling these types. But to answer your question. It looks like you will need a compass or a map to solve it. You will come up to a way marker that will have information on it. You will need to figure out the northern waymarker and the southern waymarker from the compass or map. Then fill in the information shown in the geocache description. That will give you the correct coordinates to find the geocache. Hope this helps, -HHH

  5. Why North Carolina of course. We have ocean, piedmont, mountains and several micro climate not found anywhere else... What else do you need? -HHH
  6. My 13 year old daughter (Miss Geoness) just passed the 500 find mark a short time ago is in that teenage stage right now. Which means some days she wants to geocache from morning until night and on other days would rather receive her finds by osmosis. Patience does not come easily, just watch me on my 5th time of saying "aw screw this". Yet it is a good thing to learn. DNFs is not a failure. It is simply a "will get it next time". Many times my daughter has really boasted the "aha moment" when we do go back and find it. It is an experience that should not be missed. -HHH
  7. With my discussions with geocachers around the world I find that many in the European countries tend to like puzzle geocaches even more than the traditional ones. They crave a good challenge and puzzle caches tend to be prized on a higher value than we tend to do in the States. I also have found that many people save puzzle caches for the rougher weather months. Many that can do the research and puzzle solving when it is wet, cold, etc. out. -HHH

  12. I find it interesting this year that no one really has asked for a specific GPS unit. Last year there was quite the wantings between Garmin and Delorme. Does everybody have what they want this year? -HHH

  15. Well believe it or not, it's THAT time of year again The geo-elves at the north pole are gearing up for another season of geocaching cheer and we want to know what all the GOOD (okay and the bad) geocachers want for Christmas (please include all other same time holidays as well we don't want to exclude anyone). So what geocaching gadget, gizmo or goodies would you like this year? We will compile everyone's requests around the beginning of December and a complete breakdown will be posted on my blog for all to see. If you could include why you would like said item(s) would be great. We will see what's hot and what's not. What will be the end all beat all on your holiday wish list. Remember people will be looking for ideas so send in as many as always... Ho Ho Ho!!! -HHH
  16. I made a GeoSnippits video for Michigan Magazine TV (RFDTV Network) which will be coming out in a month or so on this very subject. But in the meantime here are a couple of helpful posts that will help. Hope you like them... What's Your Geocaching Must Have Thing-A-Ma-Bob? http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2...have-thing.html So What's In Your Backpack? http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2...r-backpack.html -HHH
  17. Many of the geocaches that have a terrain and/or difficulty 2.5 or higher are most likely off the beaten path. I would look for geocaches in parks that have trail systems as well. Many times you can find multiple caches like that all in the same park. As far a writing into your GPS can be very tedious and I would consider more using a PDA which is easier and can be uploaded to geocaching.com. There are several GeoSnippits videos that I have created showing how to do paperless geocaching. You can see them at http://www.geosnippits.com. Hope this helps, -HHH
  18. You will have to remember that your GPS can be up to 30 or so feet off at any given time. That and the person who hid the geocache could be 30 or so feet of as well. So don't take ground zero completely to heart. When you get close put the GPS away and start a lookin. May I also suggest you check out our GeoSnippits Videos which gives you a ton of suggestions and examples for what to look for while geocaching. Here is one of the videos which is part one of our Introduction to GeoCaching series. It has been used on several corporate websites including for the Find Me geocaching based movie as well. You can find it here: You can see all the GeoSnippits videos (not including the ones on Michigan Magazine TV) here: http://www.geosnippits.com Hope it helps, -HHH
  19. Please don't take to heart that you are not able to find geocaches yet. There are a zillion ways of hiding a geocache and many can be quite challenging. If I may suggest you check out my GeoSnippits Videos. There are tons of examples of different types of geocaching hides and what to look for. I may also suggest that you calibrate your GPS compass. It may be off just enough by keeping ground zero further away than you expect. Also if you are using an automobile GPS instead of a standard handheld GPS will cause you issues. Here is the address to GeoSnippits: http://www.geosnippits.com Please let us know how you are doing before you get too frustrated. You and your child is in for a whole lot of fun once you get into the swing of things... -HHH
  20. Here is a very extensive post about that very subject. I hope you enjoy it. The title: Everything you ever want to know about swag. http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2...know-about.html -HHH
  21. I am putting together a post on geocachers and their geo-pets. I know when I take my geopuppy Emily with me it does add a bit of extra work to my geocaching adventures. I mean not only is there the extra food, water and potty breaks to contend with but other factors as well like having a 9 month old poochoid drag me through the trails. When I hook her up to a tree so I can attempt for the find and afterwards the signing of the log, trading swag, etc. Geopuppy would rather do the walking rather than the waiting and whimpers a lot. What type of situations do you run into while geocaching with your pet. Are there geocachers out there with other animals besides dogs? If so what? What can you do to help make the geocaching experience for both you and your pet more enjoyable? Any comments and advice would be greatly appreciated and most likely end up in my blog post. Thanks again, -HHH
  22. If I may make a suggestion. Below is a GeoSnippits Video showing how to load into your etrex via EasyGPS which is free. It may be a suitable resolution. -HHH
  23. What I find fascinating when reading other geocacher's blogs is the variety of experiences all around the world. I don't see too much expanding on logs but rather one geocacher telling others things I may not have a chance to see for myself. I get to also understand their challenges, likes, dislikes and differences which may not be anything that I am used to. In my blog I try to give as wide range of information I can find useful for other people and it appears to be well received. GeoCache: I'm NOT Obsessed... Right? http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/ -HHH
  24. Geocachers in general live by the motto "Poke it with a stick". When it comes to sticking your hand in creepy spots is what geocaching is all about. We acquire things like mirrors, flashlights, gloves, etc. to check areas before going for the grab but there are going to be times you just take the chance. Otherwise you will be getting 6 finds for the day instead of 20 worrying about it. Look before you reach will keep you safer. -HHH
  25. I have a two part GeoSnippits tutorial on paperless geocaching you might be interested in. Part One Part Two -HHH
