I never thought of it this way. I just picked up a U.S. mortar tube at a local army surplus store here in town because I thought it would make a great cache container. Not to mention the fact that it was only $4.50 and easily 3 feet long. It's got a pretty good diameter so I think I could get some good stuff in it. Wow, now I am not sure if it's a smart idea to do. Not that anyone asked, but my initial thought for this cache was to place it underwater. It's a water proof container and does not leak. I thought somehow I could tie it off to a solid object such as a tree and toss it in the water. The finder would somehow (details to be worked out later) find the line used to secure the container and retrieve it from the water. My only stump is how will I camo the line to avoid detection from the non-looking. And of course, will this thing end up floating on me? If that's the case, then it's not going to work as well as I would like it to. GG GeocachingGuy@cox.net

  3. I apologize for the 3 duplicate threads. I thought something was wrong. In the past I would enter a thread and it would show instantly. As it does on any other message board I have both ran and been a part of. When I didn't see the thread show I came back and wrote it again... and uh... again. Hence three threads on the same topic. Thanks! GeocachingGuy@cox.net

  5. I went to Academy a local sporting store the other day to purchase a topo-atlas and a compass. I came home only with the state topo. I was overwelmed at the large variety of compass' they had there. I had no idea where to start or what to look for. I am pretty sure I don't need one of the $90 military units. However, do I really want to buy my one going for $2.89? There were options for map compatable, options for those that simple said 'compass' on it's packaging. Those with the thin wire on it's cover, and so on. I have no idea what I need or could use at a reasonable cost for geocaching. Aside from geocaching I would like to stat hiking in which I am sure I would need a compass for that as well. I would appriciate any suggestions you care to give. Thanks, GG GeocachingGuy@cox.net

  7. What are 'gaiters' and can these be used to keep the sticky things off of your legs? Someone mentioned to stay indoors. It's not so much that I don't want to come in contact with them, it simply finding a smarter less harder way to avoid having to spend the needless boring time when the trips over picking these out of everything. 8. MapSource Roads & Recreation and perhaps MetroGuide® since I am dreaming here, for my eTrex Legend. GeocachingGuy@cox.net
  9. Stick-Tites: I realize there may be many different names for the same problem, I just heard of these myself for the first time as well not to long ago. They are little seed looking things that are very small, truly looks like a seed but covered with equally small pokey things that grab onto ones clothing. GeocachingGuy@cox.net
  10. I am originally from Southern California. I never knew what stick-tites were until I started Geocaching. Talk about annoying as all hell. I hate having to pick these off of everything when I get home. What could I use, design, implement, to avoid this nuisance. GG GeocachingGuy@cox.net
  11. I thank everyone for their contributions. To reiterate I have had more hours then I can count indoors. This of course being a calm no threat facility. My preferred handgun when it comes to my accuracy and ability is the 9mm Beretta with the longer barrel. I shoot very consistent and without any formal training do quite well. I favor the steel plates and this is what most of my practice has been on. Obviously I have never been under pressure when it was time to pull the trigger. I am not an expert, I know this. I am not a sharpshooter, I know this too. But I do want a sense of protection. I stand 6’ with a large build. Recoil on the Beretta doesn’t seem to bother me, but the indoor range doesn’t allow rapid fire. Therefore, I am not sure how my aim will be when I need to squeeze off more then a round or two in a moments notice. For some reason I thought the Beretta was overkill. This is what prompted me to start this thread being that I would assume I am not the only one who has thought of this idea to carry while in the backwoods.
  12. I am not jumping into this decision with both feet before I test the water. However, I am contemplating making the purchase of a handgun. I currently do not own any guns. I have however fired excessive amounts of ammo on quite a variety of handguns all within an indoor range. I've been shooting indoors for 7 years now, all rentals. This gets costly, but that's beside the point. Now I may be off here, again I am not an expert. My core use for such an item is protection against mountain lions, wolves, bobcats, and bears. Now I realize I'm not going to drop a bear with a handgun but I am sure or at least I think I am that if applied properly it should be effective in getting it to release my leg from its jaw. I don't think I need a .50 cal Desert Eagle, but I don't want to go out there with something barely big enough to fit in my hand. I live in a state in which if I got the cash, I can legally make the purchase of a firearm in 20 minutes time. I have no criminal record period. I would be then interested in taking carry and conceal classes for the sole purpose of carrying while out in the woods. What firearm would you recommend?
  13. I've got a drive coming up shortly in which I have no dedicated arrival time. I thought this would be a great time to see if there are any caches along my way. What would be the easiest way of determining what caches are fairly close to the roads I will be traveling on? Is this even possible? Thanks, GG

  15. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat: Hmmmmm, I never thought of it that way. If I send you a backup copy of Mapsource Topo, you have to promise not to use it on your GPS...right? Hmmmmm, I never thought of it that way either. Of course I wouldn't use it, this would be a terrible moral violation. It would sit in my 6 hour rated media storage fire proof safe. Hell, I would probably even forget about it until you contacted me in the horrible event that you needed to recover your backup. Let's hope something never happens in which you are forced to retrieve your backup, but in this day and age better safe then sorry. On a side note my Garmin Legend is such a great product. I bought it off of Amazon a week ago today and have been nothing but happy with it.
  16. I tell ya what, if anybody would like me to store a backup of their software off site for them I would be happy to oblige. Normally I refuse to use my house as a storage facility for most, but this community is so warm and welcoming that I being the kind hearted friend I am would take no payment for helping out another cacher. Just think of the potential risks involved with not having a backup or better yet, having a backup but store in the same location as your original. Should a horrible act of god destroy your original, then there goes the backup. Now that would be terrible wouldn't it? Therefore I announce that I am willing to provide off site storage for those in need. Should you ever need this free service I am only a message away.
  17. I truly appriciate all the comments and suggestions thus far. I think I will stick with cheap but effective. Primarily because I am no where close to that of a seasoned hiker.
  18. I hope I don't come across as unintelligent here, but I got a few questions about hiking sticks. I can see their value and I would like to get one myself. However I can't see where people go out and buy ones pre-made as if they work any better. I am sure I am off here, hence the post. What am I missing here? Could I not go to Home Depot, purchase a long wide in diameter push broom stick, or perhaps a wooden closet bar. I would cut this to my needed length and use it as I see fit. What are the advantages of say buying a professional hiking stick? Thanks, GeocachingGuy
  19. Both my wife and I are new to caching and have found only 3 thus far. Before we even got started we both registered with our own user names. We decided that we would both log our finds on each username. Mainly because I already know I will probably be doing more hunts then she will. This will allow us to keep a more accurate count on our finds. Again we're newbies, but this is what we've done so far.
  20. Well..... I read the first post suggestion regarding army surplus stores carrying camo paint and I was off... Picked up 3 cans at almost $6 a can. I come home paint my item, and THEN come back to read this post. Seems like the general opinion is to visit Wal-Mart getting the same flat colors accomplishing the same goal. Hec, even my wife said before I read this thread, could you have got those same colors at Wal-Mart. I feel the fool... But a fool with the cans of color he needed to begin with so I can't complain to much. As far as the averaging, upon reading this thread I decided when I place my first cache, I will leave the GPS on at the same location without movement for 2-5 minutes before marking the waypoint. Then I will see how many people rag me about my reading being way off, lol... GeocachingGuy
  21. I've looked around at a few places and no one here carries it. While your here would you mind explaining the process of finding the average of a site reading? Another person here explained it and although I truly appriciate their time I didn't quite qet it. Thanks, GeocachingGuy
