  1. In the past few weeks, myself and a group of people on a Facebook group have been noticing a frightening direction that Jeep TBs are taking again. This direction is involving the sale of Stolen Jeep Property, namely the Jeep Travel Bugs, on eBay by unscrupulous individuals. This also is coupled with the fact that there are people who are willing to pay money for the Jeep TBs either because they know that that they are stolen or not know. Part of the argument towards this activity, which is quite heinous given that these are technically owned by Jeep, Fiat Chrysler America (FCA), and Groundspeak together, is that they were a promotional item given away for a long-past contest. I could not begin to state how much I , and many others, feel that this is wrong and that Groundspeak should partner with eBay to try to stymie the sale of stolen trackable properties on eBay. A couple of past and current auctions on eBay come to mind when I write this post: Current Auction - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-Geocaching-Travelbug-Geocoin-/182446943182 Past Auction - http://www.ebay.com/itm/182438605694 (Sold for US $113.50 and what I amount to sale of stolen goods) Past Auction - http://www.ebay.com/itm/122296157579 (Seller Ended Early due to pressure of people emailing him/her about selling stolen goods) Past Auction - http://www.ebay.com/itm/122296146029 (Seller Ended Early due to pressure of people emailing him/her about selling stolen goods but listed it as being no longer available) Past Auction - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Geocaching-Vintage-Old-Style-Travel-Bug-X-2-One-Is-Pretty-Green-Jeep-Other-Is/122289694399 (sold for US $76.00 and had someone else's trackable that was stolen as well) The current auction is listed by a eBay User named "billy_goatee" and likely matches this geocaching member "Billy Goatee" (https://www.geocaching.com/profile/?u=billy+goatee) from Roy, Utah. A few of the other auctions were listed by dodgerboy1239. The closest match to that name that I could find was "dodgerboy" (https://www.geocaching.com/profile/?u=dodgerboy) from Nampa, ID. At best, in order to make it harder to sell stolen coins/TBs/trackables on eBay, Groundspeak could contact eBay and request that eBay require sellers to enter in a tracking code which could query against Groundspeak's database of trackables to return a non-changable Reference Number link in the listing for possible buyers to check for fraud (activated coin/TB, stolen coin/TB). This system could also be set to enter a note on the Trackable that it is being listed on eBay and provide a link. Otherwise, if this sort of thing is allowed to happen, it will further embolden trackable theives to continue to exhibit this sort of behavior and frankly, I am quite frightened to think of how bad it could get. Can I get Groundspeak volunteers and Lackeys to weigh in on this? Thanks
  2. further update, mine ran...
  3. I have a friend that is having the same problem though I have not attempted a PQ run today myself... Edit: I am also having this issue as I tried to run one after I confirmed that he is having the issue.
  4. With the top image, what you can't see is what amounts to be what feels like miles of the regular menu situated in a column. I've uploaded two more images for comparison: Original as it is now Simplified (mock-up)
  5. On my Blackberry, I can navigate the geocaching website like with a normal computer can but the header and navigation menus for the site take up a lot of screen real estate. I know that there are links to "Skip to Navigation" and "Skip to Content" visible when using a mobile device but I feel that code to detect when a user is using a mobile device and show a simplified menu/header would be more efficient for users on mobile devices. Examples: Original as it sits now Example of what it ~could~ look like
  6. Perchance can the functionality be modified as to having both the Dummy coordinates and the corrected coordinates for a puzzle? I know that the functionality will be brought to the API, PQs, and maps, but what I am asking is: Can the corrected coordinates be added as a waypoint to the actual listing instead of moving the icon to the corrected coordinates? The idea that was stated above with a Red "?" would fit into this functionality very well. If this is not at all possible at this time, I will understand.
  7. I am truly sorry for your loss. It is especially sad when cachers are called home to cache in Heaven. My prayers and thoughts are with you, may you find healing in due time.
  8. To get the app to show miles, go to "Cachesense -> Options -> Units" and select either "Imperial (yards/miles)" or "Imperial (feet/miles)" according to your preference.
  9. previously, if one was the owner of the trackable, one could move it to and from their collection without it being collectible. This option has disappeared. It was quite nice as when I don't cache in my trackable car, I move it to my collection so it did not inadvertently visit a cache that it did not go to. I cannot do such now and would like it to be an option for the trackable's owner again.
  10. I am a self-appointed TB and Geocoin protector. I will gladly adopt a coin that cannot be sold. In the past 9 months, I have moved or discovered 232 trackables and released 6 at-large trackables myself (so far).
  11. Well, everyone can vilify me all they want for not logging a FTF right away. I play the game the way I think it should be played.
  12. I have one of those shameful high numbers... 2574 days without a cache. I logged GCGGR4 on 8/2/2003 as my first cache (as RebelTag). I then logged my second find on GC26HP4 on 8/20/2010. When I found my first cache, paperless geocaching wasn't even thought of yet... I didn't think that my family or my girlfriend would enjoy it like they do now... but then I got my Blackberry in February of 2010 and discovered the Trimble app in August while out of town. Now I cache with Cachesense on my Blackberry and have more than 750 finds.
  13. ROFL!!! Thanks for making my night with a mental visualization of that!!!
  14. 52 on 3/12/2011. This included 2 events, 2 unknowns, and a virtual (47 traditional).
  15. I just checked on a friend's cache today that now has three nice geocoins missing from it. The first one was after its first placement, and the other two after I had them. Now before it is said that it needs to be a mystery cache and it needs to be hard, I can assure you that this is a mystery cache already and it is not easy to get into the box if you stumble onto it. (GC Code: GC27DJ9) This cache involves the writing of Myst and has a combination padlock on the latch. The trackable thief has to already have solved the puzzle or has a friend who did. It's a drive-up of sorts, not a walk-up, but still it pains me that this is also seeming to happen with one of my caches within a few miles. Four TBs have now gone missing from my TB hotel. (GC Code: GC2HJ62) I fear that a trackable thief is working the area and I am thinking it is time to set up a sting like has been done before in other areas.
  16. While I have a "truth in attributes" philosophy, I have no problem with that example. Love it. Yeah, I had to give it a favorite point. The CO has a marvelous sense of humor. To calculate the location of the final, you need the date which is next to the artists' signature. This involves closely examining a spot on the statue right next to the bull's... well, the part that makes him not a cow. And there are ALWAYS a lot of people around. I must have the GC code for that one!!! On another note, I have "Watch for Livestock" on an urban hide of mine because it deals with the history of the land before it was city... It was a large Dairy farm...
  17. That's one heck of a FTF!!! Ignore the person whining... they're just unhappy that you got to it first!
  18. I'm not a newbie and DNFing a 1/1 is possible... When you get out there and find enough sneaky hides as I have, you begin to think that all hides are sneaky... I almost DNFed a bison hanging in plain sight on a wire fence, but luckily my girlfriend was there to pick up my slack... Oh, and the hide was this one: http://coord.info/GC2EP4X
  19. But you can achieve the same thing by posting a short "found" first, then delete that log and post another found. Possible scenario... I've been out caching for the day, and done lots of caches. I keep my records in GSAK, which reads the date/log number generated by Groundspeak. The 'Not FTF' log is the third/fourth/ninth/etc cache of the day. I don't want to upset the record by posting a 'Found' before I've logged the prrevious caches in find order, but want to raise the fact the cache has been found... And if I log it by mobile/cell phone from the cache... That order thing is exactly what I talked about on the local forum. Just last week I cached all five days Mon-Fri. I had the FTF on Monday night and left early the next day for a town over 100 miles away. My girlfriend and I cached all along the way (3 hour trip took 6) and when we got to the hotel, I finally had the internet access that I needed with my laptop to start logging finds. I wasn't going to go and log the FTF right away, I logged the finds in the order at which they came... even with a few DNFs thrown in there too. The FTF-hounds need to understand that logging the FTF right away is not a valid requirement. The game is about finding the cache... If you don't get there first when you take the risk of you not being the FTF, oh well... It's part of the game! Who knows? You might get there and someone is searching and you might get it or the other person might get it...
  20. baloo&bd has a good point... I'm going to go and add the scuba attribute to all of my caches now!
  21. Like I said on the thread on the local forums mentioned earlier, I have a smartphone but I use it like a GPSr. I use the app called Cachesense that stores offline field notes much like an eXplorist GC. My smart phone is not the newest or the fastest, and I find trying to navigate pages that are intended to be viewed on a computer as a pain on my Blackberry Curve 8330... Often my phone will lock up when I am trying to download the GPX of that newest hide that I am going on FTF for. I find it a pain to try to log that FTF online with my smartphone especially if I am trying to drive to the next one and I am by myself (anti-texting/phone internet law while driving in IL if anyone should also wonder). Therefore I still use a field note and compose my story later. If I set the field note properly, then my FTF log will still be the first online log. One example on this cache: http://coord.info/GC2R1VD My Field note was uploaded and logged the day after my FTF because I could not get to a computer that night and log the find. My FTF log (besides Smurfy98's) is first on the list of finds and it was not logged right away. Did I do anything wrong? NO. This discussion is so trivial that some people are whining like they are in kindergarten and their toy was stolen during recess. I'm going to go one step further and say that the inclusion of online logging for smart phones has killed the game in some regards. If you don't want to race through traffic and bushwack 3 miles in the dark while it's raining and cold just to find that you got beat out on an FTF, THEN DON'T GO AFTER FTFs! It's as simple as that. The inclusion of online logging for smart phones has made the game so insensitive and mean. It's a sad day when people vilify other people for not following unofficial rules while participating in a sidegame of a freaking game.
