  1. HhhMmmm.. Just saw these posts..... and all are right, more or less (meaning your preferences). Take what you need for a 2 nite stay (bare minimums) and then you will always be prepared. I carry my "go-bag" everywhere, on foot, truck, or motorcycle. I expect someday I will need the items, but more importantly, another may need them. So, I will share... Safe caching to all, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  2. Good Morning All, I also use the Dell Axim X5 (400mhz) with a BC 307 CF Slot GPS, very sensitive, especially good for heavy forest canopy! Check Ebay for very reasonable prices on CF GPS units.(about $100 or less) Performance was as good as garmin 176C ! (side by side tests) I am using CacheDragon and other than a few minor problems, it works well. (won't save, shows 2X distances, etc). But I have found several caches with it. It's nice to see all of the caches in your area on one map! ....and I can see the GPX file info for each one. For mapping I have used Delorme XmapHH, but very slow.... Until Delorme makes some improvements, I would not recommend... I am currently using Mapopolis, and it works great ! Try there Demo maps with the downloadable application. I create a position on the map for the cache and then follow it to the general area, then switch to CacheDragon. Other items to make my Dell more usable include a small battery pack (4AA's and a small plug for the bottom of the Dell) which extends my battery life... (about $8 from ebay). AND... I also purchased and modified a small clear fishing tackle box to fit the Dell and CF GPS inside. The cover snaps closed and the screen is very visible through the lid. Tackle box was about $3 from Walmart and I cut out the internal divider sections (with a hot soldering iron) to fit the Dell w/attached CF GPS inside. Now I don't worry about the Dell when I set it down to open the cache and make my log. .....And as always, I carry a magnetic compass.... nothing like a dummy (me) to get lost when the batteries go dead on the Dell. Fortunately, I have not had the call the resucue St Bernard (do they still carry whiskey in their neck-keg?) yet.... but caution and preparation are best! (I might get lost for an hour or so if the "whiskey dog" shows up...lol) Anyway....safe caching to all, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  3. Hi Group' I too vote for the PPC with the Dell Axim X5 being the device I use. I have a CF Slot GPS with CacheDragon (works well, some bugs being worked out), Delorme and Mapopolis moving map software. I also have Navio and a GPX file program, but CacheDragon combines the best of both worlds. I have found battery life around 6 hours with moderate usage and the back lite set to operate only when a key is struck. I also purchased a small battery pack that plugs into the Dell giving me extended life (4 AA's)($8 on Ebay). Hope this helps. Havin' a blast, Safe Caching, Dave, Akron, Ohio PS: As a premium member I use the Pocket Querie to download 100 caches at a time, makes the hunt for multiple caches in the same area very easy!
  4. Hi All: Made a few more finds today !! Cache Dragon is working fine except for the "twice as far" distance problem and not being able to save the database GPX files...(I just reload them each time I run the program). So... I'm sure David will have the fix soon... ....All for now, I'm off on a Harley-Davidson vacation and will return in a few weeks. I hope to add more finds during the trip! Safe Caching, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  5. Hey thanks Crash... .... so you havn't any problems downloading the state zip file and then writing to a disk? I have a zip reader on my Dell.... I wonder if I would have to extract on my PC and then sen it extracted to my Dell...or extract the zip right on the PDA??? you know.... I'm computer illiterate...cant spell either....anyway, I appreciate your help. Thanks, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  6. Hey Crash, Tnx for the info....It sounds like downloading as much geography as possible will do it.... but if the maps on CD will do the same, Hmmmm...just don't know which way to go. The CD is $109 or less depending on where you shop. ....And can you download a whole state at once from Mapopolis, or only by county? Anyway... if youi have a moment to comment on this,,,it's appreciated.. Safe Caching, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  7. Hi David and Fellow Cachers; I now have 1.09 running. The database is manageable as you need to reload for each use...OK for now.. But...has anyone else noticed the distances between your GPS position and the cache as approximately double what it should be. I set my coords as should be and the distances are still the same... roughly twice.. Any ideas, might have something to do with the saving of info that will be corrected with 1.091?? Anyway, ideas appreciated. Thanks and Safe Caching, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  8. Your commercial website, Would it be called: "GeoDavidcachingSteinDragondotcom" ? Just joking. I'll look for 1.091 and see if the database problem goes away. PS.... For all of your hard work..... I'll send you a pic of the Harley-Davidson 100th trip to Milwaukee where I intend to use CacheDragon to geocache. (I'll squeeze a few finds in on the trip)(H-D, Dell Axim, CacheDragon) Should be a nice photo!! Thanks, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  9. Hey Crash.... Thanks... your right, Mapopolis really runs great ! The demo sold me...$$$, its only money..lol I'm not sure if I understand their progrom tho... It looks like I can buy the maps on CD, which would be outstanding when I travel and an internet connection is not available. So.... I hope thats the case... If you know the CD will provide the same maps as the download...let me know....again...its only money $$$ (wait til my boss....errr...wife...see's this...) Thanks all, Dave,Akron, Ohio
  10. Well david and gang' Looks good! One tip, if you are already a Handango Registered member, then OK w/previous process to get 1.09. Me...not being a registered member, had to go to "Previous Orders" and enter the email address I used when I originally ordered 1.0, then I had to enter the order number, a 7 digit ID for your original purchase. The download was auto from there and really seems to work. I'll post more tomorrow after chasing a few caches.. THANKS DAVID STEIN... I appreciate your effort ! Dave, Akron, Ohio
  11. David, Sorry, just read your post for Beta on Sunday..... Hope all is well.... Thanks, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  12. Hi David and other fellow Cachers' Yes the "no power blues" were everywhere. Lucky me, I have the extra battery for the Dell and a power cord for the vehicle. David, we are leaving for the Harley-Davidson 100th B'day party in Milwaukee on Monday the 25th, any chance the 1.09 or other will be available by then? (Going to grab a couple caches by motorcycle where in Wis) Just wondering, haven't been around Geocaching.com much this week to see whats new. Thanks in advance, Dave Akron, Ohio
  13. Yes to the "fragile" status of the Axim, but I'm working on a case for it. Maybe a small tupperware type holder with a small amount of sponge tape or other padding. I'll let you know... Safe Caching, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  14. ....eerrrr....HHmmmm, my -a spelling, "enjoy". Have Fun...
  15. Hey Chevy... Any finds yet?? Bet your havin' a blast.. Safe Caching, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  16. Growley and others.... Great suggestion for the Dell site...went there and joined...lots of good info..Thank you Safe Caching, Dave, Akron, Ohio "caching with my Dell Axim X5, a Silva compass, CF slot GPS, and ...my feet...(hands are full)
  17. I have the Dell Axim X5 (400mhz) and a CF slot GPS. The CF GPS was purchased off of Ebay and works fine. I am using Delorme XmapHH for maps, but the app is V E R Y S L O W... So I have heard many good things about Mapopolois...I also use Navio for caching, a nice program you can import maps and then mark reference points, actually making your imported map, a moving map. I recently downloaded a topo and then marked the points works fine.... ....However, cachedragon will be available in a workable app soon..... See "DavidSteins" posts here. All you need.... a reliable compass and a PDA/GPS... Good luck and safe caching.. Dave, Akron, Ohio
  18. Regarding Snoogans mutterings of a "Load" in your pants.....what if you actually "Loaded" your pants.... .........Might work, people repellent....but, have to carry TP in my cache-n-go bag... Dave,Akron, ohio
  19. .......What about the pre-issue stock offering in the "DavidStein" software company??... You gonna let us all get onboard early??? Just joking...awaiting 1.1. Thanks.BTW....what was your test grade? Safe Caching, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  20. Hey Crash and others... I am using the Dell Axim X5 (400mhz) with a CF slot GPS....Delorme Xmap,Navio and CacheDragon software. What I really want to know is...does PC2003 for PDA run faster??? If so...how is Delorem XmapHH....I can tell you it is "grow old" slow on my Dell with PC2002... Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  21. Well...... its only money I guess.... Now it seems I may have to invest in a copy of Mapopolis.... Anyone suggest best/leasat expensive seller? thanks, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  22. Whew.........tuff crowd !!... ... I have a new cache for you guys. 1st, you need a properly clerked document, then a ride to the north of town, then an escort through the sally port, then.....well......you need an OJ suit, (Orange Jamies).... .......BTW, if you don't find the cache, you can stay anyway........I mean you can't leave.....but free food and water..... and lots of outdoor work!!!!..... B safe, Dave
  23. Yes.......Dell is goofy. 1st, if you are using the bottom connector, COM1 will read the data, 2nd, make sure your GPS program looks for COM1, then, ...before you actually attach the GPS unit, run your GPS program with no other apps running (such as ActiveSync), ...then tell the GPS program to activate the GPS or start, you should get an error message that no GPS was detected, ...then plug in the GPS, and try a re-connect or start, what ever the program calls connecting the GPS. My Dell Axim X5 won't run Delorme Xmap HH unless I follow this procedure. Very frustrating, but it works. By the way, the Delorme Xmap HH is V E R Y S L O W ! !. I have ordered and am waiting for PC2003, which is now being delayed until approximately 09/15/03, just heard from Dell this AM. Hope this helps. Safe Caching, Dave, Akron, Ohio
  24. Keep the faith....and ..... David, can I buy pre-issue stock offering in your software comnpany??? (just joking, unless you really do go public) Safe Caching, Dave, Akron, Ohio
