  1. Hi. I have the same setup including a 1 gig card made by Lexar for Wolf Camera. Same MapCreate and same H2OC. No problem. Is your problem just that the GPS does not recognize the card? Did you create a map on the card? Did you register the card with the map software? Did you use the LEI Card reader to write the map to the card? In other words there is a copy protection system to be followed. Can you load waypoints on the card and have the GPS load them? Have you tried the card in another device like a camera to make sure the card is not defective? Did you try to use the card that came with the software? I think mine was a 128 or 256. At the top of this forum is a FAQ. In that is a link to Airmapper Lowrance site. A wonderful collection of help and hints. I love my Lowrance. It is fast, accurate, easy to read and the maps are wonderful detail. I know I ask a lot of questions, but just trying to get a handle on your problem. It does take a little learing curve to understand the mapCreate program. Keep us posted.
  2. Look at Lowrance. I have an H2O Color, just over $300 US with maps. Great reception, accurate maps.
  3. I got a Treo 650 and use plucker instead of cachemate. Personal preference on plucker. I also graduated from a Palm IIIC. The Treo is much brighter and easier to read in the sunlight. The Treo hot syncs just like the Paln except USB instead of Serial. Get the Palm version of the Treo.
  4. Yes I do have a cable to attach to a computer as it came with the GPS...but it's a funny attachment. Instead of it being a USB attachment, it looks like a mini-printer attachment that has tiny screws on either side of the attachment. My laptop doesn't have such a port for that "mini-printer attachment". Even a friend of mine on here, when I show him via webcam, had him stumped. Said that he didn't know that it could come like that. He said most nowadays come with the USB type. But he said it was easily fixed by going to the local outfitters and buying one for around $20 which I think I will do. It is called a serial port. The $20 adapter will make the conversion. The trick about a serial port is they have numbers like com1, com2, com3, etc. You have to get all parties, the computer, the adapter, the GPS and the software that does the download to talk on the same number. Most software has an automatic detect feature to find all the players. I am glad you met up with some local cachers. Perhaps you can get a little more help from someone with your GPS connection. Once you do that it opens up a whole new world of putting 500 at a time in your GPS (with a premium membership). Happy caching
  5. Hi and Welcome I have the same GPS and have MapCreate 6.3 and can tell you the detail is very good over the base map. At the top of this forum is a FAQ and one section takes you to an entire web site for Lowrance. Very good information. Give it a try
  6. I found this event in New York click It might be too far away and not until September. Also you might e-mail geocachers in your area that have a lot of hides and/or finds to see if you can meet somewhere. In Texas it would be a BBQ Place over a bottle of beer. Do you have a cable to attach your GPS to your computer? Also try
  7. Welcome, don't get discouraged. I don't have the same type of GPS and therefore unable to give you step by step help, but if you search for event caches in your area, you can meet up with others who can show you. We have at least one event cache a month in the Dallas area, a breakfast, cook-out, meeting at a sporting event or some type of celebration. The last breakfast I attended had about 80 cachers there. Look in the local or state forum for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or maybe over in New York to see if any activity near you.
  8. I replaced my SportTrac Pro with Lowrance H2OC two months ago. With maps it was just over $300. Love it, bigger, color, easy to read (I am older than you) and fast updates when zoom in or out. Spend more if you want to, but I would buy Lowrance again. They now have out an updated map if I had waited a little, but vacation was not going to wait.
  9. The only card I have used in my H2O is "Ritz Big Print SD by Lexar" 1GB. No problems. It is my only registered card. I love my H2O Color. Maps right on in Texas, only State I have used it in. I have Map Send 6.3 not 7 if that helps.
  10. I have a new Lowrance too. Great maps, east to read. I have a lanyard I got at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Pretty unique and looks goo too.
  11. Get one that you can connect to YOUR computer. Some newer computers do not have a serial plug any more. Most of the older and cheaper Palms connect to serial port. Anything from a PalmIII on up will hold enough caches to get you several days of caching. I have also heard that the new Vista has trouble with connecting with Palm. Look at some of the hundreds of threads on the forum about paperless caching. I have not tried to deal with maps on my Palm, my GPS has excellent maps. (Lowrance H2OC) and before that a SporTrac Pro. Usually the Palm stays tucked away in a safe place and used to just read what you would read on the paper, clues, hints etc. then put away. It is not as rugged or waterproof as a GPS. Hope this helps. Look at some of the other discussions for more ideas.
  12. I export from GASK to Microsoft Streets and Trips file and import that file into S&T. You can look at the pushpins on the map. 254 counties in Texas is a lot. If we lived in Delaware it would be easier, just 3 counties. I don't think the county is in the GPX file. I know when you hide a cache, it does not require you to specify a county. Are you going after the Texas County Challenge? On edit. What micro to identify counties???? Next edit, I found it on GASK. Did not know it was there. I think I will give it a try. Will let you know if I figure it out. Thanks
  13. Hi and Welcome, At the top of the GPS units and software is a FAQ. One of the topics is on the Lowrance units, I have an ifinder H2O C and love it. Click here It has step by step instructions. Very good and easy to follow. You load your information on a CD Card and put it in the GPS then load the information into memory. Good hunting.

    Paperless

Yes, a Palm IIIe will work just fine, I have a IIIx.
  15. Also look to make sure your e-mail is not thinking it is spam. Look in your junk folder.
  16. I have had my Lowrance H20C for about a month. LOVE IT, over my SportTrac Pro. The maps are right on, even showed what side of the creek to be on. We went on a 1700 mile trip to Big Bend, found lots of caches along the way. No problems. At the top in the FAQ is a link to a Lowrance web site. Loads of great information there. Check it out. I have never had a Garmin.
  17. Almost any Palm will work. I have a IIIC (color) and a IIIx (monochrome). Both are ok to read, but my Treo 650 is brighter. I am older and wear trifocal glasses. That said, one consideration is connecting it to your computer. Most of the older ones use a serial connection, while others use a USB. It then depends on what connections your computer has. Some laptops do not have a serial port. There are adapters but that is additional cost to be factored in. Ebay and craig list and the Garage Sale Forum are good places to look for a good deal. If you drop a cheep one in the mud or water, you will cry less.
  18. I run Cachemate on my Treo 650. It is Palm Software. Some new Treo's are not Palm but Windows Software.

    PQ's

Make sure your e-mail provider is not marking the PQ as spam. Look in your spam folder.
  20. I have looked at it and held it in my hands. To me it is a little big and heavy. The geocacher I talked with loves it in spite of the fact it takes 4 batteries. She said it was great. I am not bashing, the only gps I have owned is a Sport Trac Pro. I am looking for a color upgrade and think I have decided on a Lowrance. Good luck on your decision.
  21. For the Hunt C you need a serial cable. They have them at Lowrance.com or this cable. cable You also need a 9 pin serial port on your laptop. Mine has one, some don't. If you don't then you need a USB to serial connector available at Radio Shack, e-bay and lots of other places. When we are going on a trip in the camper, I download Pocket Query's to GASK and export them to Streets and Trips as pushpins. As we drive along, we can see what is close. The laptop sits on the engine cover so the navigator can tell the driver where to go. Works Great. Edit. You must be a premium member to download Pocket Query's.
  22. A big question seems to be which palm to use. I have a Palm IIIx, two Palm IIIc's, A Treo 180g and a Treo 650. The last two are Palm based smart phones, but they still have palm software. I got them from several places including e-bay and did not pay more than $20.00 for any one of them. They all work with my laptops with windows 2000 and desktop with windows XP. They will all hold over a thousand caches. The newer ones hold a lot more. They all work with Cachemate or plucker. The part that is overlooked is the physical connection to your computer. My older Palms use a serial port while the newer ones use USB. Both my laptops have a serial connector, as well as USB so no problem for me. Some laptops do not have a serial port. There are converters to convert a USB to serial. But that is an added cost. Get a Palm that connects for you. The next question is color vs monochrome. You are not going to be carrying it and following it like your GPS. You are going to read about the cache, maybe the hint, then put it away until you find the cache. Then take it out again, make a note about your find, look for the next cache, read about it and the hint if you want, then put it away. You can usually get out of the bright sun long enough to read. You are going to put it away in a safe place because none are waterproof or as rugged as your GPS. They are a little fragile. So get a cheap one (e-bay, craig list, goodwill, friend) and give it a try. The goal is to save paper and ink. To answer the question why I have more than one. I have been getting them to give away as door prizes when we have a Geekfest here in Dallas.
  23. Hi Why do you think your Palm will not work. I have a Palm IIIx using 3.3 and cachemate works just fine also the spinner plucker works too. Do a little search in the FAQ for paperless. Also lots of threads on the forum about paperless and Palm. I don't know about nuvi660, but your Palm will be just fine.
  24. I have known Dark Star for over a year. I told him about this topic last night at a Dinner Event knowing about his tattoo that is geocaching related. I see this is his first post to the Forum. He is quite a talented young man. He designed the Logo for Geowoodstock 4. The Texas Longhorn with a bird on one horn.
