  1. I do not have a 2GB card to try in my H2OC. I know my 1GB card holds a lot of maps and waypoints.
  2. I have only 76 of the 254 Counties in Texas under my belt. There is a Texas County Challange that about five have completed. It takes about 14,000 miles to get it done. My top county is Dallas, with Tarrant next and a tie of Denton and Hood. It then drops off to only one or two for the remainder. I also take pictures of the County Courthouses too. Sometimes the only cache in a county is not at the county seat, so more driving. As a side note, there are two "Texas" counties not in Texas, one in Missouri and one in Oklahoma.
  3. There is a micro in GSAK Click that adds counties to user data 2. You can then sort and query on that field. Texas has 254 counties so it is very handy. It is a little bit of work to set up first time but I was able to do it. Start Here Good luck
  4. Mine stays closed, but I have not had it swimming yet to test. H2OC
  5. I have a Lowrance H2Oc for geocaching. It is great. Lowrance is one of the leaders in fishing electronics including GPS as well as fishfinders. Tale a look at lowrance.com. Some nice looking units there.
  6. Hi Have you let it set out in an open area for 1/2 hour or more to allow it to download the latest atlas and satellite information? I think given time it will learn the birds are not there. Does it find enough to give you a good fix on your position? From time to time old birds are retired and new ones come on line. I don't think that information is in the firmware. Just go geocaching and have fun.
  7. Hi and welcome There is also an online auction site called e-bay. Lots of people sell stuff including older palm devices for way less than you quoted. Even my old Palm IIIx holds lots of information. Two things to consider. 1. cheap so if you break it you will not cry as much. They are not rugged outdoor devices and 2. a palm that will connect to YOUR computer. Some older palms only connect by serial port that some of the newer computers do not have. Also check local Goodwill stores and such. It is known as Paperless Caching. Do a search and there are lots of discussions on the subject including step by step instructions. The main software used on the palm are cachemate and plucker. You can also use other devices like blackberry and smart phones and i phones. Happy caching.
  8. If it is registered, how come it does not have the little "R" in a circle like some of the other names on their site?
  9. We recently went on a one week road trip. It was plugged into the 12 volt up to 10 hours, no problem. Maybe check to see your truck plug is more than 12-13 volts. I have a volt meter and sometimes it runs as much as 14.5 volts as we are driving along. I don't remember it getting hot. If there is no warranty, a little ventilation would not hurt. That's what I would try. What have you got to loose? Good luck.
  10. When you get close, quit looking at your GPS and look for hiding places. It will get you 10 - 25 feet, add to that the tolerance of the hiders GPS you might be several feet away. Start looking for the regular size with easy difficulty. Some micros can be difficult. Like the movie, "use the force Luke. I too have a Lowrance GPS, it is very good, but never intended to get exact. Consumer grade GPS are just for close, not exact. Nothing wrong with your Ifinder. 1. Find a local cacher to go with. 2. Email and ask for more help or clues on some you were unable to find, 3. Go to an event and talk with others. Don't give up.
  11. From the Lowrance.com about Map Create 7 The newest Lowrance enhanced mapping software for all the U.S. and Hawaii…on a single DVD!...now bigger and better with the addition of over 3,000 inland U.S. lakes with depth contours, plus mapping coverage for the whole of Alaska! Also features topographic contour lines with elevations, enhanced shoreline detail for coastal and inland waters with nav aids, 2 million searchable Point-of-Interests, exclusive hunting databases (WMAs, WMUs GMUs, Public Lands, etc.) highways, roads, landmarks and more. MapCreate™ Series 7 Accessory Pack includes MapCreate™ Series 7 DVD, LEI MMC/SD card reader-writer, and a blank memory card! Hope this helps. I do not have v7 yet, just 6.3 but in about 5 years when I retire, Alaska is going to be one of our first trips. We have been to all the lower 48.
  12. I really like my ifinfer H2OC. It does not do auto routing, but has a large easy to read color screen. It holds 1000 waypoints and the optional maps are very detailed. It may be over your budget with maps. Each maker of the GPS receivers allows you to use only their maps. At the top of this forum is a FAQ and a link to a lowrance site maintained by a cacher. Lowrance is one of the largest maker of fish finders and boating electronics. They also have VERY detailed maps of many lakes, some are free and some you have to buy.
  13. I have never taken my Sportrac apart, but I think it is more than just a piece of glass. On the other hand, what have you got to loose? Take it apart again and look see. But, I think you are looking at a new GPS or a used one for parts. Good luck.
  14. At the top of this forum is a FAQ. One on the links takes you to a Lowrance specific site maintained by a fellow cacher. Very detailed instructions as to how to use your ifinder including downloading waypoints. There is free software to convert the waypoints to a Lowrance readable mode. Check it out, very good, very step by step. fratermus is correct, load to a card, put the card in the GPS. I have a H2OC and love it.
  15. I have a Sportrac Pro. Used it three years. Retired it last Spring for a Lowrance H2OC. Sportrak is good, I just wanted color. It is out of production, you will have to find a used one. Look for cracks in the case where it is screwed together. It is a serial connection to your computer and only holds 500 waypoints. My battery tray broke, so you have to be careful as you install new batteries. I never tried to get a replacement. Topical maps are good. Extra cost for maps. Will do turn by turn directions with more extra software and maps. Never used any of the other three on your list.
  16. Hi I have an ifinder H2O. At the top of this forum is a FAQ with a link to Airmappers Lowrance Site. There is some discussion about the GO and GO2 and maps and such. I am sure pulling one apart would void any warranty, but again if it is out of warranty, what is there to loose. I know it is a long ways from where you are to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and postage and customs would be a problem in sending it in. Good Luck
  17. Hi and Welcome to Forum. Steel City gave you great advice. You can download a simulated GPS that will run on your PC from the Lowrance.com site. I found it better to go outside and start using it. You did not say if you had Map Send Software for much more detailed maps. The base map is not very detailed. Airmappers Lowrance site is required to help understand your GPS. I have an H2OC and love it over the Sport Trac Pro I used for several years. You have a great GPS. Have Fun.
  18. I recently replaced my Sport Trac Pro (not Color) with a Lowrance H2OC. The Sport Trac has served me well and will be my backup. The price with software does not seem out of line, but in and auction that is the start, not the final price. Also note shipping cost. Some sellers really jack up the shiping in order to make more money. One more thing, the Sport Trac connects with a serial cable. Make sure your computer has a serial connector or you will be in for more expense for a serial to usb connector. I never have had to contact Magellan with a problem, but some have talked about the support from Magellan is less than perfect. I think on a unit out of production, you may not get much help from them. If I needed one for a 12 year old, I would consider it, but in your mind, set a max price and don't get caught up in a bidding war. Good Luck
  19. A lot is a Ford vs Chevy type of decision. Get your hands on some and kick the tires. Look at stores or attend a event cache. Everyone there will let you hold and operate their GPS. There are some I don't like the feel in my hand or due to my eyesight, what looks good. I used a SportTrac Pro for three years, then wanted color. I now have a Lowrance H2OC with a big screen. Easy to see, love it but it may not work for you and kids with smaller hands. Get one for sure that can connect to your computer or load waypoints from a card. You do not want to hand enter the information. Good Luck
  20. If you are going to use S&T, it has what you want built in. Export your waypoints from GAST to a S&T type file, import into S&T as pushpins. They show on the map. Hook your GPS to the laptop and under Tools, GPS Start Tracking, then click Arrange Map View. That will keep your current location centered on the map. Two points to observe. 1. Connect your GPS after the laptop boots up, otherwise the laptop will think your GPS is a Serial Mouse and 2. Make sure your GPS is set to NEMA output. We have used this system for several long trips in our camper. When we went to Canada (from Dallas) we had about 4,000 caches in GASK and loaded as pushpins on S&T. I do not have Mapsource software.
  21. Thanks, I understand your question now. I do not have an answer, never tried to do that. Good Luck.
  22. Max Speed ? I am not sure I understand the question. My SportTrac Pro displays whatever speed it is going from walking at 2 MPH to flying in an airplane at 500 MPH. Never been faster than the 500. I guess in a jet fighter at Mach 3 or 4 there might be a max speed it can calculate. Or you might get into E=mc2 or the speed of light thing. Way beyond my math.
  23. Hi I finally found the thread about SD cards in Lowrance units. My Lexar card works just fine. Lowrance discussion
  24. Hi and Welcome. You got a very good GPS there. I have a Lowrance H2OC. Love it after having a Sport Trac Pro for three years. There are not as many Lowrance users as other brands here on the forums, but we all can help . You got good advice, it will get you close. You need the detail street maps. I think the Map Create 7 is out now, I have the version 6.3. Very detailed maps, it even has all the little creeks and has gotten me to the right side of the creek every time. At the top of the Software Forum is a list of FAQ. One section is on Lowrance. Click Here Don't worry about the heat. It gets hot in Texas too plus humidity. Go early morning, late evening and there are night caches too.
  25. I too have never had a rash from PI. I have learned to recognize it as my son is very allergic. ( His Doctor even once made a house call to look at his rash). However I do not temp fate with excessive exposure.
